Sword Art Online - Second season? Pretty conclusive ending

Episode : 25 23. December 2012 16:34

Hello,

Today we'll talk about the 25th (last) episode of the summer season 2012 anime series Sword Art Online that concludes its run with a fairly conclusive story ending.

Yes, Asuna is finally free (even if she has to recover her mobility after 2+ years trapped in a virtual game) and pretty much everyone is happy.

The only one to suffer is the evil Nobuyuki, but it's not like anyone cared about him in the first place right?! Sword Art Online

The final battle in the real world between Kirito and Nobuyuki was pretty plain, especially when Kirito started blabbing stuff about the size/weight of the knife.

I suppose I should've expected a couple of cheesy lines from him, but my mind just wasn't ready to bear through this...

What? After being trapped for so many years and risking twice their own life they go back and play Aincrad's castle 100 floors yet again?

Who in their sane mind would start playing again this game after such an experience (especially considering the people who actually DIED in this game)?

I find it hard to watch, even using "suspension of disbelief". It's just...plain stupid! :|

Sword Art Online

On the positive side, we have a complete happy end where everyone (including the other 299 SAO players still trapped) managed to find a place in society.

By the way, was I the only one wondering why Lisbeth's hair color was completely different compared to the virtual reality?

I mean, I remember that Heathcliff changed everyone to look exactly like their real life counter-part right?

Sword Art Online

Concluding, Sword Art Online's anime adaptation is not a masterpiece, but it's a fairly enjoyable anime overall and a suggested one for whoever is searching for a "fantasy" adventure anime series.

Visual Points : 820/1000 (I didn't like the battle animation style, but pretty high quality for the rest of the scenes)

Audio Points : 880/1000 (I liked pretty much all the songs/musics used in the series)

Story Points : 805/1000 (Cheesy and badly explained, but with a good premise.)

Entertainment Points : 825/1000 (Fairly enjoyable)

Characters Points : 850/1000 (*takes Suguha home*)

Final Points : 8.3/10

The series is ranked 55th over 186 series in my rankings (Updated to 23/12/2012 16:00)

See you soon,

I suppose this is the best we SAO fans can expect

Lisbeth's haircolor is another thing that is explained in the LN but they apparently didn't find room for in the anime. While the face and body is the same as in real life, it's still possible to change haircolor and hairstyle.

*nods* I will have to read the novels sooner or later.

They really jumped through a lot of content in the anime adaptation don't they? I wonder if the series would've had a different rating with all the content present in the light novel...

Yeah, they tried to explain it with that "Sword Art Trivia" section of the "Sword Art Offline" specials but there's so much information that got left out that I doubt they'll get it all by the time the last DVD gets released

Yeah, well the quantity of content was too much and it would've required 34-35 episodes to properly flesh out judging from what people have been saying. Well, we still have hopes for a second season right?

Fear the backlog, the otaku killer!

Yep, which makes it all the more frustrating.

You're right, the ending might be pretty conclusive for the Aincrad and Fairy Dance arcs but I sometimes felt as if the Phantom Bullet arc was a different story. It wouldn't feel too weird if they were to make a second season and start it off either with the start of the third MMO incident or with Sinon's explosive introduction

OH COME ON!

More pictures of Asuna? yuck!

Leafa is the only character that is worth something in this crappy show.

She's both HOT and smart and I just love her.

I can't stand Asuna, I don't think she's attractive AT ALL. I just hate her so much. I also don't like Kirito.

Why can't leafa be the main character?

I'd love a second season, how long do these things usually take to confirm?  It's a pretty popular anime, so I don't know why they wouldn't milk it more.  Would love to see Sinon, I love Sugu too, but Sinon is just too damn hot.  Kinda reminds me of Yuki Nagato actually appearance-wise.

That stuff aside, I love fantasy animes, so this was fun to watch for me.

Why wouldn't you like Asuna ?
She's funny ,nice looking (yeah ,the producer exageratted so much...but who cares?) and seems to be very nice to me.
Also ,even tho i am a guy and usually don't care about that ,Kirito seems to be very nice also ... too bad he looks like cheating Asuna in some points !
I have no problems with Sugu ,but i like other girls in this anime more...like Silica...she's so cute ! ^_^
Still ,why would u hate Asuna ?
The thing i don't like to Sugu is that she don't understands she have no chance with Kirito and I would like actually to see her giving up so there will be no threats for Asuna in the future !
)

Anyway, I like this anime so much ,I am a gamer ,I am an anime lover and i like such anime genres found in SAO ... so I would be mad a while if there won't be a 2nd season ! HOPE DIES LAST ! (also ,I hope that the story will be continued ,to be 3rd arc and so ,not to be changed ,I mean , no secondary character from first season shall dissapear or so ,but all be there xD )
CAN'T WAIT ! XD

Asuna is the stereotypical "trophy girl" that is there just to give Kirito a reason to fight (to gain the trophy) and that's why most people hate her.

We need to wait quite a lot for a second season, but maybe in a year or two...

I don't see how she is nothing but a "trophy girl". While yes she gives Kirito a reason to fight that doesn't automatically mean we shouldn't like her! She's one of my favorite characters( right next to Leafa/Suguha((IM SORRY I FORGOT HOW HER NAME IS SPELLED*cries in shame*)). I like her not for her looks but for the depth the anime gives her. She is very prudish and doesn't have many relationships yet she falls for Kirito. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think Asuna is an amazing character.

Pink hair, Green hair, ect... doesn't exist in real world, yes Kayaba had changed everyone to look like their real appearence in real world but only face and body, hairs and some other stuff could be changed in game. SAO BD vol 1 has 10 min of extras explaining about things like that.

About the end, i really enjoyed it, and i don't see anything wrong with they going back to Aincrad, you are being to one sided on this, while yes some people will never want to go  back to a online game again, others certainly will, they lived there for 2 years, its like a second home.
Talking about home(and future spoilers), Asuna made Kirito play non stop with her because she wanted to be the first to get to floor 22 so she could get their old house in SAO back. She said she lived her most happy moments in SAO there with Kirito, it was a very important place for her.

I have to go through these extra it seems, but I'll probably wait for all the BD to be released in order to just watch all of them at once.

Well, but isn't it strange that ALL of them want to go back? Well, probably I'm too fixated on this stuff...strangely when it comes to SAO it's hard for me to accept these situations, far more compared to other series. >_<

Ahahah, that's definitely something she would do...

I think it's pretty obvious that former SAO players would want to take on Aincrad again. Despite the threat of death, it was where they lived for that time; it's an indelible part of them. It may not have been as clear in the anime as it was in the LN, but by the end, many players were content with their lives in that world. That's why Suguha felt so left out and isolated; she hadn't been there in that castle and felt that her lack of that common existence alienated her. But now, that place that was indeed important for them has returned and they have the opportunity to do what they couldn't before: finish the hundred floors and conquer the Scarlet Jade Castle.

A couple notes on Aincrad in ALO: To compensate for the addition of magic, missile weapons and flight, the difficulty level has been increased. Monsters are stronger. Also, Sword Skills have been incorporated into ALO with the added bonus of custom Sword Skills. It is, however, extremely difficult to create your own skill with Skills involving 5 or more hits being nearly the exclusive realm of top players like Kirito, Asuna, or Eugene.

feal87

Well, I sort of understand your point, but this adaptation did make no effort to explain us this feeling in the players. It was just random and felt unnatural. Probably I should read the novels to know more about the details explained in it...don't you think?

That's a nice feature, and I wonder if they'll ever show us what were the other floor bosses in Aincrad. There were still many floors to go...

Having read the books, I think I can sometimes take for granted info from the novels and not realize how unclear the anime was at times.

As for Aincrad,I'm hoping that the final confrontation in the books will be at the top floor with Heathcliff in one form or another.

I personally like the first 13 Episodes the most... there is so much detail and differences in the Floors they showed and they were looking unique and beatiful.

Now i dont want to get Insulting but:
"What? After being trapped for so many years and risking twice their own life they go back and play Aincrad's castle 100 floors yet again?

Who in their sane mind would start playing again this game after such an experience (especially considering the people who actually DIED in this game)?"

the Answer is simple... EVERYONE. Virtual Reality was made for Having fun and breaking the Limits of what a Human can do. If you are unable to Die and able to Log Out "Who in their sane mind would NOT start playing again?!" you can do what you want in your own world, actually PLAY the Game, Eat all kinds of Delicious food as long as you want, do some practical things like Practicing Balance and Sword Fighting or whatever you want there aren't any real boundaries of what you can do in your own Virtual Reality.

Im sorry but that part is what its all about and i wonder how someone could actually say something like that even after seeing and thinking about these things.

Yeah, the first episodes were better, but mainly because the enemy was a mysterious one compared to the pathetic Nobuyuki.

After such a traumatic event? I doubt most people (apart from a cadre of hardcore players) would risk their lifes on these "unsecure" (to general public) interfaces.
That's taking real world as an example of course, I know that fiction is...well fiction. ;)

Well, about returning to that world, I think I can relate their situatuon with soldiers that served in the front line. After those experiences (excitement and fear in battle, peaceful and idillic cities), living 2 years in the world, I doubt some of them can really adjust to the old normal life.

I gotta say that only the first 11-13 episodes were fun and enjoyable, i didn't really like how amazingly cheesy the aincrad arc was, and ALO didn't seem to be the same feeling of the first part as there was no more tension of dying in the game, just a bit plain, now don't get me wrong, i do like this show and i have read the novels, it's just that i guess i expected something else, also because the other characters i love (like Klein, Silica and Lizbeth) didn't have a single appearance in the whole rest of the series, only at the end, and just...

aah~ Forget it, i just gotta say it had it's up and downs... and that Suguha was the best character in the series!

I agree with you that the first episodes were better, and I think that the main reasons were :

As soon as Nobuyuki arrived...everything started to look really bleak...

I like first episodes (1-14) more ,I like Aincrad alot more than ALO ...
Why ? it's kinda simple
~The story is consistent ~ Things just get to build up and there is adventure ~ action ~ romance based > things that I like the most
Then ,in ALO ,I really hate that bastard, Nobuyuki, I hate when I see somebody without a hearth ,even in an anime...
Another thing is that I liked more the part with Kirito& Asuna than with Sugu...
Then ,as it was said ,Klein / Silica / Liz didn't even showed up in Alo ...
Also ,the story isn't so consistent anymore ~ it's all about Kirito trying to save Asuna and all happens until 5 days or so...While in first part there where 2 years that past over the time...

Mostly ,I watched so much the ALO part only to see what will happen with Asuna...i was dissapointed a little when i firstly found out that Sugu loves Kirito and it was kinda sad when Sugu found out that even in the game it was him... I would like to see her fallin' in love with another guy xD

Anyway , the anime was just so nice and ...I didn't sleep a night to see it all (well...after the story catches you ,you can't escape anymore...)
NEW SEASON , NEW SEASON(s) xD

Season #2, This egg was Kayaba's trap. Now everyone all across the world is under his control D:

However he hasn't lost his nobility and you are free if you clear the game.

Would love to see this sequel, but with a different hero this time, in a world where kirito and asuna decide to give up, and spend their life as a couple. Where suguha is fighting to win with a different male protagonist and trying to set everyone free.

A great romantic ending, really touching, too bad that I found the Game talk in the second half really annoying and unnecessary. Well I think that mmo's are a waste of time anyway XD You're right when you say that directly starting to play again is unbelieveable like hell. And why is Kirito double dating again. I curse him for playing with Suguha's heart again.

Smaller details in Sword Art Online annoyed me quite a bit, like silly villains and other plot devices, but overall it's a nearly great anime. It had an interesting setting,a cool main character, great visuals and music as well.

Hmm...2nd arc was admittedly quite bad. Sure, having a race against time did give a good suspense feel (not so much in anime) but that's all.

I'm not sure wether you'll like 3rd and 4th arc as it went astray FURTHER from the whole SAO feel. 3rd arc story was quite boring, lest you have a thing for kuudere and would like to see Kirito crapping in his pants. 4th arc revolves around Asuna (which i believe will be a major turn-off to her haters) and her typical ojou problems.

5th and latest one, possibly better than SAO arc but that's halfway done. Not to mention 3rd and 4th will very likely eats every eps in 2nd season. (hell, i'm not sure wether 4th arc could take place at all. Given how lengthy they were)

Ahahah, you were probably expecting a bit too much from this series. They've never gone into brutal scenes and I was sure they wouldn't have done now...

Coming from someone who only watched the anime after being talked into it and not reading the novels/manga, I absolutely LOVED the series. (I suppose it's because I don't watch a lot of anime). I do wish that the Aincrad arc was much longer though. If they wanted to, they technically could've had atleast 100 episodes for each floor (I would've watched it). I loved Asuna as a character SO much in the first season because she was such an amazing character. Even though I wish I knew more about the back story between her and Kirito (I read the suicidal part from a previous post of yours about the first two episodes), I aboslutely loved her character. She was powerful, headstrong and showed emotion. As for Suguha... no offence, but I absolutely despised her. She seemed so weak in comparison to Asuna and after the beautiful romance that was expanded on in arc 1, I could'nt even think about her liking Kirito. If she was much stronger or fought more I would've liked her as a character, but she seemed too conflicted and blinded by her feelings which just annoyed me. However, she was still amazing and had an interesting character development. I was just annoyed that Klein or the other characters didn't show up at all in the ALO arc. I was somewhat bored at the Kirito x Suguha journey and I didn't like Asuna being so helpless but that's just how the story went, haha. I'm still confused as to why they're going back to Aincrad... and how the story will unfold there. All I hope for is Klein, Kirito, Asuna and Yui to be there and I'll be fine. Maybe Leafa too... if she fights more. (I wish her spar with Kirito was more drawn out and epic..). Overall I rate this anime a 5/5, but on your scale of ?/20.. probably an 18 or 19/20. I enjoy reading your reviews though!

That's what taste is for, it's nice to see that there are people who enjoyed this series far more than me.

I was probably too blinded by the overhype that light novel people made in the early days and was unable to like it as much as others.

Using my scale this series would be a 16/20, it's a fair vote considering that I really didn't like ALO, the second story arc.

wow.... EXACTLY my feeling about this anime also
Asuna was nice while Sugu was annoying a little only because of her feelings ...after the romance in arc 1...yeah ,that's why i didn't liked her that much...
for the first arc i would give 20/20 ,and second arc an 16/20 (so overall 18/20)
I would really wish to see Asuna being closer to Kirito in the ending...

Well it's a pretty average anime, though still enough to give hype to people. Plot wise, Kirito's armor is too thick lol.

I am actually looking forward to a next season, if there would be. *looks at the sales*

Probably there will be, the sales are massively high so there are high chances...

Average anime was extremely average. The story really ended for me when the threat of death was taken out and even before then it had already been falling off a cliff with so few fight scenes and too much romance. I am surprised it even ranked 55th overall for you feal, I think you're being way generous in your score.

Like you, I found it totally incomprehensible that they would go back to Aincrad after that horribly traumatic experience (or any VMMO at that) and even more so that Kirito would accept and THANK a MASS MURDERING LUNATIC LIKE KAYABA!! Christ did everyone seem to forget the fact the man MURDERED FOUR THOUSAND INNOCENTS FOR NO REASON? That's worse than the 9/11 attacks! If I were Kirito I would've burned whatever form of Kayaba that appeared in front of me and surely would've destroyed anything he tried to give me.

Suguha was really the only saving grace for all this. Her, Silica and Lizbeth were the only people I found exciting throughout this entire show and sadly they hardly got any screen time. I am hoping against hope season two never sees the light of day. I couldn't possibly sit through another cheesefest like this again.

Same thoughts here, ALO was just less interesting considering that no one was really risking their lives in it. It's just yet-another-MMO...

*cries*...finally someone who understand my position and understand how contradictory was their decision...*cries*

Yes, Suguha and Liz are my favourite characters as well with Silica a bit behind, but unfortunately they were side-characters so they never really got the spotlight.

Suguha was way cute and had HUGE boobs!
That's a definite plus but as far as personality I think Silica was the best. She seemed the most laid back of the three and just seemed overall cuter or maybe it's just the loli factor... *ahem* but damn she was cute...

I'm surprised they even made Klein a side character after going through all the trouble of introducing him in the first ep. It's like why even introduce him if he's only going to pop in like 3 eps total and only for a few seconds? He had a cool personality and I wish he had more time in.

First of all...
Who the hell gives any @$!~ about the dead people ? me not ,really ,they were warned that if they die ingame they die irl also ,they were stupid... (have you saw the beta tester that lead the first boss raid on the 1st floor ? my gosh! or the guy leading the army in 74th floor that suicided and killed 2 other because he was stupid...who the hell cares about them ?)
Secondly...Kayaba seemed to be actually very nice to me...why ? his personality wasn't bad in my opinion (c'mon ,what he did bad ? ok , 4 thousand people died...so ? as i said , who the hell cares...what else he did bad ? in real life ,even if i would know i would get catched in a MMORPG without the posibility to get back irl without finishing the game and with the risk that if I die ingame I would die irl also , I would still play it...even if I would KNOW that BEFORE ! ... so ,as I was saying ,kayaba was just nice one...especially after sugoh showed...on the start i made an comparrison between kayaba and sugoh...I think the winner is obvious...by far distance..)
Now ,tell me ,how was suguha doing the show in this anime ? I don't have any problem with her but i found her a little annoying because she get between Kirito and Asuna...

Truth to be said, a guy like Kayaba would be a mass murderer in any civil country and probably get sentenced to death within few days.
Not to make your point less valid, but his actions were a lot more problematic compared to Sugou...

Just finished all 25 episodes, I enjoyed this anime very much.  I was confused at the end of the last episode.  Where was Asuna? Was she the character with the blue hair holding hands with Leafa?

Just watched the 25 episodes first Arc was fantastic. I suffered through the second. As far as the return to the game is everyone forgetting Asuna and Kirito have a daughter there? I mean they kinda have to go back to some VR environment to be with her. For some people it is really irritating to not complete a game as well, so to me at least that part made some amount of sense.

I think we forget the hard core gamers, I would log back in and play, I'm not big into the PKing but for me it's about more. I think I would play just to know, I think the hype behind it makes me want to play it more..

season 1 sounded a lot like FFXI lol I totally played that,
season 2 sounded a lot like perfect world esp the wings

I love this and how it reflects the games as they are and change.

who knows what technology can bring us ?
if we think a little ,something like VRMMORPG isn't impossible in real world to be made... I mean ,it would be like ~ something like nervegear to get your brain's information so you can play the game and something to connect all the information to the internet so you can play online...of course ,it sounds easier when said that way ,and actually is a lot harder ,but ,just as I said , it isn't impossible...maybe we will live to see something like that....I would play even if there would be chances to die ! xD

Hello I was wondering who the artist is of the first picture above of the SAO AOL arc with all the characters in it. It is very vital and important that I know who this artist is if it is a fan art artist or a company production.
