Code Geass Akito the Exiled - Lelouch clone detected!

Hello,

Today we'll talk about the first episode of the OVA anime series "Code Geass : Akito the Exiled" that after many years of wait gives us another story set in the war-torn world where Lelouch and the others lived into.

This spin-off is set in E.U. (European Union) during the time between the first and the second season. Unfortunately, this leaves almost no chance for Lelouch to get a small role in this series...

Of course, the main characters are different, but the series retains, since the very few minutes, that "Code Geass" feeling that made the first series a masterpiece.

After watching this first episode, I expect the story to be focused on Akito's past more than the E.U./Britannia war. He is strictly linked with the Geass world, but we don't know in what way.

By the way, am I the only one worried about Reila's well-being? Code Geass killed off many important characters in the past and I feel that nobody is safe in any production related with this series...

Just as I said in the title, it seems that this whole series is a reversal for the original Code Geass series concept. In the first series we had Lelouch (wits) opposing Suzaku (brute force), while here it seems that the situation is completely reversed.

After all, we have our Lelouch clone in this series (Xin Hyuga Xian) using a type of command geass extremely resembling the one owned by Lelouch (we don't know the details of the power limitations though).

Akito is instead the perfect copy of Suzaku, and I speculate that the power he's using is actually a geass command received by someone else. It would be ironic if it was a "live!" order...

The preview for the next episode shows us that both C.C. and Suzaku will make an appearance in the following episode. I wonder if they'll be allies or enemies for Akito and Reila...

We can also see Reila wearing a knightmare frame suit and I wonder if she'll fight alongside Akito during the following dangerous battles.

It would be quite anticlimatic for a commander to enter the fray and risk their precious life. It just isn't their role in the first place!

Concluding, Code Geass : Akito the Exiled looks to be an extremely promising anime series that I'll continue to watch and maybe cover in the future as well.

Akito is almost certainly going to die, just as the random new recruits. Akito's desire is to die after all, why don't we give him eternal rest?

I'm worried about Reira, but I wonder if she'll really die or not...I mean someone need to survive to tell the story right?

He ended up working for the rest of his life...sounds like a fitting suffering for that hateful character Suzaku was. Not sure if Akito will get that annoying, but I surely hope not...I mean did you remember Suzaku?

Of course she will, I expect her to be out of the military by the end of the series...in one way or another...

What if Spinzaku start spinning with his sword and defeat all Akito's enemies leaving both alive?

What? Maybe I'm actually odd but I actually like Suzuku. I also like how he always goes head to head with Lelouch a lot of times. He may be all physical but he's also surprisingly have a very good head which allows him to almost figure out all of Lelouch's plans. And... of course... the Spinzaku kick.

While I agree about the "clone" thing I don't really mind. Suzaku made quite the name for himself fighting in the time between season 1 and 2 so I like the fact that Akito might have the ability to go toe-to-toe with him. (Or win, I hate Suzaku.)

Agreed, it would be nice to see a battle between Akito and Suzaku, but somehow I doubt that'll happen. This is Akito's story and Suzaku's presence would overshadow him...

I don't quite like the idea of 3D animated battles, but I can survive with it I suppose. Hand-drawn battles are far better...

I'm on the fence with the 3D really. For one thing I really liked the 3D animation for Berserker in Fate/Zero. It made it feel like he was.... I dunno, twisted? Different? Abnormal? In any case I thought it really worked with the black fog. It's the same here really, I really liked the looks of the first fight.

I'm a bit of a traditional guy and apart from some scene, I didn't like the 3D in Fate Zero either. Especially the gigantic tentacle Caster stuff...

Xin's geass is looking to be way more capable than what Lelouch had. For one, it doesn't rely on verbal command I think.

Akito is way overpowered with that (I'm assuming) "live!" or "don't die!" geass command he has going on. Another spin-zaku in the making?

Yeah, he looks completely like spin-zaku, but with a darker agenda. Spinzaku was idealistic and childish, Akito looks plain EVIL!

Well that was fun, this side of the story had always been one that I was interested in, the EU were the only effective power preventing Britannia from world domination and aside from Suzaku blitzing through a single unit we never even saw it. All I can really note is that the understanding of European history was pretty poor (Napoleon being executed when he had been recalled to keep shit together in France for one), and that conveying how oppressed the Japanese were was a little overdone. With the likes of Ryou, Ayano, and Yukiya introduced however, hopefully they'll lay back on it in the next episode.

As for Akito I'd also say it's pretty obvious that it was Xin who Geass'd him, his flashback really says it all. As a character though, I think he's perhaps a little too sadist. I also think that Leila could be our Geass user/Lelouch-figure as well, even if CC appears in the next episode it has to be a flashback since she's too busy undercover with Kallen. Furthermore a preview image depicts a young Leila meeting with a hooded figure in a snowy forest, so there's potentially a lot more to her character. In terms of her wellbeing though I'm with you, it really says a lot that I can only see this ending with Suzaku steamrolling them all.

Also the CG animation works surprisingly well for Knightmare battles, Sunrise really seems to know what they're doing after Tiger & Bunny.

Well, it's some sort of recurring plot device to show "the sufference of the oppressed japanese people" and I was expecting it to be shown here as well...

Not sure, but I believe that as well. He is the only other guy who could possibly geass Akito that we know about...but I wonder what exactly is the power he's using. It doesn't completely look like an "order" based command.

I'm not exactly a fan of CG animations (prefer the old 2d drawn battles), but I have to agree that they were high quality.

If it were set in Japan like R1 and R2 were I would agree with you, but the OVA is set on the opposite side of the world in the middle of a different, almost endless, conflict. Just showing Ryou's group would have been enough to get the point across, shoehorning the refugees and general disdain took it too far. Most of all though the setting is entirely new, and more time should have been spent detailing it.

That vagueness has me kind of confused as well, I suppose Xin's Geass could just make people suicide (explaining the scene in the church) but it doesn't explain the opposite extreme. The same goes for Akito as well though, it's quite easy to assume that he's like Suzaku after seeing him tear stuff up in his Alexander, but can we honestly say that for certain? It's going to be a tough wait for the next episode which we likely won't see until mid 2013.

Hand drawn is always best but CG can work too when it's not obtrusive, and you have to admit that those dynamic camera angles would have been near impossible to animate hand drawn. The music probably helped as well.

Possible, but I don't think it'll be that easy as the Geass power must have some kind of influence over Akito as well. Akito, however seems to be affected by something more akin to the "live!" command of Suzaku...

Yeah, it's going to be a very long wait...

Buuhhhh everybody is mean to the japanese people, don't they remember that they brought nice anime to us. I would adopt some japanese girls and protect them. Oh and nuking England off the worldmap AHAHAHAHAHA!

Sunrise really knows how to spend their budget on jawdrop animations, as Reila was shown at first I though oh wow how detailed. The whole scenery looked awesome.

Agreed, Sunrise is doing a marvelous job on the animation even if I don't really like 3D animations.

Not sure, but maybe this allows us to see Spinzaku and C.C. back in action. Even if I'm not totally sure about C.C. because at this time she should be busy trying to save Lelouch...

I wouldnt consider anyone safe....but in the meantime we will get some good action and maybe even some sideways romance just like in Season 1 and 2, i consider this Season 2.5 ...a consolation prize to the huge fan base and maybe a feeler and a test to see if they might do a third season..i think they will watch sales figures closely with that in mind. The continuity of the art and the story is well done. That alone is impressive showing how much control and command of the art good anime directors and art directors have. Glad you covered this.

Yeah, this is more of a season 1.5 to be honest, being set right in the middle of the true story.
