Hyouka - Being Mayaka is suffering! Damn that Satoshi!

by feal8710. September 2012 23:19

Hello,

Today we'll talk about the 21th episode of the spring season 2012 anime series Hyouka that dedicates an entire episode to the complex relationship between Satoshi and Mayaka.

I was quite irritated by Satoshi's confession to Houtarou in this episode because, in the end, he is just playing around with Mayaka's pure feelings.

He is a self-centered child who doesn't care about how his actions will affect the surrounding people (like Eru's trauma in this episode).

Hyouka

Putting Satoshi aside, I liked how Houtarou is slowly growing accustomed to manage Eru's personality and impulses. I think that he's the best guy to control such an emotional girl.

I can see them slowly, but surely growing up to be a couple in a way that looks realistic to my eyes. Being "mostly" realistic is, after all, one of the charms of this series.

Yes, being Mayaka is suffering and I really can't understand how she manages to continue and love that hateful guy. He doesn't deserve her great personality and beauty.

I wonder what was the content of the call made by Satoshi in the middle of the night at the very end of the episode.

While I'm sure that the recipient was Mayaka, I'm unsure if his call was a "thanks for the chocolate" or a "I accept your feelings". I would prefer the second, but somehow I'm more leaning on the first...

Hyouka

Next episode seems to be a Houtarou centric one (we don't even see Eru in any of the preview shots), following his adventures around the country-side on a bike.

I'm not sure who is the one ordering him to do these errands (his sister or Eru?), but I really wonder how they managed to convince him.

I mean, it's Houtarou we're talking about! Even if he improved a bit, he is still the same guy who tries to avoid useless work as much as possible...

Hyouka

Concluding, this was another entertaining episode for Hyouka and I hope they'll manage to give a great ending to this series.

See you soon,

I found this to be a fine episode, very much in the best spirit of this series, and a masterful piece of work. Yes Satoshi turned out to the big jerk i knew he was from the start, i knew a guy like him in High School who manipulated everyone and had every excuse in the book to avoid feeling his own feelings, poor M i agree. At least Houtarou and Eru KNOW they like each other and are just taking their time. well we have one more episode to see what happens but this was a good one. I am going to hope that Satoshi said yes but like you i think he probably chickened out for that is his role i think in this series, they took a lot of the tradiional roles and gave them a twist...

but i am hoping even more now for a second season for they do some very suprising things who would have thought of such a twist on the Chocolates idea? i mean it is one of the favorite themes of all times in Anime but who would have thought of this way to turn it?

Eru remains lovely and i also loved the winter weather.

Satoshi need to suffer somehow, he isn't worthy Mayaka's pure feelings! He simply isn't...

Second season would be great, but we need to see what are Kyoto Animation's plans because they often leave aside great stories for years without any new content, you know FMA situation right?

Same here! *_*

For some reason, I thought this was supposed to end after 21 episodes. Where'd this mysterious episode 22 come from :p Kind of makes me wonder if it is the last actually.

Otherwise, the episode was pretty interesting. I can see where Satoshi's coming from, but yeah, he's kind of being a jerk

I had the same info Justin, but it seems that the english Wikipedia is, as always, completely bogus. Japanese Wikipedia reported 22 episodes, but I wonder if that's right...

He's completely a jerk! I felt the urge to punch the monitor...

Satoshi serves his purpose to unsettle the way this series might have become just another happy romance with two couples...he makes poor M suffer which i am not happy about she is such a nice girl, and he treats her like trash, i could not believe him rejecting the chocolates when they were in middle school, she should have pushed him off a bridge...

there will be at least 23 eps with the OVA and i suspect they may plan to do another OVA or special episode with the BD release to make it an even 24 but that is just a guess.

Not certain, but I sure hope so!

I actually think Satoshi not accepting the chocolates twice is right, because hers are honmei choco, but his way of going at it blows. But in a way, Mataka is also putting a lot of pressure onto him, its like he cant jusr flat out rejecting her since he wants her too, but cant accept it either since hes not ready to commit. I just hope this call means hes at least ready to be honest to her, she deserves that much. This way, if she devides to wait for him again , its an informed decision.

I love how Eru goes out of her way to explain why he isnt giving him choco, yet Oreki is a bit "dense" when ut comes to this apparently. Since the LN doesnt have a clear cut relationship for them, we'll just have to settle with them having a growing relationship.

Waiting a bit is a good thing, but letting a poor girl wait for two+ years (since middle school from what they say) for an answer is pretty evil. Just decide already and stop being self-centered!

yeah, I suppose that's all we can hope, but maybe someday...

Slightly random comment, but...

Mayaka is such a great girl, and my favorite of the series. Lovely it would be if she was at least my friend, especially my girlfriend! And Satoshi really needs a bashin' in the head....or else I'll be the one to kick him off the cast and replace him with myself!

Melting and reshaping adds the most important ingredient, love. I still like Chitanda more, but Fukube is a fool for not accepting Mayaka's chocolate.

I'm sure Houtarou is glad he didn't get any chocolate. White day would have been troublesome if he did

Few things:
1) Houtarou protecting a bro. That's real class there.
2) Nice to see Satoshi actually likes Mayaka and doesn't swing the other way. He's just afraid of commitment that's all.
3) Chitanda is not as clued in to things as I though.
4) Houtarou seems to be changing. No longer is he *only* thinking of himself.

1) True point and I like his attitude
2) I don't care about that prick. He is making everyone suffer with his approach...

3) Yeah, but that's part of the charm imho...
4) That's the whole point of the series I think. His sister wanted him to change and that's why he asked to join that club...

I am trying to think back to another series of this quality that uses just four main characters....can anyone think of another? i cant at the moment, which makes this quite an interesting challenge for the story writers.... i mean it could have faded at any point into mediocrity and been just another filler series but instead it has a snap and a crackle and an electricity..and even an element of danger...i was wondering about that dangerous setting of the bridge in the dark....  could have taken just a quick push and the evil that is Satoshi would have ended forever.... but then Mayaka would have been mad.... i wonder if we will ever learn what Satoshi's call was about.

It's kind of mean to leave a girl hanging although, Mayaka is probably pushing for the relationship a bit too aggressively without any thought.  Still, smashing the chocolate in half just because one isn't ready is just mean for the fact that the girls put so much effort into using actual cocoa.

I think Satoshi is more than just taking his time, he is using Mayaka for his own weird games, it is not just cold feet he actually likes causing pain i am pretty sure and that is why he is a kind of unusual "best friend" but then Houtarou is kind of a differnt kind of guy too. Everyone in the series is a bit different, Mayaka is a manga otaku, we saw that from visiting her room, so everyone has their strange side..... but that is partly what makes this so realistic and so fun. Even Older Sister is a nut case just how much of one we may never know but i still suspect her in the disapperance of Eru's uncle in some way.
So plenty of mysteries to be solved still in daily life here, and i think that is part of the message of the series, instead of resorting to actual magic or bizare powers or aliens like some similar school series do, this one revels in the ordinary being far form ordinary but still very real..and quite beautiful. More wonderful art and animation in this one.

As for smart phones, i think we are doing just fine with this wonderful interface, i am not a supporter of cell phones at all, and never use them, they are far too much used in our culture

Well, Mayaka is not really a manga Otaku or anything really. The quantity of books in Mayaka's room isn't anything that "massive" to be considered so tbh!

Yeah, I wonder if they'll ever show her face...

Cellphones are useful, that's why they're used. I can't believe how we managed to survive without in the past...

Otaku in Japan is not a bad thing, it just means she loves them, and yes she had an impressive collection considering the cost and the average allowance of school students in Japan, i didnt mean that in any way negative, i really have come to like Mayaka a lot as a character and I do hope she get a fair deal from Satoshi, we will hope for lots of good things next week. Cellphones are a plague and texting much worse in the USA.... the problem with such instant communication is two fold, it is too fast and it trivializes communication between people...to really communicate we need face to face whole body all senses contact....and digital devices prevent that, and also it is too fast, we dont have time for any sort of reasonable response with nuance and context, it is a big subject far too big for this venue but like video games there are demons in the closet
but none of that detracts from Hyouka being a wonderful series with lots of fun and good an one more wonderful chance to see some magic happen..maybe even some miracles.

Not really AdamEve, that quantity is incredibly normal and not anything big at all compared to normal high school standards. Please remember that a manga volume in japan costs 410/500 yen (I import regularly from Japan so I know well about this stuff) that is REALLY almost nothing even for a normal high school student allowance/part time job.

If we all had your mentality, we would be still hacking each other with axes!
Remember that internet is just like a cellphone as it allows long distance communication with other people. It is not the device that trivialize the discussion, but the guy using it. ;)

Hyouka has been completed.
Daily life of Japanese 16 years old high-school student was drawn carefully and wonderfully, I think.
(But their conversation was no realistic.^^; no provincialism, and stiff? formalities? I don't know how do I say...Of course I know it's trivial thing.)
It was drawn about almost original episode, season 2 is difficult, I think.
But when it was made into a movie by new episode, I'm so glad.
From Japanese wikipedia, This original book series scheduled to continue until Houtarou graduated from high school.
Original author is slow pen, I don't know how long does he take to complete.^^;;;

Jinrui wa Suitaishimashita was also good. This quarter is a harvest, I think.
