Hyouka - Houtarou is unbeatable! Mystery solved and arc completed!

Hello,

Today we'll talk about the 17th episode of the spring season 2012 anime series named Hyouka that completes the school festival arc and give us a reasonable, but somewhat "complex" solution to the mystery.

Just as Satoshi pointed out, is it even possible for a normal human to detect all the stuff that Houtarou managed to discover without any kind of real help from other people?!

I agree that they want to make Houtarou appear "special" in the eyes of the viewer, but he's downright creepy at the moment. Too unnatural to be considered a human in the first place...

This episode also showed us a different side of the cold empress Irisu, because she actually worried about someone else and ended up giving some proper caring suggestions to Eru.

By the way, the scene between Mayaka and Satoshi was extremely cute (especially Mayaka gripping on Satoshi's uniform), and I wonder if that will be the first step in their relationship?

It's sort of a shame that they look so near, yet so distant with their hearts. Sometimes I wonder if Satoshi loves Houtarou more than Mayaka...:|

I think Mayaka's reasoning is "logically" wrong, because a manga's quality is something completely subjective. Everything depend on who is the reader and what are his tastes.

However, I do understand her sentimental reaction to this situation, because a lot of times I felt the same way while reading manga or watching anime.

It's that feeling that makes you think "this series is PERFECT! Everyone must love it!", even while knowing that not everyone will agree with you.

Judging from the small episode preview segment, we can speculate that everything will be back to normal inside the club with Mayaka smiling again and Satoshi tracing back to his Database position.

I'm unsure about what will be the focus of the following episodes, but I think they'll strategically place multiple simple stories as a "time filler" before reaching the final story arc.

Let's just hope these stories will be interesting and will maybe show some character development for Houtarou and Eru as well, because they were quite "stale" in this last story arc....

Concluding, this 17th episode of Hyouka was an entertaining one and I'll continue to watch and blog about this series in the future as well.

Being Satoshi is suffering, but somehow I feel he's just a bit egocentric. He has Mayaka around him, and well isn't that enough to feel satisfied of your life?

H is human ..just very smart and intuitive which is the pillar of the entire series...basically another LaLouche but in normal highschool and Eru's role is to remind him of his humanity thru love, as Shirley tried to...i hope Eru escapes that fate, tho Satoshi also has a double in Code Geass..both of them nuts IMHO... i enjoy Satoshi as a foil for Houtarou but could care less about him and the possible second romance, he has been cold to M from the start, and i dont think he really has the capacity to love..

but I ma pretty sure that Houtarou does...we will see

which leaves Irisu out in the cold...but she was there from the start...unless she and Elder Sister get together, as the two main scheming females in this story.

Well, this series is a positive one, no one would ever think of some death to happen in here I think...

We'll probably have have no suffering at all in here. Just a bit of light drama like what happened to Mayaka in this arc.

Irisu is supposedly just a side character so that it's...well reasonable I suppose?

Are you sure everyone will agree on the subjective part? I heard a lot of times in the past in forums/MAL "X is too good to be true. It's the best series of all time and everyone agrees".

I contemplate watching this show but i just got so bored around episode 7 or 8ish, i mean it just seemed like the main character had no type of weakness and that there was no real need to keep reinforcing the fact that his intuition is over 9000, also with the small romance teases, i would be able to commit if there were more of a romance focus where his intuition would fail him and he would have to take a more "human" or humiliating route to acheive his goals. Atleast thats what i felt, It was really cliche on the mystery end and wasnt really committed to a romance direction though its prob not one to begin with but shes just too cute for it not to be!

Yeah, this series is just strange. Sometimes it feels off like a slice of life you know? No real direction or plot development...

Well, what you just explained (him failing) did happen once, but it wasn't romantic emotions to cause that situation. Well, I'll stop here not to spoil you!

Ahahah, that's my hope as well, but I still prefer Mayaka over Eru! What was your favorite after 7-8 episodes?

I have watched animes with no direction but they usually then to be alot more echhi<3 or comedy, where as this one seems too serious to not have plot lol.

Mayaka is sweet too, i am glad she got more "screen" time in this cycle and we could see her serious side and her deep interest in Manga... that was really fun and widened the horizons of the series a lot. They have done well by the female characters we have quite a spread of them ..and they are all interesting and fun.

Agreed, apart from personal tastes, all the girls got a nice characterization and personality. Hopefully they'll clear out a bit of doubts we have on Eru's inner personality in the future episodes...

wow, that was a very complex episode...at least three story threads all woven together... well done, i was not sure how they might keep the series going but i can see that it is not about just linear plot construction but a weaving of several threads, or many, as often happens in real life. well done.

I am going to have to watch this one several times over, there were things happening, esp around the manga and the manga club that i need to study.

Manga turns out to be far more significant for Japanese culture currently than i had suspected. and doing Manga has a high status....and this episode reveals a lot about that.

very interesting..i wonder if we will see the dinner party next week or a trip to a mountain resort? either will be great.

Yeah, they managed to merge all sub-stories in a very good way. I hope they'll create a good ending for the whole series too.

Not sure about the effects on the general populace to be honest. never really investigated on the opinions of normal people over manga...

I think Hyouka is only supposed to be 21 episodes, so really just a 4-episode arc to end from here.

I'm still shipping Eru and Houtarou, especially with that OP... as he looks deeply into her eyes... hands out heading for her chest... Seriously, tho, I think it would be cool if they got together as a couple, cause we all know they like each other.

Anyway, a great wrap up to this story, and Satoshi got completely schooled on how to figure out mysteries, much to his disappointment. It sucks to have that friend or acquaintance that is so good at what you want to be able to do, a common theme throughout this story arc with Mayaka, Eru, and Satoshi (and Tanabe).

Oh, I thought Hyouka was 22 episode, but it seems I was wrong. That means we're pretty near to finish...

Not sure, Somewhat I doubt we'll see any kind of romance from Hyouka...

Well, everyone has charms and good points. He just need to focus on these instead of trying to face Houtarou in his own domain.

ya close to this ending but....

with the huge popularity of this series i would not say impossible to a sequel..it is a large following in Japan.... in the end this series may be a unusual one, almost unique..and that maybe what they intended from the start...never really giving away what it is up to or about...and tho we may not see a wedding...i do think we may see something between Houtarou and Eru..again based on what the OVA showed.

This series was quite popular (around 9K copies sold per volumes), but isn't exactly "huge" compared to other more popular series (Horizon sold 18K+ copies per volume for example). Second season? Not sure...it'll depend on how they conclude this first one...

I wasnt talking just about copies sold, when i said huge in Japan i was referring to the chat and discussion among fans and clubs and people who follow anime over there, and it seems to be quite popular with a wide range of groups..it is not always easy to predict sequels and who will do what, it can happen on a whim or sometimes there are long standing agreements and exchanges of favours between companies, so we will see. This is certainly an unusual series, ..so who knows i guess... i am glad it is happening. I really enjoy it.

I couldn't follow Houtarou's solving of the case, actually. Oh well the books were sold

. It was unexpected of him to move his ass for such a thing.

What I liked more and interesting was Mayaka and her "fight" with the other girl. In the scene of this episode they portrayed the feeling of being inferior to someone very well. It was like the writer of "A corpse by the evening" trolled everyone with making a great story and stopping afterwards.

Agreed, but well mangaka are nothing more than humans in the end. She simply wasn't interested anymore in following that route! It was bitter to see how the vice-president was still in love with her...

the new episode is quite a change in pace, and continues the examination of mystery and mystery solving. I quite enjoyed it after being puzzled for quite a bit of it. It is quite odd at times.
