Hyouka - Eru Chitanda should really get some rest. She's stressed!

by feal8730. July 2012 20:45

Hello,

Today we'll talk about the 15th episode of the spring season 2012 anime series named Hyouka that finally start to focus on a new mystery surrounding the school festival setting.

It seems that this thief is emulating one of the most popular detective fiction of Agatha Christie named "the A.B.C. Murders" and hitting one after another all the clubs in his way to complete the "combination".

We still have nearly no way to detect or speculate about which are the motives behind these events. However, I don't think we can honestly expect to get any "serious" reason from Hyouka.

Hyouka

Truth to be said, I don't think any of the characters newly introduced in this story arc are suspicious. Who can be the culprit? Will it be a new character altogether or an existing one from the previous arcs?

The only possible culprit in my mind is the News Poster club president named Masashi Tōgaito. He was searching for a good "story" since the beginning so it wouldn't be strange for him to try and create a mystery out of nothing...

By the way, am I the only one who is starting to hate Satoshi? In all these recent episodes, his attitude against Houtarou is getting less and less that of a friend to the point of making him start to look like a rival.

Just as you can see in this short video segment, Mayaka had a strong mental breakdown in this episode due to bullying by her fellow manga club members.

Even with the intervention of an upperclassman, the situation isn't going any better. How will Mayaka manage to regain the trust of everyone in the manga club?

I still don't understand the meaning of all this rivalrly/hate between Mayaka and the other girls, but I suppose it's something important in the eyes of an high school student...

Hyouka

Next episode will likely give us the solution to the school festival mystery with Houtarou shining once again after so many episodes of "nothing". It'll be also a nice way for him to recover since Irisu's incident...

I'm very curious about how Houtarou is going to be able to pick the correct culprit with this very small batch of information we have at the moment...

I also hope they'll resolve Mayaka's problems with the manga club, because it was quite heartstrucking watching her cry alone in this episode.

Hyouka

Concluding, Hyouka continues to be a very interesting series that I'll continue to watch and cover in this blog weekly.

See you soon,

This was an exciting and fun episode, i felt like we got a good balance back with all the main characters and even a glimpse of the evil Irisu
gliding along the corridor in all her glory.

I esp liked Eru in her nice role as usual as instigator and encourager for Houtarou, and we even got to see a nice bento lunch made for him by big sister. It sure looks yummy, mine never come out that well. I do think we may get a few more clues...no one has mentioned the missing manga which may be one of the missing items. Not sure but we will surely see some action next time. I am glad we can go back and watch all of this again, in HD once they get the BD issued. It will be easier on the nerves.

Agreed, all the characters shined and next week will be the climax for us! Can't wait really! *_*

It was extremely amusing to see Eru indeed, I liked especially the "Kininaru-blocked" scene. it seems that Houtarou is starting to understand how to control Eru, don't you agree?

Ahahah, definitely so. I'm going to re-watch this as well when the BD get released. it'll be nice to see again Mayaka and Eru in HD mode!

lol...I'm not even paying attention to what's happening with Mayaka and the Manga Club...

What I'm most curious about is what Satoshi says in the end...is he trying to have his moment or something? I thought a database wasn't supposed to do stuff like that

What a cruel guy! CRUEL I SAY! How can you resist to a crying Mayaka?

yes, that's my thought and main worry at the moment. Why is he trying to outdo Houtarou? Wasn't his purpose to be a database?

Moreover, what are the main reasons moving him to do that? It all started back at the beginning of the series when they've resolved the Hyouka mystery, do you remember?

the Manga Club stuff still puzzles me, i am not quite sure who did what to who or why it was such a trauma, but it has been balanced by enough other content that i dont mind not knowing about it all clearly.

I'd prefer Houtarou or Eru to have some character development. Why picking up the least interesting character of the story? Is that some kind of harassment against their own viewers?

I find his character to be an interesting mechanic. This idea that he's someone who only holds data, but can't do anything with it. Like a pinnacle of unbiased information or something...

That's the theory, but it doesn't work out that well in practice because in the end he's nothing other than a human. Humans are frail and easy to influence...I'm sure you know that...

I have never liked Satoshi or trusted him but that is part of the dynamic i think. and yes Houtarou is indeed learning to both appreciate and care about Eru, he was trying to say she looked tired....and he really does care in spite of himself. I love his indiffernce that covers up a deeply caring heart.

And Eru trying to practice the Principles of How to Manipulate People was soooo funny and she was soooo bad at it
but in the end she did achieve something ...but that was a hilarious scene.

This story is all about Houtarou growing up to be a different man, and I think he's slowly opening up to people.

Of course she was bad at it, because she's not such a girl. Still an entertaining scene that I liked a lot! *_*

Yes it was wonderful.....sooo cute.

and ys Houtarou is a really interesting fellow, one of the most enjoyable anime male characters in a long time, he is different and indiffernet enough to be intersting, yet not too bad or too cold and he has a good heart...and a fine mind, i esp like his intuition and how he solves puzzles...as does Eru

i still cant wait to hear what you have to say after the OVA .
but that is fun to look forward to.

yes that is right i was trying to think of who he reminds me of, it is Tomoya, and i do like Tomoya for the same reason, such good characters for their stories ....and so well voiced. perfect voicing, i wonder who they will use if they do a dub into English which i think may be a definite possibility given the huge popularity of this series, so far it is one of the most popular of the ongoing series currently.

I think Satoshi's really having a crisis of his own confidence. He's seen Houtarou move outside of the cocoon he had made for himself coming into high school, but he also sees himself falling behind. And he's repeatedly claimed pride in his 'database' status, but very few people are happy being the support guy, especially if Houtarou's getting more notoriety from it.

I really don't get what Mayaka's issue is. Maybe she feels bullied by the other girls. It is tough to be a single against a group of four catty bitches. And I wonder if we'll find out what the manga club president wanted her to dress as? It seems odd that so much of their focus is on her wanting to pick the characters she liked. But then we've seen that the atmosphere at this school tends to be overly serious and traditional.

Highway | 83 Comments - starstarstar | Reply

7/30/2012 10:59:48 PM #

feal87

Yeah, that's likely the issue here. If we think about it Satoshi always lived behind Houtarou's shadow, it must be hard to be always the "side-character" guy with no time to shine whatsoever...

Same thoughts here, the drama around Mayaka is overblown compared to the issue. Yes, there is a bit of bullying, but nothing extreme really and it seems that there is always someone to stop the bitches.

We'll see next week how they're going to resolve it I suppose! Quite looking forward to it!

The motive could be as simple as setting clues in order to test others to see if you're caught. It's certainly more about the fun of it instead of hurting people. Or it could be OCD and they are using the ABC pattern to commit their crime.

As for the suspects, the ones that stand out right now are the girl and boy who rival both Satoshi and Mayaka. That or maybe it's an inside job by 1 student of each club to create an interesting case.

He just wants to be able to have his own shining moment for once, and I personally hope he gets it. After all, if what he says is true that the only way to catch the thief is in the act, it's also true that Houtarou may not be the best one for the job.

The story is kind of silly at that point, come on just a candle was missing, don't tell me there were no spare candles. What a low level culprit in a low level mistery, haha it really annoys me that they care so much about unimportant things. atm I just watch it for the characters and their interaction to be honest

They indicated the yealousy of Satoshi a few episodes ago as well.
Well, I didn't like him from the start, guess he's dangerous.

Mayaka can only be a agressive torwards her friends, I would have slapped these idiotic cosplay girls, but Mayaka did nothing

Well, the mysteries are always unimpressive here, but we can't expect too much as they're trying not to insert any fantasy elements and stay as true as possible.

Yeah, they hinted at it since the very beginning, but its starting to become more and more dangerous as the episodes goes by...

She's just a tsundere for her friends, but wouldn't do that to an upperclassman I suppose...

Actually attend any student booth or class show at a festival and see how many spare supplies they may have??? usually zero and what they have is begged, borrowed and "loaned" often ..so that was actually fairly accurate.... i love the casual way this series unfolds, and that is one of the ways it feels so real...we never really know what is happening or what may happen, yet Houtarou manages to detect the hidden path that lights up only for the few with that special vision...or those with those violet eyes who know WHO to ASK for help

gotta love those eyes.....
