Hyouka - Mayaka! Most exciting cooking contest EVER!

Hello,

Today we'll talk about the 14th episode of the spring season 2012 anime series named Hyouka that continues to deliver entertaining slice of life episodes revolving around the school festival.

This time it was focused around a cooking contest and I have to say that it was an exciting one with Satoshi, Eru and Mayaka trying their best to win the contest.

Houtarou continues to exchange items with random characters (this time, two cute pumpkin girls) in his room and seems to be neglected to the point of being considered almost a side-character.

I was not expecting to end up this excited by watching a mere cooking contest between high school students. It was hilarious to watch Misaki Sawakiguchi "burning" cooking experience. :D

The best scene was definitely Mayaka running through the crowd to reach the field in order to compete in the contest. That sort of remind me that I like her for the hard-working good-willed personality she has.

This episode also "completes" Mayaka's substory, by letting her mend the relationship with the other girls in the manga club. However, I'm very curious about the content of the manga she lost and I hope they'll give it some focus later on...

Can someone please explain to me what exactly happened in this small video scene? Eru is trying to learn from Irisu the secrets of being an empress (or maybe I should say temptress?)?

That's a scary thing to think if we consider the already abnormal power of Eru's eyes. That could generate a monster of an unprecedented scale capable of ensnaring entire armies at once!

By the way, was I the only one enjoying Irisu in this scene? Thanks to Eru, we were able to see Irisu scream like a normal girl and I have to say that she was quite cute! That alone made this episode worth watching!

Next episode seems to tackle the real mystery of this school festival that is centered around some "thieves" stealing items from the various clubs while leaving a note behind.

I'm really unsure about what could be their reason, but I suppose it must be some student joke. Especially because the items being stolen are completely devoid of any value.

It seems that we'll also get some cute scene with Eru trying to use "Irisu's temptress appeal" to get what she wants from one poor guy. I wonder if she'll manage to sell more copies this way...

Concluding, Hyouka continues to be an interesting anime series that I suggest to anyone to watch. I just hope they'll be back with some mystery soon...

It's not what I define as a scream. What does "Hah" come under? A sound for discomfort makes sense, Chitanda is very powerful.

Now the missing ladle... While it's amusing to see Mayaka get mad over it, it kind of makes the mystery behind the lost items a bit closer. I can't stop thinking about how Houtarou will solve this with his mad mystery solving skills.

Casts of past Kyoto-animation were acted, It was very interesting.

Yukana(Irisu-senpai) as Teletha Tessa Testarossa in "Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu".
Kyo Fujibayashi's voice actress & Yuki Nagato's voice actress too.
Not kyoto-animation, Jun Fukuyama(Lelouch) as Satoshi's superior.
He was also acted in CLANNAD.

And, this time, especially, Tomokazu Sugita(Kyon in "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya") as Commentator in cooking contest.

Irisu "teaches' Eru how to exploit someone, using her feminine wiles. I am not as wild about that as you seem to be, for it seems exploitive and not in Eru's real character, which is charm and sincerity. I see Irisu as continuing to be the Evil Queen figure for the series, and tho it was fun to see her more human side, i still didnt feel she will in the end win, for she is now having a chance to try to subvert Eru just like she tried to subvert Houtarou. We will see more of her i think. the cooking contest is my least favorite episode so far as i really dont like Mayaka as much as you do, she is ok, but not worthy of so much attention almost the entire episode or a good part of it was her, and that rather meaningless side story with the manga club where we never did get any real explanation of what was going on, i am willing to wait and see more of this series which i really do like overall, but they tend to get a bit heavy handed with the randomness of things and relegating Houtarou to a nothing in this series, other than having a random contribution of food, was a bit over the top. It does create tension but watching this series week to week is hard, if i were watching it with all the episodes i would probably watch four or five at a time, as i have never enjoyed cliff hangers much. I was hopeful at one point that Houtarou might be drawn into the contest but instead we had to wait endless moments for Mayaka to remember her duty and that did not sit well with me.

I will hope for some more pure Hyouka next time, and less of the odd stuff.

Well, it was Eru that asked her those questions and she simply answered the best she can. No harms done and I'm sure next week we'll have some amusing scene with Eru trying to use those weapons against some male...

It all depends on tastes, I like cliffhangers...

heheh, ys.... she was answering, but she was giving advice from her own past experience of manipulating people, I can just imagine WHO it is that Eru wants to influence. I dont mind a cliff hanger or two, but they seem to use this a lot in this series, it does create a good overall mystery as we are really getting a lot of signs that someone is messing with the school festival and i would say either the original fellow who was expelled, or Elder Sister, i wonder if there is a chance SHE is actually him?? Anyway, i was never much good at guessing the WHO DONE IT of mysteries, some people are good at that and have the patience but i like to just enjoy the story and the adventure. The last major cooking contest i recall was that in the original 3 OVA version of Kujubiki Unbalance, not sure i recall others but i am sure there are some.

Yes i am trying to think of some too..... this one here in this episode is really well done, down to the little details...it does give a very interesting aspect considering the ban on food booths which is part of the history of the festival, i wonder why that was put in in the first place? maybe we will learn more about it at some point. I think we are going to soon see the past coming to the present and we may indeed even get to meet that original "leader" who was blamed for it all.....

ah, i remembered.....Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari has a cooking contest in the early episodes..... and also there is a cooking episode in , Akane-Iro ni Somaru Saka because his sister Minato is such a good cook and the others want to compete with her, but it is not a formal contest....

Isekai is an update of the Tenchi series, but has some lovely art and a fun story, not the highest of series, in plot as it gets a bit Haremy, but it is fun. If you watch the first five episodes you will get some of the best of it. Later on it become more of a mecha.

The normal kinda anticlimatic setting of Hyouka really starts to entertain me, after 14 episodes I got quite attached to the anime and it's characters ^_^

Eru and Mayaka looked so cute in this episode, especially the cosplay dress of Mayaka. Well Irisu is always attractive, with her dark aura and her beautiful appearance. She is no bad person in general.

That was a cool cooking competition

I hope they will solve the little "stolen items" mystery soon and that we will get some romance like the ending implies ^^

I differ, for Irisu is indeed somewhat dark, and even "bad" in the terms of the series, she exhibits no remorse about being revealed as an exploiter and manipulator and in fact goes so far as to "teach' these skills when asked with no shame whatsoever. I think she may lack a moral sense or come from an abusive home, she shows the signs of that but she is a good example of her type as found in other series.

This series has such a low key and calm approach to events which are often quite surprising that i think romance might happen without any fuss at all, which is the only way it would be possible for Houtarou anyway.

That looks exactly what I expect from a series in terms of developments. Unfortunately Hyouka seems to forget about character development and till this point we really know almost nothing about Eru's backstory/past/real personality and motives...

I havent kept up with Tari Tari, i will check it out. They have neglected character development, making Hyouka almost abstract and surreal, they may be able to pull it off tho, for if it is successful, it could be a new genre of its own, explaining very little but offering a new form of continuing surprise. I am hopeful, tho at times the series seems to lag a lot.... i guess we have quite a few episodes still to see what happens.

One way to see the absence of character background and back story is ...it is VERY realistic, when we meet people and spend time with them, such as in school, we may not ever talk to them about formative experiences, indeed we oursleves or they may not have thought about those things themselves or may not remember them that well, ....so it is quite realistic in a way, just like a anime series that does not explain a lot of things can be very real feeling..but too much can be confusing too, for one is left guessing a lot. I think here they are being very crafty and careful, like a really good Go player, looking ahead many moves....but we will indeed see...

Well, yes Hyouka is actually a rather good reproduction of real life situations in both settings and characters. There isn't that "outworldish" feeling that other series makes you feel...

Just about to get there to TariTari, i have spent some very fun time this weekend studying School festival movies posted by Japanese high school students, some of them are really wonderful, i found a girl dance group that danced in a movie made by a movie club at a festival that is amazing, world class talent, and they are probably all graduated and on in their lives now, Hyouka does a really good job i can see, from studying the originals, at conveying the excitment and feeling of the Festival, it is indeed one of the most important events in the three year period of school for many i can see so this series makes a lot more sense even than it did before.

I'm long behind as I always watch series long after they've aired...

Anyway, every episode I've been watching Hyouka, Eru seems to remind me of a girl I know, although I don't talk to her much. They just look similar and although I doubt the person I know in real life would go "Watashi kininarimasu" all the time, I can imagine it! However, she doesn't have Eru's eyes, but who could possibly possess such supernatural weapons?
