Hello,
Today we'll talk about the first episode of the summer season 2012 anime series named Sword Art Online that starts with a great slow paced episode introducing us to the virtual reality system.
At the same time we get to know the main character (Kirito) that turns out to be a game fanatic. It's a bit sad that we got no introduction for the main heroine (Asuna Yuuki) in this episode as she only got few seconds of screentime near the end of the episode.
I suppose Kirito will get to know her only after he is already improved a bit in level/power and I'm sure they'll end up clashing on some arguments before becoming "friends"/"lovers".

I wonder why they said that resources would be "limited", because typically in MMORPG there are quite fast "respawn" rates for monsters or even bosses. That is the main key in order to allow "longevity" to the game and make it a time-sink.
Of course, that is unless the system makes death be permanent for monsters as well. That will create a situation where only a very small number of players could reach the final levels leaving many weak and defenseless players.
That would create really problematic developments like PK (Player Killing) or even "slavery" for weak players. I suppose that's where Guilds come in to protect the weak...
After watching this small scene at the end of the episode I was a bit unsure about what to think of the players's reactions to the horrible news.
While I have no problem about the commonfolk reaction (being scared in such a situation is pretty normal), I am a bit doubtful about Kirito's attitude.
You get locked out in a fantasy world with nearly zero chances to survive and you can manage to be that "cool" since the very beginning? Quite unrealistic...

The preview segment shows us a rather creepy room containing all the names of the various players getting dashed out just as they die in-game.
I really wonder if that is an actual place in the game (maybe the room before the final boss?!) or just some dramatic build-up created specifically for the preview...
Next episode will cover the first month of gaming, just as people begins to level up and guilds start to get formed. I speculate a good chunk of players (40-50%) will die out in the first month...

Concluding, Sword Art Online configures itself as as anime series with great possibilities to become a masterpiece. I'll be sure to watch and blog about this regularly on this blog.
See you soon,
