Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita - What did I just watch?!

by feal874. July 2012 23:59

Hello,

Today we'll talk about the first episode of the summer season 2012 anime series Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita that somehow delivers the most unexpected first episode of the whole season till now.

The story premise is quite simple and revolves around a world where human population declined to the point where the civilization lost most of their technology.

In this world the other most prosperous race is the "fairies" one, that on the other side looks a lot more advanced compared to humans. The story follows one girl named "Watashi" that somehow get involved with the fairy world.

Jinrui Wa Suitai Shimashita

Just by reading the premise I would say "oh, that's a charming premise!", but after watching the first episode my opinion ended up becoming quite different.

The animation from AIC A.S.T.A. was great and all the characters looked like imported from a fairytale. The animation was smooth and generally of high quality.

We can probably say the same for the seiyuu, because we have big names like Mai Nakahara (Reimi Odajima from Bamboo Blade, Rena Ryugu from Higurashi, etc..) in Watashi's role, Hisako Kanemoto, etc...

...but just as you can see from this small scene, the content of this series is completely random. I've watched the first episode two times and I really still don't understand it...

Ok, so we have talking bread that kill himself in a bloody scene while explaining its not real blood. All of this in order to be eaten by Watashi...

If this was Shining Bread, I could even forgive them, but...I really don't know what to say here. Does this have any hidden meaning?

Jinrui Wa Suitai Shimashita

I fully expect this series to be heavily discussed in the anime blogosphere, because as soon as the content get "cloudy" lots of people will start to speculate about what are the hidden meanings behind each scene...:P

Next episode will probably delve deeper into the food factory with Watashi discovering more and more about the strange creatures who "live" within it.

I'm not sure if I should be eager to know more about the story, or I should be scared about the possible outcomes...

Jinrui Wa Suitai Shimashita

Concluding, Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita is an interesting series with a strange story to follow. I'm not going to cover this reguarly, but I'll keep watching because they surely got my attention! :D

See you soon,

Maybe you should watch the bread of happiness for 24 hours straight in order to recover? Will that help?

Bread suicide is hilarious.

Going by MyAnimeList... I prefer her name as Okashi, "Sweets" is cuter than "I".

Not sure, maybe Okashi is the name used by the fairy to call her?

You either call her Watashi based on her being a narrator or Okashi based on her feeding the fairies sweets.

Oh gosh, this surprised me so much... I just picked it up because I had nothing else to do and my RSS feed from Commie had that as the last thing released... But I ended up breaking my words record with a 2028 words post. This was definitely the best first episode of Summer 2012 so far, and I doubt anything else can top it. So much social commentary and so much to analyze... Well, I guess I can now safely dump myself together with those "lots of people" who "speculate about the meaning behind each scene". But here I actually found most of them to be rather objective, despite the sheer weirdness.

You know, I completely agree with you - it is totally random, indeed. And strange. But it has a great main character and great narration. This episode set my expectations really high for this show, despite having come into it with zero.

Somehow deep in my heart I thought "oh, this may be something Dusk may actually like". Hell, I would have never thought I would be spot on this time around really.

The series isn't bad, great animation, good voiceover, cute protagonist, but the story...well, I'll keep watching and maybe if it start to make sense I'll blog it too.

Of course, I'll continue to read your posts if you'll make more!

You really were spot on, then. I truly loved it^^

Well, the story is weird as hell, that's for sure. It'll probably start to make more sense later on, though even if it doesn't, I won't be too disappointed as long as it keeps up this level of social commentary. Despite random, it was still an interesting setting with more potential besides the accurate criticism it demonstrated in this episode. I'll be looking forward to its development, even though I have no idea where it will go from here.

Thanks^^ I've already decided I'll be adding this to my share of shows this season, so there will certainly be more.

We'll see how the story will progress from this point on, judging from the info available there won't be many recurring characters apart from Watashi/Okashi. I wonder how that will play out...

Looking forward to the many books I'll read!

As long is her narrations keep being that good, I don't mind it to be stuck with the main character^^ (I still find it strange to call her Watashi/Okashi, though I'll probably have to stuck with one of those since "main character" is way too long for blog posts...)

Seriously, that's 4 MS Word pages, it's definitely not a book! xD

xD Yeah, Nakahara Mai is a great seiyuu. When I first watched Higurashi about one and a half years ago (yeah, I was rather late) and was checking on the seiyuu's I was like: "What? How can that be Nagisa's voice!" ;P

*sigh* I get that one from everyone... I actually make an effort to write smaller posts than I'd like to, you know! Such efforts should be appreciated too xS

I watched it and was like "what the heck did I just watch?" I mean, I'm not a fan of a show that comes right out and just blasts an episode of exposition at you, but this one seemed a little bit *too* light on giving the background of what was going on.  From the synopses that I read, it seemed like the Fairies were kinda in charge or something, but they sure didn't seem to be, they seemed more like an out of control infestation (you have to trick them into sleeping in separated boxes so they don't multiply? whaaaa?).

Pretty sure the credits said "watashi" for the character name.

The whole story is extremely random to the point where I don't feel confident to make speculations. Why the fairies mass produce food for humans? Why is this food TALKING?!
I really think that even Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon was clearer...

yes, that's what I noticed as well, but somehow I heard that later in the story they call her "okashi" as well...

I loved this weird stuff XD At first I also thought, haha that makes no sense guys. From it's description I expected to see cute loli fairies, but they were rather creepy. Depending on the further development this show might be a hit or turn out as something crappy with unused potential.

If this was Shining Bread, I could even forgive them, but...I really don't know what to say here. Does this have any hidden meaning?

Most everything happening in this show is pretty much social commentary in some way. The bread robot is cute and adorable to hide the fact that there's nothing particularly great about factory-processed food (at least in regards to nutrition and taste). Loaf-kun can't handle the idea of someone turning down the bread, after it's gone at length into how "marvelous" it all is--and it seems that deep down it recognized its existence was a sham from the very beginning. Rather than being an actual loaf of wholesome carrot bread, Loaf-kun is merely an imitation designed to mimic the taste of such bread. It's an example of how modern society values cheap substitutes more than the real thing.

Mind = Blown.
I really can't think of these things and connections while watching anime, but I do think that you're right now that I read your comment. I wonder if they'll continue in the same way for the whole 12 episodes, it may actually end up becoming the new "Melody of Oblivion", if you remember that series...
