Hyouka - Houtarou's sister is awesome! Irisu is defeated!

by feal872. July 2012 22:47

Hello,

Today we'll talk about the 11th episode of the spring season 2012 anime series Hyouka that concludes in a wonderful way the "movie mystery" arc revealing to us the real nature of Irisu.

Yes, the real revelation of this episode wasn't much the real movie content, but about Irisu's true personality that finally surfaced after being confronted with Houtarou's final deductions.

Well, in the end we get to know that she was just an horrible person. A spoiled brat that wants everything to work exactly as she thinks it should work and don't care about the feelings of other people.

Hyouka

Even considering the circumstances, am I the only one thinking that both Houtarou (what was that pale look when confronted by Satoshi?!) and the other members of the classics club raised up too much fuss about all this "search the truth behind the movie"?

I do understand somehow the "I don't share your view on the matter", but isn't all that big reaction something "abnormal" or somewhat unrealistic?!

Houtarou is just a normal high school guy trying to deduct something on his free time and well, he did fail for once. So what? Is failing once such a big problem?

Just as you can see in this short video scene, all our hopes for some jealousy showdown between Irisu and Eru are destroyed because Irisu isn't interested in Houtarou at all.

By the way, was I the only one that was happy to see Irisu getting owned by Houtarou's sister? Tomoe (her name) must be even more awesome in deductions compared to Houtarou!

I can't wait to see her appear in some future arcs, it should be interesting to see which relationship she'll have with Eru...*__*

Hyouka

Judging from the small preview segment, next episode seems to be back on light hearted content because they show us an extremely happy Eru Chitanda. Yes, even more happy than normally!

The theme seems to be the cultural festival of the school, so well we may get some of the traditional scenes they generally show us in such events. Haunted house? Maid Cafè?

To be honest, I would pay much just to see Mayaka in a cat ears maid costume. I'm sure she will fit perfectly in the role! *_*

Hyouka

Concluding, Hyouka is still proving to be an extremely interesting series that sometimes shifts far away from the "mystery" genre in order to tackle a little bit of drama.

I'll continue to watch and blog the future episodes as well!

See you soon,

ah ha, yes the Sister. I got a slightly different take from the text messages which are hard to follow..and the mysterious absent older sister. But first, ....i do disagree re the importance of the real focus of Eru as to what was behind the mystery. I was quite impressed that she would care and notice what had been done to the hidden author of the movie plot who i guess we may never meet. It showed she cares about people with the depth that makes her a very unusual character and frankly i was myself shocked that I had not thought about this at all, i was so selfishly focused on the titillation of the possible thrill of a battle between Eru and Irisu, i realized that i was once again exploiting anime characters for my own excitement, and i felt bad and ashamed. The writers are working at such a sophisticated level that they actually called me on my own motives, Major points to them.  So yes i do think it is important and impressive that the characters DO care about such motivation and are not just staying at the usual level of involvement with their own more immediate goals.

With that out of the way, i was very impressed again with Hotaro's deductive abilities once the distraction of Irisu was out of the way, and that was also quite realistic, few men have NOT been distracted in such ways by scheming females, and vice versa i am sure, females by scheming males. ....me among them both, on the being deceived side ( i am not clever enough to be the deceiver).....and glad he had the courage to confront the evil Irisu who was indeed revealed to be a very nasty and selfish person. I was so glad to see Eru and Hotaro caring about each other "being themselves" that was such a nice way to show their true personal relation is indeed growing and what a nice way to do it.

As for the sister, i got the feeling that she too is a manipulator, and she was the one who suggested that Irisu contact the Classics Club with the idea that her brother might find it interesting, I an mot sure that she intended to reveal anything about Irisu, but on the other hand, merely used her and her selfish nature to draw Hotaro into the crisis to give him some chance to both be "interested" and also as a secondary sisterly goal, perhaps to expose him to a scheming female to "learn" from it, for i do feel that the sister is also a scheming female ...and don't trust or like her to the degree that you seem to.

And on a final note, i was NOT happy about the way the other two members of the Classics Club acted in this, quite frankly i am taking a real dislike to the breezy and shallow nature of Satoshi, and his glib presumptions and way he treats Houtarou, i dont think it is respectful or honest and to be revealing that he, Santoshi, had all of these doubts so long after he started to feel them does not speak well for him or his care for Hotaro who frankly i do think he is jealous of and does not really like. And the way he treats Mayaka is another sign of his shallow and insincere character, so at this point, he is my least favorite character in the entire show, even under Irisu who has her own evil charm.  As for Mayaka who i do like still, she should have spoken up sooner to Hotaro but i think she is jealous of the growing feelings between him and Eru, so SHE too is jealous of him and wanted to bring him down a bit i think maybe, this is just conjecture at this point and I am sure if it is true it will be shown more later.

I too look forward to the Cultural event, i LOVE those, they are so much fun, and we may even have some hopes for Yakata, and costumes indeed, but again, 10 points our of 10 for the series, they have again shown that this is a Gold Level show and very very high quality indeed.

Eru clearly said that she thinks she is similar to the original author of the movie and that is making her understand more about her intentions. It's not such a shameful thing to expect enjoyment from an anime series, but I do agree that they managed to keep romantic interest out of the way and create a great story without it.

Ahahah, but in the end I do not think Irisu has done something that evil to be shouted at in that way. She is just a spoiled brat that wants everything to go exactly as she pleases, but they could just ignore her and that's it. Houtarou on the other side looked extremely "angered" to the truth. He probably did care too much about the compliments he received from her...

Tomoe is likely a manipulator, but I don't think she is evil at all. She's just trying to make his brother grow up by experiencing good and bad things inside the classics club. I can sort of understand her reasoning and I really want to see her together with Houtarou in some future arc...

Ahahah, I love Mayaka from the bottom of the heart so I can't really relate with your feelings. She's just a bit too much tsuntsun, but I think she'll eventual show her dere side to everyone. She's not inherently a bad girl, otherwise she would've just ignored Houtarou instead of telling him that he likely failed for once.

The main problem with this "you failed" stuff is that they overblown the drama effect making everything seems less realistic...

Bunny girl Eru and Nekomimi maid Mayaka and I'll shout "SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!".

The "correct" answer is not the best answer. Although I had her as my choice because she would be the only one with a rope. Houtarou's idea is better than the original as he has more experience or talent. Houtarou's simple answer is best.

The movie is more interesting than hating on Irisu. If she had harmed Chitanda, I wouldn't be able to shut up. Houtarou is strong enough to take anything. I just hope it hasn't harmed his solving abilities, but that's very unlikely.

I agree Mayaka is not really bad, just fierce...and i do like her too, tho Eru is my favorite...  if we get costumes i too will give over any money required without any questions lol, i would LOVE to see maid costumes, esp. sigh.

well re the movie and the motivations, it was quite a remarkable development overall, i had no idea a simple plot event might be so complex but this is Japan and the Japanese culture at every level is skilled at depths of interaction that many other cultures just don't have the skill for, I am still earning as hard as I can, and can appreciate a lot more about these interactions and what is implied and left unsaid a lot more than when i started watching anime. The rewards are great for we can enjoy more and more on may more levels than just plot events.... and can enjoy the devious and complex ways that people can affect or try to affect each other....

i am ready for some more fun, so i am glad we get a new phase, that was a tough cycle but we made it thru, and Eru and Houtarou are safely back in each others good graces
...if they are happy i am happy.

Maid costumes are good, if combined with nekomimi they're even better!

The story is quite good and I was expecting Irisu to be the final boss. I just hope they'll continue with interesting arcs like this one instead of random episodic small stories...

Same thoughts here, let's see what they'll talk about next week. Still many episodes to go!

Cat ears are sooo cute on the right people.... truly the japanese love of cats is epic..

Thinking on it more, I think Irisu really did deserve to be yelled at i think for she was trying to get away with using Houtarou AND ignoring the original Author's desire for no deaths while at the same time pretending to herself that she was "protecting" the author from having hurt feelings, such double duplicity once developed as a constant approach to life can really twist and harm someone and make them into a scheming monster, so it was good for Houtarou to challenge her strongly, ....

and as for the "you failed" aspect, there is a lot of honor involved in such things in Japanese school culture for it is one of the first chances they have to have that kind of risk and success or failure, that kind of risk and result is very important in life decisions, and events...and so i do think it is realistic that they would feel it strongly.... but that is a guess from study of the school and cultural systems over there, as I am NOT Japanese....but i do strive to understand them as much as possible for a Gaijin who admires them much.

yes, but still Houtarou is just an underclassman and an unrelated guy to her. I doubt he has rights to say much against her behaviour, especially as nothing illegal happened.

I agree on that, but from my point of view as a westerner guy...its just random idiocy. Everyone makes errors, its just normal!

Oh, yes they are one of the most interesting pairings i have seen in a long time maybe even since Kaname and Soske in FMP, there is a lot of fire and total independence between Eru and Houtarou which makes it very clean and interesting when they relate closely such as at the end of the Hot springs visit, and during the first few episodes when they were discovering each other, what makes it especially interesting is that you see some of the chemistry that comes with the very best of relationships where both people can just be themselves and they care about the other staying themselves, no one is trying to "remake" or fix the other...and in the process of sharing they discover more of their own selves as well. I do hope for that, for it will be classic if they do....

"Even considering the circumstances, am I the only one thinking that both Houtarou (what was that pale look when confronted by Satoshi?!) and the other members of the classics club raised up too much fuss about all this "search the truth behind the movie"?"

It depends on how you want to look at it. They weren't supposed to be making the film: Hongou was. It comes down to, "yeah, the script you came up is great Oreki" but it was supposed to remain true to how Hongou wanted it. Something just didn't click. Hence the fuss.

"Houtarou is just a normal high school guy trying to deduct something on his free time and well, he did fail for once. So what? Is failing once such a big problem?"

I think the failure stems from the fact that he was led into a trap by Irisu. As Satoshi pointed out in this arc, Oreki, unlike most of the other little mysteries so far, was more determined to figure out what the ending could be thanks to Irisu supposedly believing in his talents. And since everyone relies on him, just him failing due to false praise is not acceptable. Maybe

Agreed, but its not much about saying "hey you're doing it wrong", but their reactions. Their face was almost like something HORRIBLE happened...

I have to agree that the whole reason for his "miss" was because Irisu prepared a trap for him, but I suppose he couldn't really predict that too, can he?!

I finally caught up with Hyouka, this was the best ep so far, if I would be Chitanda I would jump on Houtarou, he's so cool XD

It was a nicely directed episode, even though the club members where are bit too harsh on Houtarou only because he forgot one detail in his conclusion. I mean Satoshi was really pissed, like he was betrayed by Houtarou. I think this guy will cause problems in the later story progress.

I couldn't really follow the chat, I only knew who Irisu was *rofl* how lame.

Ya, i agree re Satoshi, even tho he plays the essential revealing role of the "best friend" i dont really trust him or like him much, he tries to act superior even while praising Houtarou, i think he is actually a male version of Irisu, and for that I am very wary of what he may do. And he really is mean to the other member of the Classics Club...how did she get to be a member anyway? i never did see her actually "sign up" but it just seemed to happen. Well next one should be a bit more relaxed which is good as that cycle was quite exhausting and tense at times...esp when they left us hanging in betweens.
