Hyouka - She's trying to deceive Houtarou! Fuyumi Irisu is evil!

by feal8725. June 2012 23:57

Hello,

Today we'll talk about the 10th episode of the spring season 2012 anime series Hyouka that finally manages to interest me with some well-thought mystery and character development.

This episode supposedly contained the solution to the closed-room mystery shown in the movie. It was a nice solution thought by Houtarou, but was "too simple" to be the correct one...

In fact, we get the revelation right at the end that something was overlook by Houtarou during his deductions. Something extremely important...

 Hyouka

One thing that striked me in this episode was Satoshi's reaction to the slow change that Houtarou is experiencing in these last couple of weeks. Yes, talking about that gloomy expression he had for some seconds...

He looked like depressed, maybe because the lazy Houtarou started to look active to the point that he may end up "not needing" the help of his database skills anymore.

By the way, was I the only one sad that Eru had nearly zero screentime in this episode? She's like an energetic small animal that I can't live without...:P

If you watch this scene and all the other scenes in which she appears you'll soon understand that she's evil and is trying to manipulate Houtarou for some unknown reason!

She looks amused by Houtarou's deduction, because she likely knows the real story and the whole "sickness" of the original writer never existed in the first place.

Houtarou on the other side, is completely devoured by Irisu's beauty and sweet words to the point of losing reason and becoming less of the protagonist we loved till now.

Hyouka

I may be completely wrong, but I'm starting to think that the original writer of the novel was Irisu and everyone knows about it except for the classics club. She knows everything and decided to play around with Houtarou after knowing of his skills, like some way to test herself with it.

Or maybe she was stuck without being able to find a reasonable ending for her story and decided to ask someone else for advice on how to complete it.

It's strange that the original writer is still "M.I.A." after all these episodes and everything seems to magically revolve around her. She must be the focus of the mystery...

Hyouka

Concluding, Hyouka is finally taking an interesting turn with this story arc. I hope they'll keep up with twists and interesting character developments.

See you soon,

I need my weekly dose of Eru cuteness! T-T

I honestly forgot about the rope, reminds me a bit of the Hyouka case too. Y'know, Houtarou getting everything but a single detail right but that one detail is also the key. Maybe it will become a habit.

Where is my "kininarimasu"?! Where is it?! *_*

yeah, but in Hyouka's case it was impossible for him to notice because that detail was out of reach right?

In this case looks like he was "charmed" by Irisu to the point of losing his powers. Don't you agree?

True, there's also the fact that while Houtarou got the best deduction skills ever, he needs help to gather information and the like.

A beautiful girl that is nicknamed "empress" by the rest of the school? If she ain't a manipulator then I'll eat my copy of Tales of Symphonia.

That's what a database is for, or not? They're the best team all four together! They must be together in order to resolve in a proper way mysteries.

I mean, what is Hyouka without Eru going "sparkly eyes"?

While I agree with you, don't eat it! Send it to me! I will make good use of it! *__*

Yeah, it didn't feel right to see Houtarou alone in the clubroom while solving the problem.

It's a *shudder* common mystery series. Please come back next week Eru!

Did I say something? Send what? I can't seem to remember.

Chitanda was having a break after her embarressing drunk scene

Even if Houtarou's solution isn't entirely correct, it does fulfil the needs of the movie. I didn't consider the camera man because I refused the idea of a seventh person.

I'm satisfied with the ending even if the rope didn't make it into the film. If the props guy was in on her plan for Houtarou to make the ending, he might have been trying to add more noticeable props so his work is more recognised.

Ahahahah, but that's unfair. How are we going to survive without more sparkly eyes and "kininarimasu" delusions?!

We'll probably see more about it next episode, especially if they decided to dedicate a full other episode there must be some bigger reason behind these whole events. Don't you agree?

By the way, Mayaka was such a cutie with her "gomen ne..." *___*

Her laugh while drunk is enough for me. I'll be over rewatching that scene. I'll wait till something can top it.

Someone pulling the strings is great for a final answers arc, but it's too early to do it now. I can't imagine anything better than the play. Then again, before I couldn't imagine anything better than ice cream either
I bet they'll go back to episodic mysteries which are ok in a way, but I only really feel complete after the arcs.

Chitanda is my target, I will never change my view. At least not until Mayaka canmatch her cuteness.

Strangely enough, although the conclusion was a good twist, it had a few flaws. Showing total disregard to the rope is the main issue, what ever happened to it? Maybe Irisu just wanted a conclusion that will fit and doesn't care about the nitty gritty detail. Then again, it might be deeper than that.

It will definitely go deeper than that, I'm expecting next episode to bring the final solution that will somehow involve Irisu. She looked suspicious since the beginning after all, she even investigated over Houtarou's past...

I miss Eru too, she is so special and unique...and she and Houtarou have such an interesting non relationship relationship, tho nothing is said outright, their chemistry is what has fueled the Classics Club from the start, do they even realize it? i am wondering if the writer (s) are not going to give us any help on that, and will in fact empower either her or Irisu to break into Houtarou's self imposed exile from life....  it is possible that the mystery cycle is ended already, now that would be a surprise...but i think maybe we will get some more info about that. Needless to say, i am loving this series.... and Eru and Houtarou a lot...Irisu i dont trust.

Yeah, the classics club works only because there is Eru's curiosity and Houtarou's skills at resolving mysteries...

SAme thoughts here, I don't trust Irisu. She has that aura of evilness around her that somehow makes me think that she's just playing with Houtarou.

Eru on the other side is a pure girl, I would never suspect her of anything. She's just a little angel...*_*

When all else fails, blame the cameraman, lol

But yeah, I think that was too good of a twist for someone who's supposedly an amateur at mystery themed stories. Though I can't really think of a nice use for that rope other than using it as an escape.

I was also intrigued by Satoshi's mood shift. My guess is he feels envious of Houtarou's ability to deduct and find the truth, while all he can do is be a database of random facts. Don't want them to fight though.

Lack of Eru was disappointing, but at least Mayaka and the abnormally cute Sawakiguchi was there :3

Of course we'll blame the cameraman, unless he is a beautiful girl! In that case we can forgive as well...*_*

I don't think its about that, but more about feeling Houtarou getting far away from him. he's likely just a big male tsundere too.

Yep, Sawakiguchi was really an unexpected surprise in terms of cuteness. I already noticed a lot of fanarts starting to appear about her...

I'm still rooting for my "one of the girls did it" theory if Houtarou is in fact wrong. I went back and rewatched ep 8 and I noticed an open window in the same hall, but at the side of the building. That defeats the "second locked room" that Houtarou was talking about. Dunno what follows though

Maybe, but..why Hyouka!? Why use of male tsundere!? >.<

Only found one so far *looks harder*

i keep wondering about the blocked back corner of the murder room, they never really considered if there is another entrance to that room behind all of that stuff, but since WE are dependent on OUR cameraperson (the anime it self)..then i guess we are in the same fix as the Classics Club.

but anything is possible with this series..which is one of the things i love about it, it really has good writing as well as 100 percent good characters.

We'll see next week how Houtarou will be able to give us a good explanation for all the events.

As I said before, I'm more curious about what is Irisu's involvement in this whole string of events compared to the movie ending. She sounds a lot more mysterious after this episode, its like she is trying to control Houtarou somehow...

yes that is a good point that i like Houtarou missed lol, being a dumb guy....but really she does open up the series for i think the writers take Irisu seriously and that may mean some serious waves in the major relationships of the Classics Club will be interesting to see, for there is much that is new and fresh in this series, so much so that i really dont like to wait for next week to see what happens, but that is the fun of a new series, and we get to be "here" for it as it unfolds. I am feeling that it may be time for the writers to bring Eru back into focus and to bring her into closer contact with Houtarou to balance off Irisu, i will be sad if they dont give her a chance Eru, to shine.....  i do like her a lot. The story device of the Four Major Families is a brilliant one for it reminds us that Japan is a society that has both modern and tradition and both are equally powerful and so stories that reflect this are some of my favs.

Eru going "jealous" over Houtarou? That's something I'm expecting as well, but I'm unsure if it'll actually happen or they'll decide to skim over it.

Whenever we watch series that are currently running, it's a pain to wait one week each time, but that's also part of the magic because it allows us to have these discussions and speculate about what will happen to our heroes!

BP i think you may enjoy this, i certainly do..it has a LOT going for it and wonderful art style as well.

Ys they may skim, they use a very light touch here, in this series, which is one of the magical things about it, they never rub our noses into things and the characters touch each other lightly and then float on, just as happens often in real life...yet the tapestry of their interrelations is being woven ever stronger and closer and more interesting... i have absolutely NO idea what may come before it is all done. None. and that is great fun.

Ahahah, yes I agree with you on this. I am still impressed by how close they are to real-life when adapting this story.
Even the life of these students is a lot more similar to what you would expect from an high school compared to many other series with bigger fantasy elements.

Yes high School in Japan is a very important time in peoples lives and a lot happens ...they take club activities very seriously and it is very real power that officers and leaders wield, and there are shifting alliances and relationships forming and reforming often in small cliques all the time, so it is a complex social hot bed of events, intrigue, and learning about life. They have been on an intense track of high pressure learning and work and school life expands greatly in those three years, and I agree many school series have a lot of fantasy, in Hyouka, they really are distilling all of that and using a small view to show a huge world..in addition they have included vingnette mini views of the Old Families and we see Eru's classic traditional Family Mansion, similar in size and tone to the wonderful family mansion in Kure-nai. So much to enjoy and appreciate.

Kure-nai, you remember me that series! I really didn't like it to be honest, the premise was a bit "crazy" with all that mediator shit.
I preferred a lot another novel from the same author named Denpa Teki na Kanojo. The main heroine was the incarnation of cuteness...*__*

well i ignored taht mediator stuff mostly and focused on the little girl who was awesomely cute and the relation between her and the protector kid, i really enjoyed that and the loony ladies who lived in the run down apartment building, we got to see some aspects of Japanese life that most series never touch, i was not wild about the ending and the reconciliation with the evil father but the OVAs made clear that there would be a good romance later on when she grew up. And the art was first rate.

i am guessing two things may happen, we may see some interaction between the two female "superpowers".....and we may see the relationship between Eru and Houtarou which has been (for Japanese sensibilities) thankfully entirely unspoken, we may see it move into the realm of confession even if it may be subtle or just barely talked about.... if I can imagine some delicious ways it can go, i can only guess how much fun the writers and the director had in the weekly strategy planning sessions in Tokyo during creation...

Ahahah, that's so going to become a worthy battle. Eru is going to be extremely jealous of Houtarou as soon as she knows of his "relationship" with the empress. :

Yes for the Empress managed to make Houtarou "feel" special, even tho Eru has been making it clear that SHE knew that from the start, and in fact depends on it. One of the most interesting episodes was the Hot springs visit, tho not much happens and H is out of it for much of it, but something is started in the plot during that time, where we see Eru and Houtarou as equals, due to his illness, and her fear of the sisters' friction which turns out to be her fears rather than reality....

the writers here are capable of just about any kind of twist and turn, so i am going to tighten my grip and prepare to hold on....not knowing really what may come.
