Fate Zero - Can't believe it really ended. We need MORE Saber!

by feal8723. June 2012 23:49

Hello,

Today we'll complete the coverage of the anime series Fate Zero talking about the 25th and last episode (12th of the second season).

In the end we didn't really got a battle between Gilgamesh and Saber, because Kiritsugu's order forced Saber to destroy the grail and left Gilgamesh to face a big mass of mud falling from the sky.

Was I the only one laughing hard at the "naked Gilgamesh" scene at the end? What they were trying to do with that? Fanservice for the ladies?! :P

FateZero

It was extremely heartbreaking to watch Kiritsugu wander through the city like a ghost in search for survivors, with his ideal and reason-to-exist completely destroyed.

I wonder why Kirei decided to avoid face him or use Gilgamesh against him. I mean, it was an easy chance to take revenge over the guy who "killed" him.

It's a shame they didn't show young Taiga and how she got to know Kiritsugu (or the simple fact that she resembled Shirley). It was one of the parts I was more looking forward to...

Did you see that smug face Kirei makes after watching Rin cry? I will have to play again all the death scenes they reserved for him in Fate Stay Night, especially the one where he gets killed by the same knife. :D

Nasu really made a great job in creating Kirei's character and personality. He's the perfect villain and it's nearly impossible to love him.

I wonder how his child (Caren Ortensia) feel about her late father. I don't remember much from the visual novel Fate Hollow Ataraxia as I played it too much time ago...

FateZero

After more than nine months (including the break in-between), Fate Zero reaches the ending that we all knew about. The ending that is also the beginning of Fate Stay Night...

It has been an entertaining experience talking about each and every episode and try to speculate together with you what would happen.

I wonder how much time will pass before we'll find another series of this quality level to talk about, but I hope you'll be still here to read my ramblings. ;)

FateZero

Concluding, Fate Zero is definitely a masterpiece of the anime world and one of the series I would suggest to anyone looking for a exciting story with charming characters and high production values.

Visual Points : 860/1000 (Some scene in the first season were a bit bad to be honest)

Audio Points : 915/1000 (Great songs all along, few series can sport such a good soundtrack)

Story Points : 900/1000 (Compelling storyline full of twists at every turn.)

Entertainment Points : 875/1000 (The first season wasn't really up to par with the second)

Characters Points : 890/1000 (Shirley and Iris will be in my heart forever)

Final Points : 17.730/20.000

The series is ranked 6th over 177 series in my rankings (Updated to 23/06/2012 23:23)

See you soon,

I would assume that Kirei didn't try to attack Kiritsugu because 1) he already looked completely defeated and 2) he had technically already won the war

And you would let the guy who killed you escape without torturing him a bit? Sounds strange to me, I wouldn've charged right against him immediately and...well kill him.

No comment about Gilgamesh's scene? What the fuck were they thinking? Gimmeh Saber! xD

Don't try to hide it, Empty Blue! If you had gotten the Holy Grail, we know you would have wished for more of that, just as Kirei (apparently) did.
And somehow I doubt there's a lack of Saber fanservice in the Nasu Universe, so no more complaining! ;P

At any rate, can't say I really understood half of what happened at the end of this series. I suppose if I had watched/played the original series, I'd get it all. But apparently the Holy Grail is the Random Grail, and is there to make everyone suffer. I must wonder if the Holy Grail is one of Kyuubey's little inventions!

Ahahah, I agree that I would've used the grail for something grandiose, but about the nature of my wish...well I'll keep it as a secret for now.

The Holy Grail is corrupted by a malevolent entity, and yes without reading all the extra material + the original series its quite hard for anyone to fully understand what's happening.

Kyuubey doesn't invent evil devices, because Kyuubey isn't evil!

Kirei not being bothered about Kiritsugu seemed obvious, there wouldn't have been anything fun in it for him, he expected someone like himself (Shirou) but all he got was a kid in an adult's body trying to play hero. Looking at it that way he really must have been disappointed in the end.

And yeah, naked Gil was kind of weird but Fate/Zero is strangely full of stuff like that when you think about it and the Servant's backstories.

Except for shoehorning the scene with Lancelot in I thought that they really nailed the ending though, Shirou's scenes was amazing and they managed to include just about everything. While Waver's scene would have been better with the two controllers part, Kariya's death seemed to further crush Sakura, the irony in some of Kirei's actions were great, and later scenes were done well enough as well. All I can hope for is that Ufotable can pry the rights to HF from Studio DEEN's hands, or even if it is just wishful thinking give Fate and UBW justice.

True enough, but I thought he would harbor some kind of rage after being killed by Kiritsugu. At least to get some revenge...

I'm trying to forget Naked Gil...what they were thinking at ufotable?!

Yeah, Sakura's scene was quite sad. She already become the "evil" girl we all know from the Fate Stay Night route. Luckily she does get saved in the end...

Heaven's feel from Ufotable? Maybe as a movie? I would totally buy that!

Better yet a series of OVAs like KnK, I think they could do it nicely enough with another tv series but that would distinguish it from DEEN's travesty and give them as much time as they need show and make it. Also on a side note that probably wasn't meant to be taken this way, the cover of the script for this episode had something along the lines of "to be continue, for Next Generation Children" with a picture of Shirou, Rin, Sakura, and Ilya. I couldn't help but take notice of it.

Blame Urobuchi for that, Ufotable only gave him a nice blanket/rag to cover himself. And to be fair Kirei was prepared to fight him again but when he looked closer and realised he was already a walking corpse he let it go, let alone causing the fire had destroyed him so he didn't have to. I'm wondering more about what happened next though. Sure Kirei suggested that he would also be travelling a lot, and Kiritsugu is incapable both physically and mentally, but five years in the same city is still a long time, just what would have happened if they ran into each other in that time?

Ginnodangan | 82 Comments - starstarstar | Reply

Well, KnK was a movie series more than an OVA to be honest giving the length of each "episode". Yeah, the feeling was exactly that, but I wonder if they have the will to take such risk and try to produce another series that may not sell well.

In those five years, they maybe met and shared an hot milk at a near cafè together with Gil? No, ok that would've been impossible...

Either that or there was one really awkward meeting at the grocery store or something. Great, now I'm stuck imagining all the random shinanigans that took place between this and Stay Night, I can easily imagine Gil having to babysit Rin or what he did in Carnival Phantasm being true to name a few.

Especially when Saber, the cash cow of the franchise, will be taken out in the first few episodes. I don't think the popularity of the other characters could compensate for her own. Either way though I think it would have the potential to sell well, KnK sold at least 50,000 each and the first BD box for Zero sold at least 40,000 copies, so I can see an HF adaptation doing just as well.

Ahahah, Gil babysitting Rin would be an awesome sight indeed man. They both are quite self-centered so I'm sure they will end up fighting.

Yeah, that's the main problem, a Fate based series without much Saber is hard to adapt without fan problems...

well If they manage even 20K copies it would be more than enough to gain tons of money...

Pretty much, though it wouldn't be the same I'm almost reminded of that one doujin that had her summon him instead. Alternatively, had Gil used his youth potion in those ten years?

Spoiler: Show
Not to mention that they would only twist the knife by well, quite literally putting a knife in her chest. I can only imagine how Saberfags would flip their shit over it. They could have her survive and be in the True Ending but it just wouldn't be the same, probably worse than UBW Good.

20k is usually just breaking even but then there's the potential for figures and such, which now that I think about it HF sadly doesn't have much for. GSC has already played their Saber Alter card.

Was I the only one laughing hard at the "naked Gilgamesh" scene at the end? What they were trying to do with that? Fanservice for the ladies?!

I certainly laughed because that was exactly the way I imagined it in the novel. Well, it does make sense that he is naked and ufotable again shows that they are mostly following the novel.

A very cool scene is missing that makes me like and hate Gil more. While the Grail mud seemed to consume Gil, his unbelievable ego, selfishness and arrogance resisted the curse and he "forgave" Angra Mainyu. Angra Mainyu made the mistake to accept an existence inside the Grail, "the King". I remember something he told Saber in Fate when she suspected that he became insane when he was showered by the Grail mud.

"Do not take me so lowly. How can I be a hero if I cannot swallow a curse such as this? All evils of the world? Heh, bring at least three times as much as that if you want to stain me. See, Saber. A hero is someone who carries with them everything they see.

I am already carrying everything in this world."

Pretty badass...
And yes, Gil is half-Servant now. He has a real body and no longer needs a Master as an anchor to remain in the world, but he needs to get a mana source to use his Noble Phantasm and we all know how he got it...

I wonder how his child (Caren Ortensia) feel about her late father. I don't remember much from the visual novel Fate Hollow Ataraxia as I played it too much time ago...

I don't think F/HA directly stated that she is his daughter, so to even find a few passages is extremely difficult(considering the fact how often one dies when one sees her...). But who knows, it's not like I completely played the game... Oh, btw, have you seen this?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBsXNOaS5M4

It's a shame they didn't show young Taiga and how she got to know Kiritsugu (or the simple fact that she resembled Shirley). It was one of the parts I was more looking forward to...

Yeah, as above stated, she makes a short cameo-appearance. As I said a few weeks ago, watch the Einzbern Consultation Rooms that were included in the blurays. Perhaps it's no longer interesting because you already know the Grail and Servant mechanics, but T-chan and Instructor Iri are really funny. It certainly reminds me of the Tiger Dojo.

And I feel bad for Kiritsugu. I saw a few people asking what later happened with Kiritsugu after the ending scene. Hm, how exactly could they show that he died? And ufotable didn't make clear that Angra Mainyu's curse sealed his magecraft(that's why he couldn't come to Ilya) and slowly destroyed his body.

Other than that, I am displeased to see Kariya's death scene. I don't really know what to say, ufotable did not portray it the way I imagined it. Sakura was certainly confused why he came back and that she then realizes that this is probably a lesson Zouken wanted to teach her. Well, in both adaptation and novel she shows that she is pretty much broken, but the Sakura hate is risinng up again and some Kariya fans are now starting to hate Sakura, too(yes, I read too much /a/
). Poor thing...

Oh, and did you know what happened with Waver later? He becomes a badass, that's for certain. ^_^

That's a nice quote that defines the personality of the strongest hero of all times. I remember that in the Heaven's feel route, he gets rejected by Dark Sakura because absorbing him was too dangerous for her or something similar.

Ahahahah, that ending video scene is golden. Whoever created it made a wonderful job changing all the faces to resemble Kirei, her wife and Caren. It makes me want to play Ataraxia again...

I watched a couple of them, but I need to get all of them at once. Yes, it feels like Ciel-Sensei and the Tiger Dojo combined. *_*

Sakura was a bit hateful in the original Fate Stay Night to be honest. Regardless of her past, her own personality was the less interesting between the three heroines (Rin is the perfect heroine *_*). Can't really like her as much as Saber or Rin...

Ah, well... I can only pity Sakura. It's a bit strange that Rin seems to be happy in Fate and UBW after the war, although it's actually stated that both of them can only be truly happy if they are reunited again.

But Rin is definitely my favorite heroine out of the three. Would have shared the first place with Ilya if her route wasn't scrapped... (that's why I'll enjoy Prisma Illya so much... Luvia, Rin, Ilya, Iri,  OMG O.O)

She is extremely strong and iirc Kirei was a bit frustrated that she didn't show too much emotion during her father's funeral and because of the fact that in only one year she lost her family. Rin has great willpower, but I can completely understand why she let out her emotions when Kirei gave her the Azoth dagger. The irony in all of this is so delicious.

Nah, your memory is failing you.

Rin heard in UBW that Shinji is treating Sakura better now, but that hardly is a happy end because the Grail Wars haven't ended yet and Zouken is still alive. Yet Rin goes with Shirou, Sakura's last emotional support to London. The only end in which we see her truly happy is HF True End.

Btw, I think FZ's score could get another 100-200 points with the bluray release. Part 1 was a whole lot better and I expect the same for part 2.

And btw, all endings, even the bad ones are considered canon by Word of God Nasu because there are multiple universes. Archer is after all from a different universe and timeline and Kara no Kyoukai plays in a different universe, unlike Tsukihime and FSN.

Gilgamesh is quite the metrosexual, what was he thinking sitting there nude like a greek god XD

First season was more interesting for me to be honest, I was more thrilled by the story and the characters there. Gil was naked because of the black mud. In fact, they totally skipped the scene in which he gained his body so it seems kinda random here. Probably in the Blu-rays though.

Kirei's pleasure comes from destroying other people's hopes and his objective after the conversation with Iri was to crush Kiritsugu's ideal. An empty man who's dead inside is definitely not an exciting enemy.

I actually thought Kirei would smile more noticeably than that... Anyway, it was such a despicable action... I can't help but hate him for all this.

Yep, Caren Ortensia that is strongly implied to be Kirei's daughter.

By the way, since we're at it. Is Hollow Ataraxia fully translated? I've seen a patch around, but it is said to be only 52% complete.

I really don't know to be honest, I heard there was a translation project, but I just played it out in original Japanese...

I'm more than satisfied with the ending. Everything seems to have properly ended and I don't feel like I'm left wanting more, but if there's another Fate series, I won't complain if they animate it.

Yep, there is already and is about to be animated. It's a spinoff with Ilya as protagonist, with Iris, Kiritsugu and all the others still alive.
Some sort of lighthearted story I'm looking forward to...*_*

A little late to the party but...that was an awesome ending right there.
"Fanservice for the ladies?! " - the reckoning is upon us my friends, brace yourselves

Kirei didn't deem Kiritsugu an equal anymore when he saw him rummaging through the ruin. Man, and how sad was that scene (alongside Ilya's narration too)? The only thing sadder was the other tied-up loose ends - Sakura's descent to corruption and "broken" Aoi >.<

I never did think that Taiga and Shirley looked alike. I guess they kinda do huh. Still pick Shirley though :3

Oh, and was I the only one waiting for Kiritsugu to say "I'm a magus"?

We need normal fanservice! Preferably of Saber!

yeah, that's likely the reason. Kiritsugu looked like a random old man just gone crazy. It's sad that such a powerful magus ended up that way...

Same thoughts here, Shirley will always win in my heart. She was such a cute girl...

I was waiting for that too!

I think Kirei's reason for letting Kiritsugu go is the same reason why Caster let that boy go in the second episode. For Kirei, there's no joy in killing a man that's already dead inside. If Kiritsugu still had some will in him, I'm sure Kirei would've fought him.

Well, yes, I suppose that's the best way to think about it. Kiritsugu was already dead at that point rummaging through ruins like a crazy guy...

It seems I'm the only one who was grinning side to side watching Kirei and Gilgamesh. Pretty sad since it's more one-sided than the L vs Kira and Code Geass being over-rated debate.

Ahahah, yes, it seems we were all fooled away by ufotable deciding to show a Naked Gilgamesh straight in TV.

No no. What I meant was that I couldn't help grinning watching those two, even when they were executing malicious plots. runz away

As for naked Gilgamesh, I've read the light novel beforehand so I was expecting that. But it came out weird and forced. shivers

As much as I'm a fan of Type-Moon thus making me enjoying Fate/Zero easy-as-pie, I can't say Ufotable did so great a job as everyone has been saying.

The animation looks gorgeous yes but they did not conveyed some of the character's emotions properly. Ufotable was so dead-pan in making them look professional and cold-blooded, Kiritsugu and Kirei looked like they were having constipation when thinking and mind-boggling, sometimes even hilarious when they had mental breakdowns. Especially Kiritsugu after blowing what-was-her-name-again? out of the sky, with the bulging eyeballs and what-not.

Not to mention some of my most anticipated action scenes from reading the light novel, Berserker vs. Gilgamesh with fighter jets and UFO(lol I know it's not) and Rider vs. Saber on chariot and bike being reduced to fancy light-trails. The only battle between Kiritsugu and Kirei blew me away though. That was some awe-inspiring choreography.

Tt did wrapped up pretty nicely as well.

Yes, I did not read the light novel and I was like "WTF?!" when Gil appeared in that attire.

I'm not sure about the differences, but judging merely from comparison between this adaptation and Studio Deen adaptation of the original Fate Stay Night...well I think ufotable still has made a nice job!

Well, I did like pretty much all the battles, but without a comparison...I can't really judge.

So this is a sad ending for Saber, i feel bad seeing her at the late part of this episode..

I just wonder why she didn't learn her lesson in the Fate Stay Night series, she still wants to win the grail to change her kingdom's destiny? or maybe i'm wrong..

yep, quite a sad raging end.

Well, she lose will to pursue it after knowing the truth behind the grail in Fate Stay Night.

Should I watch this first then play fate/stay night visual novel or vice versa? I'd like to know your opinion on that, thanks!

You can do either to be honest, this prequel doesn't have big connections with the story of Fate Stay Night. Watching this directly would only make you lose 1-2 random cameo appearances...

Watching FZ first takes the element of surprise a bit away from the last route, and that already happens in the very first episode. Generally I'd recommend to play FSN first. You are also definitely missing some other references in FZ otherwise (which I enjoyed a lot
) and explanations are partially missing, since it is expected of you to already having read FSN.
