Fate Zero - Saber's troubled face after Kiritsugu's order? Priceless!

by feal8716. June 2012 23:59

Hello,

Today we'll talk about the 24th episode (11th of the second season) of the anime series named Fate Zero that completed most of the battles and is now about to complete the last minutes of the fourth grail war.

One of the most interesting part of this episode was the suggestive scene showing us how the Grail would've granted Kiritsugu's wish. It isn't completely clear, but I think they wanted to imply that the only way to save the world (using that cursed item) was to "kill all humanity".

This is because, for some reason, the Grail would've worked as a magnifier of Kiritsugu's original way of "saving the world" (sacrifice the least number of people to save the majority) that he used in the last years.

FateZero

This episode also featured a couple of battles; the most exciting one was Kirei vs Kiritsugu. It was extremely entertaining to see how both relied heavily on their "broken" artifacts in order to win.

From one side we have Kiritsugu and Avalon's unlimited regeneration capabilities (managed to restore his destroyed heart in mere seconds). From the other side we have Kirei using the extra command spells he owns to deflect Kiritsugu's special bullets.

It's a shame that the grail decided to interrupt their battle all of a sudden. I would've loved to see who was going to get the final victory in that bloody deathmatch.

As you can see in this scene we see a completely "broken" Saber being ordered to destroy the Grail (using two command spells to force her to use Excalibur). For once, I was cheering for Kiritsugu because he's finally doing the right thing by destroying such corrupted artifact.

We also now finally understand the reason for the hate Saber had for Kiritsugu in the original Fate Stay Night. Being ordered to destroy the item that could save your fate must have been very hard on her.

FateZero

Next episode will show us Saber facing Gilgamesh in a final battle to destroy the grail just as ordered by Kiritsugu. Gilgamesh will end up becoming "human" again due to the corruption of the grail (that is the reason for him being still alive in the fifth war as well)

Hopefully they'll have enough time to cover all the rest of the events of the fourth war aftermath like Kirei surviving the war, Rin ending up becoming Kirei's disciple, Shirou ending up in Kiritsugu's home, etc...

I think it would be awesome if they show us a small final scene with Rin, Sakura and Shirou in child version living their life peacefully years before the fifth war kicks in...

FateZero

Concluding, Fate Zero is still one of the best series aired in the last couple of years and if they manage to bring enough closure with the ending I'm sure it'll become one of the top 10 series of all time in my rankings.

See you soon,

They completaly screwed up the Kiritsugu vs Kirei battle

The Drama CD had even the Kiritsugu's version of the Emiya theme, that was wonderful. And the Saber vs Berserker ending was away more dramatic and would make Saber more determinant in winning the Grail. At 7:00 all the battles were over.

Overall, that was a good episode, but far from the ideal.

Same here, the fight between Kiritsugu and Kirei was way too badass to be interupted like that.

It's a bit sad to realize that next week will be the last episode. Hopefully some of the summer anime will be good enough to fill the hole.

Since you haven't mentioned it, I guess you've fainted at that alternative wish scene XD Where he declined his lovely little family in such a sick disturbing way. It was unnecessary to show it that drastic, I can't stand violence against children, well good it wasn't for real.

But I think it was right to destroy the Grail if it can't even grant the miracle he had wished for. On the other hand he could have wished for something different.

Funny that the battles of Kiritsugu were always better than the servant battles, especially in this second season they were just too short for my tastes. The Berserker vs Saber fight was so underwhelming.

Yeah, Saber vs Berserker was underwhelming. Especially because Saber simply didn't react to Lancelot's attacks. Her broken face was a bit too much to bear.

As I watched that scene my second thought was "poor feal, will he be allright?" Let's forget about this sad illusion, it never happened =)

At the end I started to cheer for Gilgamesh again, like in the beginning of Fate/Zero. Im angry at Saber that she couldn't protect her Master and I don't like Kiritsugu anymore :p

I think they were kinda forced to trim down, or at least skip on explaining what was happening in Kitusugu's (epic) fight with Kirei - with things like Avalon helping Kiritsugu reach Time Alter - Square Accel without breaking all the bones in his body, or how complicated a move it was for Kirei to deflect one of Kiritsugu's origin bullets. Still my new favorite anime showdown though

Another interesting episode. And although I can't judge it completely yet because ufotable obviously cut lots of scenes and made changes, I can already see that regarding the sound, the sound drama(what a surprise, lol) was superior. I can't listen to "battle to the strong" anymore, "Emiya" would have been perfect. Or "All the evils of the world" when Angra Mainyu was talking to Kiritsugu.

Spoiler: Show
Sound Drama examples: Kirei vs Kiritsugu http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6aPk8BHwf0 or Berserker's final words to Saber http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thMkY1B44NM

Other than that, minor detail changes were made and I don't really wanna start bitching now, but why wasn't the whole building on fire already? Why did they make it look like Berserker resented Saber until the end(I know - or better I hope they will add Lancelot's flashbacks and the reason for becoming a Berserker)? Where was the short scene in which Saber looked like Saber Alter for the tiniest moment? Why the fuck wasn't Kirei able to block the origin bullet with his bare reinforced hands? And during the whole fight Kiri didn't understand how exactly Kirei could do that, but I guess they needed someone who can explain it. *sigh*

I know, I know, visual adaptations can never completely satisfy novel readers. ^_^ Anyway, I'm looking forward to the bluray release, Prisma Ilya anime and the final scene under the moonlight, in which Shirou inherits Kerry's dreams and ideals and Kiritsugu dies in peace because of the curse.
Fuck Angra Mainyu(not the boy Avenger, just the fact he became pure evil).

I'm listening now to the sound drama of the battle between Kirei and Kiritsugu. It's simply awesome, I'll have to go and listen to all of it again step by step till the very end...*__*

Well, all the points you make are true, but as you also said novels are difficult to adapt properly in anime format and keep them interesting. Especially the ones like Fate Zero filled with textual content in every single part...

Looking forward to Prisma Ilya too, it's going to be awesome! Ilya and Iris HAPPY! *__*

Kind of a let down to see how much was cut from this episode, more glaringly Berserker's death and the impact it has on Saber (Lancelot notes on the irony of dying at his king's side, and his death provides Saber with the resolve to grit her teeth and keep going), but with the limited airing time I guess it couldn't have been helped. Hopefully the BD version will fix it, hopefully.

Moving on, how this episode confronted Kiritsugu on the longstanding flaws and put them and his ideal into perspective for him was nicely done. There was just something unsettling about seeing him revisit all the places he had been, and all the while he was continually pressured on the lengths he would take to pursue his ideal until he broke. And following that seeing him command Saber to destroy the grail was great, it would have taken only one sentence to clear it up but to Saber it would have been an absolute stab in the back, more so considering why she kept on going and how close she was to victory.

Also don't get your hopes up for an epic battle between Saber and Gil, the next episode will likely be strictly epilogue stuff. Hopefully some more details for Illya's spinoff will be released soon as well.

Not sure if they'll actually fix it, but I'm at the moment listening to all the drama cd to try and gain extra insights on what happened in the original novel. The sound drama is quite an high quality one...

That final scene was really awesome with that awesome troubled expression from Saber being ordered to destroy the item that could "save" her destiny. They really need to improve their communication skills...

I expected the battle to last very little given the command spell used by Kiritsugu (that will force Excalibur to be used immediately), so well don't worry.

Probably not all of it but there's a few things that are just too abrupt for them not too, like the split second glimpse of Saber clutching her sword before it jumps back to Kiritsugu's side of things. And yeah, the sound dramas are great, I'm actually a little disappointed that some of their tracks weren't implemented as well.

More so when you consider just how determined she was, after seeing what had happened to Lancelot she wondered how many others had bore a similar fate because of her (Gawain and Galahad, though the former blamed himself more than anyone), there was no other way around it, she had to obtain the grail. And so to her Kiritsugu's appearance (well more his Command Seals) represented just that, a chance to break the stalemate and seize it, then he gives her that order. Considering all that build up her split second expression of despair is simply glorious.

Spoiler: Show
Pretty much, they could even skipped past it entirely as there's still quite a lot to go that isn't related to Kiritsugu finding Shirou. Like Gil digging Kotomine out of the rubble, and one particularly bittersweet scene with Waver regarding one of Rider's purchases. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it was as trimmed down as this episode either or even if they cut some of the most heartbreaking aspects of Kiritsugu's actions after the war.

Anime is a different medium and its hard to connect the two things in a good way. Especially with the lack of "narrator" in the anime compared to the sound drama.

Well, if only Kiritsugu told her of the real nature of the grail maybe...
That's, of course, only speculation. We don't know what could've changed with this simple change...

True, you can't expect an adaptation to go into nearly as much detail either. Text just offers so much freedom as opposed to visual media. You can both draw attention to certain things or even better explain them in detail and what the characters are going through. However this episode didn't have enough time to attempt to convey such, we could understand what Kiritsugu was going through but not Saber.

That's something I'm still wondering about myself, though I now don't think she would have taken such a claim unconditionally or even that Kiritsugu was in the state to tell her, everything he based his life around had just been shattered. Alternatively it also would have given Gil the second he needed click his fingers and get rid of the interruption, so it's probably for the best that the didn't.

Ginnodangan | 82 Comments - starstarstar | Reply

Yes, you have bigger freedom and less time restrictions. Every anime second cost the animation company a lot of money so they have to be very careful about what to animate.

True enough, Gilgamesh could've killed Kiritsugu very easily so he just choose the "more efficient" way to destroy the grail. As usual Kiritsugu is all about efficiency I see...

My interpretation of the Grail scene wasn't so much that the Grail had an ulterior motive or whatever to show Kiritsugu that stuff. It wasn't trying to imply anything. It was simply telling him that if he wants a wish granted, then he has to know what he wants. He can't just tell the Grail "find a way to make the world better." He has to say "make the world better by doing this." It shows that Grail itself isn't like a human. It can't just take a request and grant it in the best way possible. It's truly an inanimate object that follows the orders of the user.

Well, we know from the Fate Stay Night series that the grail is corrupted after the third war events (the summoning of avenger) and want pain and suffering of humanity so well, while your idea is interesting I doubt its the true one.

It's a shame that the grail decided to interrupt their battle all of a sudden. I would've loved to see who was going to get the final victory in that bloody deathmatch. They were both gonna die. Kirei would smash Kiritsugu's brain and be shot in the process. So thank the Grail for interrupting.

I was a bit disappointed with this episode, to be honest. The Kirei vs Kiritsugu battle was really good (even though I liked the novel version better), and what happened inside the Grail was quite well adapted too but... Saber vs Berserker were mostly cut and didn't manage to convey the character emotions well enough. The Command Seals thing could also have been way better. I still enjoyed it though, but it was helplessly rushed.

I think it would be awesome if they show us a small final scene with Rin, Sakura and Shirou in child version living their life peacefully years before the fifth war kicks in...You're too optimistic man... Too optimistic...

I thought Kiritsugu would make sure Kirie was dead. I think even he couldn't survive being cut up into several pieces. I don't know, I'm pretty sure Shirou almost died because Kirie touched the grail or something like that. Gilgamesh should sense his master's death, but has yet to make a comment. He probably doesn't care.

It'd make sense for either Gilgamesh or Kirie to save the grail. Until next episode...

Emiya Shirou will be making an appearance for sure and I can guess Rin too because she got a special non-canon episode all for herself and the crowd loves her. Sakura? Who knows.

I don't expect much from Saber Vs Gilgamesh because Excalibur would just destroy everything in one blow but Grail-kun would still be at large and wreak unnecessary havoc.

I definitely am not happy with the rushed second-last episode but I will forgive ufotable because overall, they have done a mighty job well done in this adaptation and next episode would be pretty saddening for not seeing another installment of this awesome franchise.

Rin is loved by everyone because she's...simply PERFECT!

Not sure, in Fate Stay Night Gilgamesh was able to fight equally against Excalibur, but I suppose he didn't use Ea on Earth in Fate Zero...

Yes, ufotable has done a good job overally, but I still think that they could've made the first season animation look better. Some of the episodes were awful to watch. I hope the Blu ray did fix this problem.
