Fate Zero - Gilgamesh is overpowered! Saber, what are you doing?

by feal879. June 2012 23:58

Hello,

Today we'll talk about the 23th episode (10th of the second season) of the anime series named Fate Zero that killed off another servant and is approaching at high speed the final story arc.

I extremely liked the "battle" between Rider and Gilgamesh, especially for the great personality and courage shown by Rider even when facing certain death. He simply charged right against Gilgamesh showing his "disciple" how life should be lived!

Gilgamesh was also extremely serious for once and even decided to spare Waver out of respect for Rider's courage. It was a touching scene watching Waver gaze the King of Heroes right into the eyes like his old "master".

FateZero

Saber's battle on the other side was a bit strange, especially because it seems that Saber lost the will to fight as soon as she recognized the identity of the enemy.

Yes, the enemy is the famous Lancelot of the Lake, one of Arthur's most trusted knights and the protagonist of the most popular story revolving around Arthur.

Ufotable is doing an awesome job with all the animations in here, especially the ones in the battle between Saber and Berserker. Watching Saber use a truck to defend herself from Berserker's attacks was simply outstanding!

This is the real full-power of the most powerful noble phantasm owned by Gilgamesh and the most powerful noble phantasm ever shown in the whole Fate franchise. Yes, even more than the already overpowered Excalibur that we already know about.

Being an anti-world weapon, Ea cannot be used on Earth otherwise it would provoke the immediate reaction of several counter guardians trying to stop Gilgamesh from "killing" the world. Using it in a reality marble is totally fine though, being a separate bounded field.

It's sad that he didn't got to use it against Shirou while inside the Unlimited Blade Works reality marble. I mean, the difference in raw power between Shirou and Gilgamesh is ABSOLUTE, the first simply couldn't have won. That's what you call "plot armor" right?

FateZero

Next episode will feature the conclusion of the battle between Berserker and Saber (well, we all know that the latter will win) and the beginning of the battle between Kiritsugu and Kirei.

Judging from the voices in the episode preview, Iris will be featured and will somehow talk to Kiritsugu. It'll likely be a warning needed to make Kiritsugu understand the true nature of Fuyuki's Grail.

I really wonder what will happen as soon as the two arch-enemies will clash with their skills. Kirei is an expert executor and I don't think he'll be defeated that easily...

FateZero

Concluding, Fate Zero is now entering the final climax arc with only three battles remaining before the end of the war. I'm extremely excited and looking forward to cover next week's episode.

See you soon,

Finally we got to see Ea in some serious action.

Personally I would have been surprised if Saber didn't hesitate after finding out who Berserker really is. Lancelot didn't go insane until after Arthur's death if my memory serves me right. So seeing her most loyal knight in that state should by all means shock her to at least that extent.

Ea is simply a broken item. How can you even face such a weapon in a fair fight?!

Well, point taken, but still I hope she'll recover and be able to fight again. I mean, she needs to "save him" from that pitiful fate right?

No comment about the manliness of Waver?!

Trickery or playing off Gilgamesh's arrogance? Now why does that sound familiar?

That's probably what's gonna happen, we might also get some kind of emotional scene that will solidify her resolve to get the grail. Heracles got his senses back before he died so why shouldn't Lancelot?

Oh I have plenty but I doubt they would do him justice. Waver really went through some serious growth through the show.

Well, Shirou admittedly had one of the biggest plot armor ever conceived in history. Because let's be honest, even with Tohsaka's mana he shouldn't be able to fight one-by-one against Gilgamesh...

Yeah, that's the most likely outcome. A sad departing as soon as Lancelot get defeated.

He's the guy who got the most growth out of the main characters after all!

Loli Saber ♥

Is it the armour that makes Lancelot insane or is it because of something else? Some back story is necessary. Losing his helmet wasn't the best idea since her sword couldn't even scratch his armour.

Waver was useless to the very end, but still managed to find his way into a king's heart. He had one of the strongest servents, but Gilgamesh is insanely overpowered.

She's love, isn't she?!

The Berserker class is made exactly to be insane in exchange for better parameters. The heroes who are invited in the war are "bound" to a particular class to simplify their otherwise too complex evocation. (too much mana needed to summon and retain a full hero without a class system)

Gilgamesh's weapons are simply broken. So overpowered...>_<

So he would possibly have slightly different abilities and mindset if he was summoned under another class. Makes me wonder what the other servants would be like if they were summoned differently. Though Someone like Caster, I can only imagine him in that class.

yes, obviously each hero has a limited number of classes they can be summoned into. Lancelot, for example, could have been a Saber...
yes, the story would've deeply changed with different evocations...

I'll try to explain from what I know, simply put Lancelot's state is a result of the affair he had with Guinevere, to the public Saber's Queen. Arturia herself didn't care about it but when the matter was dragged into the spotlight she was forced to do something about it, and reluctantly sentence her to death. And of course in an attempt to save her Lancelot went berserk when he found out about this and killed several of his fellow knights, two of which were Gawain's brothers, in his path.

Due to the effects that this had Lancelot's now left in a conflicted state, he wants to die but as a result of the Christian influences in the original story he could not willingly seek death. So even when Gawain comes along to avenge his brothers he ends up beating the crap out of him, while the whole pursuit of him provided the chance for Mordred to stage his rebellion.

So yeah, being Lancelot is suffering, not sure if this stuff will be covered in the next episode but it would make for an amazing flashback.

I remember part of this story (of the original Arthur) from my childhood, but thanks for refreshing my mind.
Still, I do think that Lancelot could have been summoned as Saber if the summoner wanted, that would've changed deeply the power and skills of this knight though. I'm curious about how powerful would've been a Lancelot retaining his sanity...

Well, Lancer still has the crown in terms of "suffering", but I agree...

one of the main complaint i have about the nasuverse is just how there is always
a bunch of characters with overpowered abilities I mean this really make the outcome of most battle quiet predictable

yeah, mostly Gilgamesh, Arcueid, Shiki (Kara no Kyoukai) are simply impossible to defeat in a fair fight. Well, that's one of the charm of these series maybe?

I didn't think I'd be saying this, but Gil was pretty awesome. I just had to rewatch him unlock Ea for 4-5 times before proceeding >.<
(and lol, he would've pwned Shirou in their fight had he not been so angry)

The reveal of Berserker's identity really hit Saber hard, but I guess that's understandable. Too bad Gil and Lancelot never had their final match.

I can't wait for Kiritsugu vs Kirei!

Yes, Shirou had 0 chances against Ea in a bounded field, he would've simply broken Shirou's reality marble very easily, but well...PLOT ARMOR.

Well Lancelot must be defeated by Arturia, otherwise the whole backstory wouldn't make much sense...

In Gil's defense, he was also subject to plot induced stupidity, but yeah, plot armor = strongest armor EVER

I think the best hero to defeat Gil is another Gil! I mean, if he uses Ea nobody can survive the impact. Only Saber with Avalon could resist the "powered down" version of Ea (because he can't use it full power on Earth)

After mainly playing the arrogant and evil villain in season 2 I was surprised that Gilgamesh treated Rider with some respect, like Goldie had a little honor.

Saber is so messed up in F/zero, sure it gives her character more depth, but it's somehow hard to like her when she has so many weak points, just kill the wild Lancelot, he can't even talk in his mad state.

I could just unbelievingly watch how weak Rider was in comparison, not even a scratch 0_0. Either Rider was weak from the beginning (like in FSN XD) or Gilgamesh is even more overpowered than already expected. I hate it if the characters I like get owned like this
I actually thought Waver would be killed as well, but Goldie apparently had its good day.

It appeared like Kirei hold a funreal for Iri if I wasn't mistaken.

Gilgamesh in the fourth war is a lot less childish than the one in the fifth war and there is a very good reason for it.

Well, that's how she became so wary of her master in the fifth war...

It's not Rider to be weak, it's just that Ea is a broken weapon that nobody can match in a fair fight. We're talking about an ANTI-WORLD weapon capable of distorting reality and forcing the planet Earth to counter-react if used at full power on Earth.

Mhn...looked more like a ritual to be honest...

Judging by the preview, it's not simply the beginning of Kiritsugu vs Kirei's battle that will be shown.

Anyway, I thought that Saber's loss of her will to fight wasn't as well portrayed here as it could have been, so I'm happy to know that a non-novel reader grasped it (it means the message went through).

Gilgamesh is the most overpowered bastard in the general story of entertainment. I cannot recall any movie or series (anime or not) with a more overpowered character. Anyway, it's still remarkable how he defeated Rider without moving an inch from where he stood.
It was a nice comparison you made with Shirou. In fact, if something can reach the epic proportion of Gilgamesh's overpowerfulness, it is Shirou's plot armor xD

...
Oh, Iris...

Well, we'll be able to see what happened to Iris as well judging from the preview.

Yes the face of Saber and her lack of response to Berserker's attack at the end were the main things that let me understand her lack of will to fight.

Shirou's plot armor is something wonderful, if you read the visual novel you could see him thinking "if I trace more weapons I'll die" and after three lines he summon other 10 high level weapons and is still perfectly fine. I was like "What?!"

Iris...

I honestly have to laugh at anyone who says that Shirou is stronger than Gil, this episode alone showed just how close he was to annihilation. Ea quite literally destroyed the Ionian Hetairoi and if it were used on UBW I can see the effects being permanent.

And yeah, the battle between Rider and Gil was incredible, the effects Ea had on the Ionian Hetairoi were a little underwhelming (I was expecting to see it tear through his army) but Rider's last stand was great. Seeing him charge the Gate of Babylon seemed to embody Alexander the Great's entire journey, mindlessly running forward one step at a time without looking back even as his friends fell along the way. It was a death that befit him. Other than that what Waver went through was great as well, if he had faltered for one instant he would have been killed without a second thought.

I'm curious about the next episode as well, from the preview it sounds like the next episode will cover quite a bit.

Agreed, UBW was probably as shonenesque as Stay Night got and the fight with Gil was where it reached its climax.

May as well merge both replies for ease of reading. On Lancelot being summoned as Saber, it would probably just cause him to lose the Mad Enhancement bonus (C) and even so Arondight bumps up all his parameters anyway. So basically we're left with a self pitying Saber in exchange for the risk of bleeding the Master dry that Bersekers always have, I'm not sure whether that's good or bad.

If I remember right he didn't even notice when Bucephalus had fallen, he only wondered how far his old friend had taken him when he realised that he was running on his feet. That too seemed to say a lot.

Spoiler: Show
More or less how much the next episode has to cover, Saber's still got to settle things with Berserker, Kiritsugu and Kirei still have to fight it out, and then Kiritsugu has to reject the grail and double command seal Saber to destroy it. Then there's all the epilogue stuff for everyone, so there's quite a bit of stuff.

Of course that's ignoring Shinji because he's on another level...

Yeah, not sure either...but I suppose we'll never know because Arturia can only be summoned as Saber and nobody will take her role as main heroine...

Shirou isn't that bad in Fate or UBW, he's insufferable in the former but you warm up to him once you start to understand him. The latter route just gets too much hype however in my opinion.

Shinji on the other hand is someone not to be hated but pitied, he's pretty messed up after all the crap that Zouken put him through.

There are other Saber class Servants in Extra though, Nero is another matter entirely but Gawain's parameters are still pretty solid. All As and Bs, Numeral of the Saints can boost his strength three fold, and the Galatine is the heat to Excalibur's light. Also Arturia wasn't summoned at all until Zero.

Fate Shirou is too focused on protecting Saber that he forgets about the fact that Saber is far more powerful than him. In UBW he is too focused on his ideal...
Heaven's feel is the better!

Well, I did hate him because of his selfish personality. Zouken or not, that's him!

But even so they both still have their merits, undeniably HF-Shirou is best Shirou, but Fate-Shirou makes sense when you realise how broken he is and UBW-Shirou resolution is something as well. Though whether he'll stand by it is another matter.

To be honest so did I at first but when I considered his circumstances it became more pity than anything else. The Makiri were once a proud Magus family, and now possessing no Magic Circuits at all Shinji sees himself as a failure to such. With Zouken rubbing it in and Shirou unintentionally making him constantly aware of it, his arrogance/selfishness is an attempt to cover it up. That said you're free to hate Extra-Shinji, an idiot with no redeeming features who failed to realise the basic risks in what he was doing.

CCC proves otherwise, Extra's workings are a little different but it still counts as something Fate-related, and even then I wouldn't be surprised if they get derailed by another Fate project along the way. It's what sells.

Well, while I understand your point when you talk of "pitifulness" of Shinji's position, but I can't condone his actions. He could've leaved the war after Rider's defeat (in UBW route for example), but instead made everything in order to create sufference around him.

Let's keep hope then!

Ea really is the most powerful noble phantasm ever known in the Fate universe. At the same time, I think Avalon is probably the most powerful noble phantasm as well. Yes I know that's a contradiction but one is anti-world and the other is absolute defense.
