Fate Zero - Just what do you think you're doing Kotomine Kirei?

by feal872. June 2012 23:33

Hello,

Today we'll talk about the 21th episode (8th of the second season) of the anime series Fate Zero that shocks us with one of the most terrifying anime scene of the last years.

Yes, Kotomine killing Iris was really hard to bear after so many episodes of development for that girl. Now she seems to be trapped within the accursed grail with no way to escape back to reality.

I only hope the Grail won't corrupt her soul leaving her enough reason to try and contact Kiritsugu for a final love message...

FateZero

This episode didn't use any special animation like last time, but focused on a more "development" focused approach explaining and resolving the last remaining plot threads. This will likely be the last episode this way as the real war begins starting from the next episode.

When Iris explained Kiritsugu's real goal I felt pity for the man who Kiritsugu ended up becoming. While I despise Kirei, I have to agree with him that Kiritsugu's objective is totally fucked up.

"World peace"?! Are we serious? Not even childrens nowadays thinks about such a "unrealistic" objectives. Just pick Iris and run away using your magus knowledge...>_<

Ok, this was a rather cool way for Waver Velvet to end his war. He aknowledge how useless he is in battle and end up riding in battle with Rider as a "friend" instead of a Master.

It was one of the most cool scene of this episode and I really want to see how Waver's personality will grow up after this war just as I'm interested in the final battle between Gilgamesh and Rider.

Judging from what Gilgamesh said to Kotomine, we're going to experience a "full-powered" Gilgamesh, that implies he's going to use his main weapon Ea as well.

FateZero

Obviously he can't use it at 100% while on Earth as it would cause too much damage (it's an anti-world class weapon after all) and probably he wouldn't have enough mana anyway.

Next episode will likely be entirely focused around Gilgamesh vs Rider and Saber vs Berserker battle leaving the Kiritsugu vs Kotomine for the last episode climax.

I'm quite excited to think about what great animated battles awaits us, but at the same time a bit sad to know that this series is inevitably coming to an end...

FateZero

Concluding, Fate Zero is right near the end with the four most exciting battles (all the remaining ones) just some weeks away from us.

I'm extremely looking forward to watch and cover the future episodes as well.

See you soon,

Hmmm...I thought it's 22nd episode (9th of the 2nd season). Did I mess up the number or something?

Well, I'm looking forward to those battles you mentioned. It'll be really engaging and exciting (I hope).

We all knew it was coming..but having too see Iri get choked to death was just.. >_<
(and they even showed little Ilya T_T)

But, in return we're gonna have the most epic of battles leading up to the end. Next ep is most likely Rider with extra support from the 3 command spells against a serious Gil and the long awaited Saber vs Berserker fight!

Iri, you will not be forgotten :3

Rider vs Gil is the most anticipated for me apart from the final Gil vs Saber...

Same thoughts, and we'll get her happy and smiling in the story spinoff dedicated to Ilya soon. Isn't that great! *_*

It may have ended up looking kind of derpy but everything with Waver and Rider in this episode was great, Rider's speech to Waver had been something I had been looking forward to since the start and even Waver's talk with Mr MacKenzie was pretty nice on the side. It's going to be awesome to see Rider charge a completely serious Ea wielding, Gate of Babylon spamming, Gil with the Ionian Hetairoi.

Other than that, Irisviel's death itself wasn't really that shocking but what followed it was, they managed to represent that almost disturbing aspect of Angra Mainyu corrupting her well.

feal87

Yeah, Waver is the character with the biggest growth in the main ones...

Rider vs Gilgamesh is going to be awesome, but Gilgamesh is plainly overpowered with Ea. If he always used it properly no servant could possibly match him...

yeah, the real grail is just an abomination at the moment after it got corrupted in the third war. I wonder if it was actually better in the original version...

Even so for a Servant to go up against a fully serious Gil and not be reduced to a smear on the pavement is pretty impressive in itself. Rider alongside Fate-Berserker is one of the few he actually shows respect for as well. And agreed, Zero is pretty much his coming of age story.

Pretty much, the Einzberns thought they could steamroll everything with the Zoroastrianism god of evil, and well, it backfired. I would assume so, Angra Mainyu just gave it a direction. The third war actually sounds pretty interesting when you think about it.

Well yes, we're still talking about one of the most known and famed hero in the world. If I remember correctly from the original fate series, the fame influence also the power of a servant...

Awwww, we need a proper adaptation of it. Not the joke fandisk they created! Urobuchi, where are you?! >_<

Only marginally but there are a few other things as well, from what I've heard where they're summoned has an effect as well. A thing that I'm interested would be whether their current perception has any other effects, though I guess that's what NPs are.

And I know man, Ataraxia isn't entirely bad but for some reason a lot of the unwritten Holy Grail War scenarios sound awesome. Given the time period for the third war there would have been a conflict between the Clock Tower, the Nazi equivalent, and the Japanese Imperial army over the grail amongst the usual competitors. So things would have been extremely chaotic to say the least.
Spoiler: Show
Then there's the mention Nasu made about Rin and her lecturer(emphasised for good reason) teaming up to dismantle the grail following Fate and UBW with the Mage Association rising against them. There's no mention of Servants being summoned but it's quite easy to imagine it happening given the circumstances.

Yeah, a full blown novel dedicated to it would be a great sight instead of the insipid visual novel they're working at the moment. While I like Aoko Aozaki, the story really drags in some part and they even didn't release any dub...

Spoiler: Show
I know what you're referring to. I read something about Rin and Waver fighting against other groups to dismantle the great grail years after the war.

Especially when they're charging 7000 yen for it, I haven't had a chance to properly check it out yet but Mahoyo doesn't seem entirely bad, Koyama's art is beautiful (legs, the VN) and the music is great but considering the length and the lack of voice work it's undeniably costly.

If anything I'd prefer that it wasn't Nasu who wrote it if it came to it however, other than Mahoyo the guy simply has way too much on his plate already considering he's already held up with Fate/Extra CCC, the Tsukihime remake, DDD, and the Mahoyo trilogy(?) to do. So someone else writing it would probably be better.

With Waver now out of the fight, I'm wondering if he will survive the Holy Grail War. My hunch is that he will die along with Rider, but there really is no reason for anyone to kill him unless he tries to save Rider from some fatal attack. Then again, Kirei could just kill him for fun because he's evil like that.

I think he'll survive, especially if we consider Kirei is not going to fight against him at all. It'll be a Rider vs Gilgamesh battle and I'm not sure Gilgamesh would end up killing him...

I slowly get the feeling that this show is way too cruel for me.
If it weren't the Fate franchise I don't think I could watch any more of this

I think they would choose a tragic ending for her with her energy slowly fading to zero, but instead they've chosen a horrible ending for Iri

Kirei is such an idiot, he only finds joy in destroying someones dream.

It's also sad to know that Rider won't make it, he and Waver were kind of cool. Well, in this episode Waver was rather cute ;D

After Saber failed badly in protecting Iri, I don't want her to "win" anymore.

Yes, completely cruel and sometimes over-the-top. I bear through it because the story is actually good, but otherwise...

Kirei will pay for this as we know from Fate Stay Night. He'll suffer and finally DIE at hands of Shirou/Lancer depending on the route.

She won't "win" anyway, its a lose-lose situation for her after all...

She did "win" by destroying the grail with Excalibur under Kiritsugu's command spells influence as explained in the Fate Stay Night visual novels. Gilgamesh remained on earth only because "made flesh" by the grail remnants...not because he did really win.

Kiritsugu's childish ideals are the very reason I like him so much^^ I love characters who struggle to reach what they know it's impossible and refuse to give up because that would mean losing their meaning to live. And yeah, his goal is unrealistic, but is the Grail not an omnipotent device? (as much as he knows, anyway). Then it's not so impossible anymore...

Anyway, this episode was really good, and while Irisviel's death was sad and painful, seeing her stand up to Kirei with words was actually quite satisfying, though it is taken up a notch in the novel. Waver's little scene was also pretty cool. He can be kinda awesome at times. (And he'll still have an even better moment in one of the two following episodes!)

"Obviously he can't use it at 100% while on Earth" - the key is in the last two words and more I won't say xD It'll be an epic battle^^

I think that inside the bottom of his heart he knows that no such item can possibly exist in this corrupted world. An omnipotent Grail allowing any wish to come true? I don't think he's that crazy to trust this...

yeah, Iris is a good girl and a nice main heroine. It's a sadness that she must die...

They're going to fight not on Earth...well reality marble then! That should be a separate space separated from the world's rules.

He does know. At least I think so too. But he can't give up or else he'll lose to despair. That's what makes him so charming xD

Yeah, I love Iri too. She's a great character who's the perfect example of how a woman can be strong, yet not in a badass, kick-ass term. Her death hit me quite hard when I read that part, even though it was obvious it'd eventually come.

Yep, you got it right. And that means...
Spoiler: Show
