Hello,
Today we'll talk about the seventh episode of the comedy/romance anime series airing in this packed spring season 2012 named Sankarea that continues to deliver entertaining content all around and is about to enter the second story arc.
Yes, we can consider this Ranko-centric episode as some sort of "filler" preparing us for the new story arc that will likely take much (if not all) of the remaining episodes.
In this episode the script writer of Sankarea decided to leave Rea aside and explored a bit Ranko's backstory. The main focus was on her love/hate relationship with Chihiro, a relationship tracing back to their childhood...

I felt this was also a good way to understand how much Chihiro's personality developed during the years. The answer is...he didn't grow at all. He was obsessed with zombies since god-knows-when and he's just as creepy in the flashback scenes as he is in the present.
I mean, Ranko is in love with him because he "defended" her from a random dog? Dear script writer, can you PLEASE find a BETTER excuse to create romance around the protagonist?
By the way, I have to give credit to Studio Deen for the animation of this series. They are really doing a great job till now in terms of quality, a lot better than any other production coming from them in the recent years...
Whenever I watch some scene revolving around Ranko and Chihiro, my first feeling is that they look really like some sort of "cozy family"!
Yes, their relationship is so close and friendly that it could be compared to something like "brother and sister". This is quite different from how Chihiro treat Rea and is one of the main reason Ranko won't ever win over her.
However, I do feel Ranko's beauty and personality are wasted on such a worthless guy like Chihiro. No matters what actions he will take to protect Rea in the future, Ranko can live better without a "zombie fetish" guy around her!

The next episode preview segment of this episode was quite interesting because it featured a series of spoilers of the future events. We clearly see someone tailing the couple and kidnapping Rea.
We also see the face of her father right at the end implying he's the guy behind the kidnapping. What will Chihiro do in order to protect Rea's "illusionary" freedom?
They also didn't forget about Ranko's fans wellbeing! Yes, because Ranko is going to have a bathtub fanservice scene in the next episode!

Concluding, Sankarea is proving to be an entertaining anime series and one of the best pick in this season if you're looking for a romantic story. I'm really curious if they'll be able to give closure to the main story though...
See you soon,
