Guilty Crown - So it finally ends. What a depressing ending...

Episodes : 16,17,18,19,20,21,22 22. March 2012 21:39

Hello everyone,

Just as promised months ago here we are to close our coverage of Guilty Crown, a series in which many people (me included) had a lot of expectations in, but turned out to be a mediocre one in everything except for the wonderful soundtrack.

Yes, because I won't deny that I still listen to the whole soundtrack coming from this series. It's really an incredible piece of work that I suggest to anyone in here.

By the way, I watched these last 7 episodes week by week until today and I read most of the posts revolving around it, posts filled with rage, disillusion and even jokes (the songs from Draggle were quite something...:P)

Guilty Crown

We left the story just as Hare died, but really nothing interesting happened in between to be worthy of talking in a full post. The wimpy and angsty Shu in less than one episode become "Hitler" trying to control all the students using his powers.

His reign is a very short-lived one, because his students betray him and he is stripped from his void powers by a resurrected Gai (he got a quite new and fresh "final boss" look).

What happened then? Well, Shu was not happy with his first transformation and decided to leave his "Hitler" persona behind to become "Jesus" and try to save the entire world using his own void power.

Guilty Crown

The last episode was really something incredible. I was like "WTF are they doing?!" when the male background song started just as Mana began killing people worldwide...

What were they thinking? That it would make the series look smarter?! Well, they failed, it just looked awkward...

And what should I say of that shout of Ayase at the very end? Can anything get more cheesy than that? My dear god, I was about to strangle the monitor with a mouse cord during that scene...

I'll be honest here, I tried hard to find a scene that I liked in the last episode and after much search the best I could find were the two scenes with Tsugumi (one of which is the one I choose) and the breast bouncing action of Ayase.

I'm starting to think that is quite bad if the only scene I can find interesting in an action series episode are the fanservice focused ones...

Where did you go wrong Guilty Crown? I'm hoping Nitroplus (I'm a great fan of their works) will be able to create a better story in his visual novel based on the same story named "Guilty Crown : Lost Christmas".

Guilty Crown

Concluding, Guilty Crown has been a mediocre series from start to finish. It was not inherently bad, but never managed to become interesting either...

I don't suggest this series to anyone, unless you like shounen action series with a lot of angst and a rather "uninteresting" plot.

Visual Points : 900/1000 (Hands down, apart from a couple of issues it was a great animation.)

Audio Points : 950/1000 (Probably the best anime soundtrack I ever heard...)

Story Points : 700/1000 (A B rated american action movie with a wimpy protagonist instead of a muscle bound one)

Entertainment Points : 750/1000 (After the initial happiness of a couple of episodes everything started to look annoying)

Characters Points : 800/1000 (Nice side-characters with a very hateful main character)

Final Points : 7.99/10

The series is ranked 65th over 169 series in my rankings (Updated to 22/03/2012 21:35)

See you soon,

Did the episode made any sense at all ?

I think the most stupid part was when the soldier saved Daryl. Why to hell would he bother to save him and there was no point for him to stay outside the elevator to just get shot.
All Arisa haters were crying and raging at the end that she didn't die

That scene, everyone evoke about "Evangelion"...I think.
(also "past calamity","episode of past recollection of adult"etc..etc...)
In the past, Hideaki Anno(Evangelion supervisor) said...
"We are first COPY generation."
Now, Most Japanese creators are "COPY of COPY" or "COPY of COPY of COPY" generation.
This time problem is that cause too...I think.
They might be can not escape from the spell of "Evangelion"...

As you can observe from the past episodes, Daryl had changed a bit after he met Tsugumi and when he was asked by Tsugumi to carry some of the boxes... Daryl was so tired...He should have hurt Tsugumi like what he did to the girl on the 2nd episode... Not to mention that Daryl is a cruel, spoiled brat. But because of Tsugumi ( A very cheerful girl ), he had changed a little bit and had realized some of the bad examples that the GHQs have shown...

Well, I think that Inori gave Shu a piece of a Guilty Crown ( the XXXXX thingy ) and that made Shu to live again. Not to mension that the guilty crown is the form of the bond of a person's heart. Inori is just a vessel who was meant to sacrifice i think....=.= yeah right... it's so hard to figure out...

the scene where shu fought with gai and he won and the apocalypse's over seem like it happedned too fast.

2nd the near ending song

Shu goes blind due to his void absorbing other voids but also, as seen with souta, the cancer crystals. As he takes the cats cradle from inori as she sacrifices herself, his void absorbs her blindness (evident from when she asks where shu is and reaches past him)

Haha oh my god, I expected that they at least could make a decent ending for GC. A few of the later episodes had some good potential, but now this anime showed an overly underwhelming end.

This anime proofed that visuals, bouncy boobs ^^ and audio can't outweigh a weird storytelling, there was too much up and down with the main hero/wimp and I still don't get the motivation of this nutty professor and his minions.

How could they messed up this anime, the beginning actually wasn't bad, but then it went downhill, I can't believe it

life is valuable, when someone you love dies, you can cry all you want but still you must continue with your life and move on. every death always happened for a reason. so don't just think about what you have lost, think of what you still have.

In my own opinion, the problem in this series is not about who should die, but what is the reason of their deaths, hmmm Hare's death? Shu decided to become evil, then he was betrayed, then he lost an arm, and at the end nothing good happened..

then Inori died just to save Shu, at the end he's just a useless blind cripple..

So i think their deaths is nonsense.. haha!

The only sweet thing in this series is about Hare's love and Inori feeling love, and oh some of the strong friendships, nothing more!

i must say i like how this series started, but not how it ends.. i'm just depressed because it ends this way, but in reality i'm really Mad. >_<

in the end i realized something... i only watched this because of Inori.. hoho

I read through a lot of these comments, from what I can see most of you didn't understand why Shu ended up blind and armless.

Remember, Shu's ability allowed him to take on all of a persons benefits and defects, he became blind because he took Inori's blindness from her when she gave him her life. (Remember the glowing red string she gave to him? Yeah I'm assuming that was like her life force.) So it wasn't 'random blindness', he'd jut taken on Inori's problems before she passed away and of course hy being blind he can no longer use his power because it requires sight for him to pull out someone's void.

As for Hare dying, that was most likely just so they could bring up the concept that if your void is destroyed, you die as well. It makes perfect sense that Shu would become really bitter and essentially "Hitler" because he was told that Hare died from a biological weapon, furthermore she was in the situation due to Shu's friend being and

Personally I didn't find it so hard to understand and the deaths certainly weren't pointless. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

That's one interpretation to see it, but I'm not that good in watching these details and trying to speculate.

Still can't like this series man. Everything looked forced and B-Class action movie from the start till the end. It's of course only my own opinion...

Gai's death and the mid-point end (12th episode was it?) was definitely useless because they invalidated everything in that episode just soon after.

I just finished GC and started looking at reviews and it seems that its rating is not as great as I thought. I would say the plot and ending is not "good", but I wasn't surprised at all when I finished the last episode. After all, there is some sort of ongoing rise of "dark, sad, dystopia" animes recently, which is kinda annoying and the sad end is predictable from the start.

Since it was a sad ending anyway, they could of just let Shu die with Inori and be together in their after life or something...atleast that was what I expected at the start.

Gai's whole transformation didn't make sense, at least Shu's bad guy to good guy process had a reason, although the reason itself is pretty ridiculous.

Hare died, a way the drive the story I guess....they needed a something to propel the story onwards thats all......

Love, friendship, family were just little "decorations" to those "full-on", "quality" action scenes.

Everyone says the art and music is good and that's the only good thing and blah, blah....I think it is kinda true... the character design was appealing and Supercell's songs are cool, but that was all it had.

Overall, I wouldn't say the anime is bad.. the plot wasn't great, but to me its on my "okay" level...but I think its because I have seen anime like Blood-C, and read books like 1984....no other storyline can beat the boringness of these two...Also, one thing most people don't mention, but the anime had a good cast, a handful of popular voice actors and actresses.....would that count as a plus for this anime?

"sad endings" are indeed increasing recently, but luckily we still have some really good series like Steins Gate. (Give it a shot if you haven't already)

Yes, that was what everyone thought as the most understandable and "reasonable" ending. Instead he gets to live together with part of the cast...>_<

Its sad that Hare's death have done nothing to improve Shu. He was an idiot before, and he remained even after...

Blood-C was abnormally bad as series, even more bad than Guilty Crown. However we can't define it as good by just saying "hey, its not the worst series I ever watched", but try to compare it with a good series as well...

I just finished this series. I can honestly say at the beginning, I was expecting much more than what I got. I think it was after Hare died that my opinion just started to go down. The whole Shu regime of students coincidentally after she died? Come on... that whole student SS replication was probably the stupidest idea, in my opinion. Shu isn't very good at being a bad guy. I more or less predicted that his classmates would rebel against him, try to kill him. I predicted that he'd yet again be able to use voids (I even predicted he'd get another arm.)

I DON'T WANT TO PREDICT WHAT HAPPENS, I LIKE SURPRISES!

I was even right in my guess that some sort of sacrifice would be made in the end so the rest of the world would be happy blah blah blah. I simply can't put my disappointment of the last half (third?) or so of the series into words. Perhaps the producers needed to end the show quickly so they threw some bogus ending together.

Overall, I wish it had ended halfway through, it would have been much better. Soundtrack was great, great, great.

Same feelings here, since Shu became Hitler and then Jesus the whole series (already bad) have gone down to the drain.

Not sure, because they spent a lot of money to make this series visually good, why not improving the storyline instead? That would've made the viewers a lot happier imho!

Yes, completing it at halfway with Gai and Mana death (was it episode 11 or 12?!) would've been 10 times better...

I thought Mirai Nikki was actually pretty good though. The very ending had me confused at first (I watch all of my shows in raw format) but then I went and looked up what the message changed to and it was actually pretty decent in my opinion.

Now I'm starting... what was it... Accel World, Steins Gate, and Usagi Drop. Weird combo, I know lol

Wo Wo Wo.  Although he became Hitler. no one has mentioned the fact that he actually Did get them through the wall like he promised.  He just had to be an cold heartless guy to do it, but he still did it and then he let them go free.  Which confuses me, why did they betray him when they actually accomplished their goal?

As for the other things, Storyline wise, Shu definitely Should have died.  But if I had my way the guy would always get the girl in the end one way or another

Out of all the anime I've watched, Guilty Crown has one of the best visual quality and music. However, as many people have commented, the plotline is SH*T.

I just finished the series yesterday and boy I wanted to punch the writers so bad. This anime has one of the sh*ttiest endings.
Inori dies and Shu just lives on being happy?
When the writers killed of Hare i was "meh thats ok" then Shu goes all wannabe Hitler (and fails) and i think "WTF??"
But when they killed Inori they went a step too far. And in the end Shu ends up becoming some blind guy dressed up like an old man??
At the very end where Shu puts on some earphone (or whatever it is)and hugs Inori did not appeal to me...it made no sense.

Overall i dont think the writers should of killed off Inori (Inori is BEST)and if they did have to kill her then they should of killed Shu with her.

Visual 9/10   Music 10/10 (except the old man voice killing everybody at end)

Ending 1/10    Plot 3/10

In the end i think i really only watched this anime for Inori and her singing.

I wouldnt say the plot was shitty, it was a bit cliché but its matter of taste, I found it pretty damn enjoyable. I also did not like the way you guys refered Shu as "hitler" or "jesus", if you dont recall then he did what he was forced to do, the fact that he was acting/being the bad guy was to make sure most of ppl will come out alive, if you ever actually read between the lines (or hear if you actually enjoyed the wordplay in japanease) then you would get that he was always so-called "Jesus", he try'ed his best during the times he was the "hitler", it all depends how you see it, the beauty is in the watchers eye as they say. There were countless leaders during our history who did the same as Shu during tough times and the only one you can refer him is Hitler? Hitler is famous not cause he was good person who did evil things, his famous cause he killed millions of ppl and started world war II, did Shu order genoside, not as far as I saw. He used the weaks cause otherwise it would not have worked, if the "strong" ones would have joined forced, weak would not have stand the chance as secret service and everyone would have ran out of vaccine and would have died in the end. Its true that his men/girl did bad things but you cant control everything. Nothing personal but think while you watch anime, not just look out for boobs and hope you see half-naked chicks fighting during episodes.

Ayase did call out "Shu" in the end, wouldnt you if one of your closest friends would give his/her own life to make sure you stay alive? The only thing which I regret about the anime was that Shu did not die or Inori did not stay alive, I did hope that when Shu destroyed Mana's Void in Gai's hand, he would just put Inori's void into Mana's/Inori's body and it would all end well or if it doesnt, atleast they both die cause it was selfish from Inori to take on all the virus and leave Shu out to live a life, depressed that the girl he loved gave her life to save him and to look back at the things he did. He was not loved for most of the episodes but he did the best he could, dont expect too much from young boy.

All in all, it was pretty good anime, recommend when you like sad series which require you to think along the watching, ending aint what you might expect but thats not out choice, its the makers. 8/10

I think you got the story wrong. To me, this anime is perfect because it shows reality. Instead of every anime out there, whereby the main character is some badass who kicks everyone else's ass. This anime shows how vulnerable even the main character can be. Shu is just like any ordinary boy with his limits. He is afraid of many things just like we are too. And that not everything will end with happy ever after.

YOU TOOK HIS ARM SO COMPLETE IT MAKE HIM THE DARTH VADER LAAME!!! THEY COULDN'T EVEN EXPRESS THAT THEY LOVED EACHOTHER 22 EPISODES AND NEITHER SHU OR INORI DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING TO EACHOTHER. I know they said it to others like at the last part inori tells gai that she loves shu but nooooo you should make it more dramatic what about the plots I think they wanted to do something else at first cuz episode 12 if I remember it correctly GAI wanted shu to kill him and mana YOU CAN'T THINK THAT YOU CAN BREAK SOMEONES BOUNDS BY KILLING HIM OR HER even if he meant he wanted her soul to be saved it doesnt make sense he explains it like he planned it the whole savior thing blah blah that shu was going to kill him and save them THEN WHY THE HELL DID YOU TRY TO KILL HIM IN THE FIRST PLACE YOU LEAVE HIM DEFENSELESS AND YOU WERE GOING FOR THE FINAL BLOW TARDS soooo annoyed

In all honesty i have been watching anime for a long time now lol (makes me feel a bit old xD). I full well understand why they ended it that way and how the story was and i must say i am glad to have watched it Cx I disliked the ending a lot when i first watched it because i really loved Inoris character xC but it was a drama and they ended it as a drama so i can't dislike it because of how sad the end was. There are very few anime out there that i can honestly say ended with me loving and hating them at the same time (hate was because it was just to damn sad) loved because i understood why it had happened that way. Hopefully when i'm not busy i can put together an amv or full episode (with the rights to do so of course) to create a better end that puts that hate at ease much like Clannad.

If they are not making season 2 to bring back Inori.  They should have killed Shu and have him and Inori get each other in another life.  It had too long of dragging out this love story between than end it without no resolution.  From opening and ending credits that is what they are promoting in the series.  Plus Inori as main character deserved a bit more than a dumb ending.

Especially because I loved the rest of the series so that just the ending made it harder on me. If I thought it sucked then I wouldn't care about the ending being bad because it was already bad. But instead it was good like really good then ended terribly.

The ending was probably the weakest part of this series. Really really bad. It could've proved a lot better if stopped mid-way through the story with the first "ending" with Gai's death.

I guess it was an ok anime but I hated the fact that Inori died and Shu lived, I mean why would she save him if he had told her that he wanted to die with her (or something like that). They should've ended it in the twelfth episode. My ideal ending would've been for both of them to live and love each other
and the soundtracks are amazing, I still can't stop hearing the 1st season's intro

I agree with you, the series would've been far better if completed at the 12th episode. Kind of sad how the second half destroyed much of this series credibility...

Yeah, the soundtracks of Guilty Crown are awesome.

Yeah they worked hard to try to make it really interesting but in my opiñion it was a fail, and I have to agree with you Tsugumi is better than Inori
although she's 14 years old :/ but yea both Inori and Shu were young characters and should've had a happy ending but one died and the other ended up blind. Code Geass ending relieved me by taking my mind off Guilty Crowns ending.

Well, Tsugumi is great indeed, but it doesn't take much to be better than Inori. Inori is really beautiful, but far too emotionless for my tastes...

Well you got that right and Tsugumi was more charming with her lively style scenes, especially her Missle Kick (drop kicks)

If only there can be real girls like her -.-
Although I wouldn't mind meeting someone with an Inori style, that's actually really rare since more girls are girly if you know what I mean haha

Haha it would be a miracle to meet up with someone like that but I would loove to find someone like Shiina Mashiro from Sakurasou No Pet Na Kanojo...I would probably get a heart attack if someone like that relies on me.

You should check it out if you still haven't. I still haven't finished seeing it but I have high hopes that it will have a good end

Ahahah, Shiina Mashiro is probably even less likely considering that she's supposedly an artist genius as well...

Give a look at the side-bar to see which other series we are talking about.

hmm..Guilty crown was not that bad...In fact it's one of the best..
Turning a weak boy into a savior, experiencing pain,etc..Unlike those who are so powerful that can beat all asses, you'll already know the ending before you watch it..

If i were Shu i would make suicide -_-
Inori is dead and I think he could never love someone again.
But I love this Anime. I hope the souls of Inori and Shu are connected because she saved his life by giving him hers and they can meet each other whenever they want.

They led the final episode perfectly towards either shu dying to save Inori or possibly the two in the end either sacrificing themselves to save everyone or somehow destroying everything related to the apocalypse virus and starting their own life together. Then the writers were like, lol jk, inori is dead. Shu ended up losing everything! Why?! Inori finally got past being a puppet just to die. It didn't help that they crammed 5 episodes into the last. Gai, who was trying to stop Mana the whole time, should have been the martyr instead and saved Inori and Shu. That and Daryl  and Tsugumi could've totally worked in the end.

The only death I cared about in this anime was Inori's(probably because she was the least annoying.) Every other god damn character was annoying as hell. Hare didn't go 2 episodes without swooning over Shu, I mean seriously was there anything else she did to affect the story besides die and shove her boobs in Shu's face? At times she was more of a plot device then Inori(beach episode I'm looking at you.) Hare did not deserve the screen time she got and that's saying a lot considering she got barely any in the first place. I felt nothing when she died besides happiness that this annoying bitch was dead. Then there's Gai who died not just once but fucking twice. Did they honestly expect me to care either time. Then there's Inori who actually made me feel something after her death, honestly people say she's useless without knowing what they're saying, without her story goes NOWHERE. Shu would be the useless piece of cowardly shit he was at the beginning. I don't understand how people actually cared when some of these characters died(namely Hare) and then others feel they can say that Inori was the worst character -_-. Every character in this anime was a shitty  ass character NO ONE CHARACTER WAS BETTER THEN THE OTHER CAUSE THEY ALL SUCKED. Just felt the need to say this after seeing how many people like some of these characters over Inori.

Hmm, I think this anime has to not be taken seriously. I watched it in a very tired state and open mindedly, it was depressing the whole way through. Definitely something to watch if you are into dramas and scifi. I wish they would've shown the back story in the beginning but at the same time not knowing what was going on kept me interested in finishing the episodes. I enjoyed it for what it was. The concept was cool, the ending was depressing. The main character  was interesting since he was somewhat unique, definitely psychotic, though it'd be normal in the situations he faced which many people seem to not understand. I guess to really enjoy it you have to put yourself in the main character's shoes and honestly think about what you would do. At the same time you are aware from the get go that Shu is kind of slow and has a very hard time making decisions. Anyway, all in all, it was one of the best animes I've watched lately, I never really feel emotions when I watch animes, this one made me cry. I wouldn't of minded if they had stopped at 12 episodes, but at the same time I wanted more. Episode 12-22 were still worth watching although I did'nt fully understand gaius's character although it was briefly explained that he was supposed to be the vessel and was raised to be the vessel... Just the fact that it seemed like Gaius knew what was going to happen all the time made me not care about his death. The rest of the deaths were sad, specially Inori's. I don't think Hare needed more or less screen time, I don't understand why people bitch about her character, it was plauin and simple, she had a crush on shu, she was shy and what not, she awkwardly tried to get close to him, she ended up dying for him... That is pretty sad. Anyway, I'd recommend this anime to people who enjoy crying and unusual animes.
