Shin Megami Tensei Persona 4 - Emotional buildup and friendship

by feal8725. December 2011 20:43

Hello,

Let's go talk about the great 12th episode of the action/mystery anime series of this fall season 2011 named Shin Megami Tensei Persona 4 completing the first cour of the planned 25 episodes.

While everything seems to indicate the "killer arc" of the storyline as completed, I don't really think that sorry NEET guy was even related to the killings in the first place.

He was just a mere "plot device" used to consolidate the relationship of the main heroes and showcase the various Persona (really a lot of them) obtained by our protagonist.

Shin Megami Tensei Persona 4

This episode is divided into two main logical block. The first focuses on our protagonist facing his own fears, while the second focuses on our heroes "capturing the killer ending the string of murders in the city".

Why quotes? Because after watching his shadow disappear without leaving any persona (I suppose the reason is linked to the fact he rejected his other self) I can only see him as a victim of the killer.

I can only smile if I think at the face the police (Nanako's father) will do as soon as the murders will start again leaving him completely powerless.

Shin Megami Tensei Persona 4

Thanks to this episode, we also finally manage to get some additional detail over our protagonist personality that looks a lot weaker than I first thought...

His morale was easily destroyed by being left alone without friends and he looks less and less "killer-like" the more I try to think about it.

I still think he has some connection to the killings (especially for his persona obtained without any shadow-arc), but I'm not really sure what exactly this connection is. Hopefully they'll explain in detail during the second cour!

Obviously Persona 4 don't forget to put some comedy scene here and there like this one in order to keep the story as light as possible.

As you can see female competition is scary and really dangerous stuff. My poor Risecchi is down for some bad time if she tries to challenge the fierce Yukiko/Chie pair!

By the way, it was really unexpected to see Risecchi as unable to cook just like Chie and Yukiko. I really thought she was a nice cook...:P

Shin Megami Tensei Persona 4

Judging from the preview, next episode will start a two episode long "social-links" chapter that will eventually give even more powers/persona to our protagonist and improve his relationship with the rest of the main cast.

Concluding, Persona 4 is proving to be a really entertaining series capable of showcasing emotions as well as action and comedy.

I'll continue to watch and blog about this series in the future as well.

See you soon,

Persona 4 is well rounded in regards to how many different things it manages to do.
The whole scene with the Persona's this episode was neat. They sure know how to animate a fight scene, even Yosuke was impressed.

That's the awesome thing about it. It jumps from comedy to action to drama keeping the quality levels to the top!

Agreed that the battle using many persona made Yuu looks really cool.
Judging from the number of persona he used they should be pretty much all the one he acquired or not? (you may know more about each one of them...)

The only problem is the animation quality that looked a bit bad this episode...

Some of the animation was a bit bad but the animation in the action scene was top notch, all that fire and wind must be so hard to animate.

Yu currently has a persona from every Arcana he has unlocked, in the game there is about 10 persona for every arcana ranging from Pixie all the way up to Lucifer. In the last fight Yu will most likely be using top tier persona which will be so cool.

Agreed, strangely the battle was well animated, but the character not...wonder why?!

10 persona per arcana?! :O
Ouch, I'm getting more and more interested in this, I wonder if the other character will have an improved persona as well...

It might happen

You have to fuse persona together in the game to make stronger ones. SOme of them take 6+ personas to fuse. It was a right pain.
We need to keep an eye out for a persona called Alice she is super cute.

Probably I saw some image of her in the past. (also posted her here in a previous post)
Is she a blonde girl with a white-blue dress?! She's definitely cute! :O

Yeah that's her. She was in Persona 3 as well. She is one of the better persona in the Death Arcana.

There is a lot of tiny things the anime is skipping over and in the game you get to explore the social links with the other character more deeply. P4 Golden is coming out on the PS Vita within a year so that will be worth waiting for.

I'll probably play the PS2 one as I don't plan to buy any console. I haven't enough time/will to even play PC games recently...

I was really surprised with how they handled this episode. You don't often see the protagonist affected like this, so it was an interesting change of pace.

Really, it's not so much that Rise can't cook as she just has inhuman taste in what is good. It's interesting to note that Nanako could handle the spicy food while Yukiko can't.

Agreed, it was a nice change of pace and I actually liked the way they made the protagonist look more HUMAN thanks to this.

Nanako can handle anything from what I saw in this episode. She want new friends, she's so cute...ç__ç
Our queen Chie instead is just bad at cooking in the normal way!

I suppose this is always the issue when you take the choices away from the lead of a visual novel-style game. I'm just happy Yu didn't turn out like Shiro Emiya.

Nanako-chan~. She's such a good girl. Haha.

Haha, I thought Rise knows how to cook too. Turns out, I think she's the worst.

Nanako is like an angel on earth! Pure!

Same as me then, but well. I'll force me to eat even that kind of food for such a cutie...

It was a wise move to take this route. In the game it was perfectly understandable that they didn't have much development of the main character as it was a personification of the gamer (Allowing a bit more freedom on if he would be rude, friendly or a mixture of the two), but as he is not a controllable character, it was most probably the best place to include something surrounding him.

Shame they don't have him struggling like most people do on the first time around - such as spending weeks in his bedroom making envelopes and eating the ultimate beef bowl every day (Although that did make an appearance in Episode 11)

I completely agree with you, I know that as default the protagonist of the persona games is totally silent and without any personality. It's nice to see they have given him a rather peculiar character.

I haven't played the game, but that sound really grindy!!!

So, I'm not sure if calling Kubo a plot device to showcase Yu's persona and relationships really works since he's in the game too. It's obvious that the story isn't over and he's an interesting dynamic to the case.

There's still quite a lot left to cover...even a whole character that hasn't been recruited yet.

...Rise's voice is still unfair >.>

Nanako telling everyone their food tasted good was super cute too

Well, the story is still long, we're only halfway through the series. I wonder what will be the next two episode arc, looks so filler...

Yep, our lovely "well endowed" (fan art teaches) Naoto Shirogane...

Agreed...its like an eargasm everytime...

Being Nanako is suffering...

it looks like more social link building to me...honestly, it looks like filler, but look at the Persona it created for Yu this week O.o

yup...she still has to come into the field...and it's hard to do that if the killer is really behind bars

it's okay! Nanako has cute girl plot armor! She can withstand it all!

Mhn...well, yes this episode's battle was awesome so I'll forgive them this time around.

Probably in the next arc we'll get the revelation and she'll be back to investigate again...

Oh yeah, nobody can defeat or violate the cute girl plot armor...

something I didn't mention in my post...I don't think they have a new Arcana for the start of the next episode. The bromance scene after Yosuke saves Yu and the fact that Yosuke started calling him Yu makes me think that maybe Yosuke's social link was advanced in this week's episode and maybe we'll see his Persona evolve instead

Oh well, that would be awesome even if I'm more eager to see the second form of Chie's persona. I don't know why, but I think it'll be cool...

This episode finally got rid of a nagging feeling I been getting since the beginning. I'm used to, since I played through the game as seeing the investigation team as close friends. Feeing them finally call each other by first name puts me at ease.

This episode sure is the start of many red herrings as warned by Margaret and Igor which only leads to what I consider the most interesting part of the story but that is still a ways off.

What I really liked though, was how this episode reinforces the idea of the bonds created by Yuu as showcased by all the different personae belonging to the different arcana.

Agreed, it was a bit weird to hear them calling him "Narukami" instead of the proper name. I mean he's the one who saved their life!

I wonder what exactly Igor and Margaret are...

Yep, and I liked how he used all of them at once to defeat the shadow of this week. He was a bit cool...
