Fate / Zero - Yes my friend, they trolled us! Second season...

by feal8724. December 2011 23:20

Hello everyone,

Here we are to talk about the 13th and last episode of the first season of Fate Zero that leave us with a very big cliffhanger (Rider, Lancer and Saber attacking Caster) and no battles at all in pure trolling style.

Fortunately the talk between Waver and Rider was excellent and really improved my opinion of Rider. He's even more likable than I first thought...

The second season is slated to air in the spring season 2012 starting in April so there is quite a big gap in between the two seasons. I will probably need to watch the first season again just before april in order to prepare myself for the second one...:)

FateZero

This whole episode was dedicated to the Waver/Rider pair, with the first having a dream from his servant in a similar way to what happened many times to Shirou during the fifth war.

We finally get to know a bit more about Rider's past and his real desire to get the holy grail (to see the ocean he longed while alive). I have to say that watching Rider care about Waver was quite heartwarming...

Knowing Waver future position as explained from the original Fate/Stay Night game (Rin True ending) and watching this episode confirmed my feelings that his experience with Rider in the fourth war was the key to his success.

In a proper trollish fashion the episode end with this short scene of Saber, Rider and Lancer attacking the monster-Caster in order to end his life once and for all before he becomes too powerful.

I have to say that Ryuunosuke's talk with Caster before the great battle was remarkable. He really don't look the cold crazy monster I knew from some episodes ago and I wonder if he has some special reason for needing the grail.

I'm also curious about how Saber will be able to fight against a proper servant like Caster with her wrist injury.

FateZero

I'm not sure they will be the only one partecipating to this final battle because judging from the preview both Gilgamesh and Berserker will appear in the next episode.

Speculating on the next season is pretty much pointless at this point, but knowing that we have only 12 remaining additional episodes in the second season I'm sure we'll get our share of action.

This is particularly true if we think that 6 of the 7 heroes are still alive and kicking. I just wonder if it'll be really Caster the first one to go...

FateZero

Concluding, Fate Zero, despite the trolling, is continuing to be an entertaining series that I'll watch and blog in the second season as well.

We just have to wait 3 months and half now to get the next episode...:(

See you soon,

feal87

I'm just glad the cliff hanger wasn't too big. Got to wait three months for the fighting to start. That's almost too long.

Is Caster a gigantic squid ?
They should end it in a proper way with defeating Caster, to end it with a cliffhanger is pretty stupid. Nothing much happened in the show and they even end it like this.
You can only hope they use the time for making the action scenes.

Now yes, after he got assimilated. I wonder what Japan have against squids...

Exactly 14 episodes (if you count the first as a double one) and nothing happened at all. Now they'll have to cram everything in the remaining 12 episodes...

They've adapted it up to the beginning of the third volume of the LN (meaning they finished the second and adapted a bit of the third), so they have less than 2 books for the remaining 12 episodes, while they adapted more than 2 books in 14. I'd say they're just going at the right pace, so it shouldn't be "crammed".

Oh, so basically 6 heroes (well 5 if you count Saber as the "winner") will die in a very short term in less than 2 novels?! That's remarkable, I'm curious about how they'll manage to do it while continuing to explain all the details of the story.

I'm not sure how much this will be possible with only 12 episodes and 6 heroes still alive. That is unless some of the heroes (somebody said Lancer?!) dies very fast...

Exactly, the deaths only start in the 3rd volume. And I think they'll managed to adapt it just fine.

Did you mention Lancer? The poor guy's luck never runs out. The way he dies is just... O_o It seems like in the Fate universe, being Lancer truly IS suffering.

Oh no, wait, Assassin dies in the last few pages of volume 2, I believe... Not that it makes that much difference. Most action and deaths are concentrated in the last two volumes.

FSN Lancer's end in UBW made me love him, this Lancer dies in a way that can only make me feel sorry for him. But... I won't go into details. I'm not the type to go around spreading spoilers, since I hate to read those myself. Unless you want me to, that is xD

Yeah, I can't help but laugh everytime I see that facebook profile image they made xD By the way, did you get the impression that Tokiomi is really, really naive? Because he really stroke me as that from the very beginning of the novel but I didn't get that impression with the anime...

Yep, that was totally awesome. This Lancer on the other hand... there's something similar about their deaths but at the same time they're totally different.

Nope, I see him as the perfect Magus in terms of knowledge and behaviour and a nice father as well.

He will just be unlucky for sure, because I don't think a powerful mage like Tokiomi will be defeated in fight by any other master Kiritsugu included.

feal87 | | Reply

12/30/2011 9:01:06 PM #

Dusk252

Indeed, he is what you'd call a "perfect magus", along with all that implies. He's good, and he knows he's good, which gives birth to overconfidence. He's also way to trusting of those around him - he sees Kirei as the perfect pupil, truly admires him and trusts him as family, while we know Kirei isn't exactly one to be trusted...
As for him being a nice father... Have you possibly forgotten episode 1? Which "nice father" would send his daughter away while being totally aware of what would happen to her? Regardless of the circumstances, that's simply unforgivable. And he's not that nice of a father to Rin either. He's a good magic teacher and knows how to treat a child, but that's pretty much it.

As for your second paragraph, I ain't gonna spoil anything so I'll just answer with knowledge acquired up until what's been animated so far. While Tokiomi is indeed a powerful magus, he has, more than anyone, the mindset of a mage, which is exactly what Kiritsugu specialized himself in predicting and countering.

Dusk252 | 40 Comments - starstarstar | Reply

feal87

Well, I agree that Kirei is the person I would less trust in the world. He's CREEPY!

I don't think he has done that without thinking of Sakura well being. I'm sure there has to be another explanation in the novels, something related with some special conditions in his childs that we still don't know about...

I don't think Tokiomi is like Archibald. Tokiomi is scheming in his actions and don't like fighting without knowing well his enemies. We saw already that he thought Kiritsugu to be a major enemy since the beginning...

Dusk252

Don't forget I HAVE read the novels. There is indeed another explanation. And ok, I trolled you (but still couldn't convince you... why do you like Tokiomi so much? xD), he didn't know about the worms thing. He's not a good father, but he's not as evil as to completely disregard his daughter's well-being.

He's not like Archibald, and yes, he likes to plan everything to perfection but, as noticed by Kirei in the first novel, he always tends to miss some details when it comes to the execution (pretty much like Rin in FSN - must be genetic), and he's overconfident, thinking he's always in control, thinking he can always regain the upper-hand. He's just too optimistic for his own sake. And he wouldn't exactly think of counter measures to technology more than Archibald did (there's no denying that automatic defense was a good method), because technology is something he despises, to the point of ignoring its benefits (he only uses magic for communication, for example, disregarding the practicability of more "mundane" methods). And yes, he's a good planner, but Kiritsugu is a better strategist, having the advantage of being able to think of good solutions under pressure, while Tokiomi is more of a long-time planner, being less versatile.

Dusk252 | 40 Comments - starstarstar | Reply

12/30/2011 9:42:57 PM #

feal87

I don't know why, but watching Tokiomi care that deeply about Rin in the Rin specific episode was the part that really made me think. "He can't be that evil, there must be a reason".

Well, she is his child so I think that yes it may well be genetic. The only difference is that I'd forgive anything to Rin because she's so damn cute. *__*

I'm not even sure he'll ever fight Kiritsugu to be honest, because Kariya hate deeply Tokiomi and may end up being the first to clash with him.

Not sure if he stand any chance against him though...

Ok, I must say your intution is really good xD

You are... right again. In everything you said. It will be a really one-sided match.

Well, I did made it clear we were discussing an hypothetical situation and my take on it is that Kiritsugu would win.

I really enjoyed the Rin dedicated episode, but well I'm a sucker for her...*__*

I'm sure Kiritsugu would win as well, but only because of plot armor. He needs to win because he appears in Fate Stay Night.

On a real battle, imho the end-result would be unclear, they're both talented and both can win.
