"Wednesday" Effect - Bloggers between boredom and lack-of-will

by feal8716. November 2011 21:29

Hello everyone,

Let's have some different post today and let's talk about the common enemy of anime and VN bloggers, an enemy that affect all kind of blogs (Editorials, Episodics, Reviews) with maybe the exception of the "news" related one.

The blogger category most hit is definitely the one where the blogger do episodic posting for many series every season ending up creating a routine where you expect to write a post in a periodic manner.

Yes, I'm talking about the dread "wednesday" effect that appear every season and has no mercy for any of us. What is the "wednesday effect" you ask? Before explaining in detail, let's go and analyze what we do every season before starting to blog...

Sora no Otoshimono

There are many philosophies involved in choosing a series to cover in an anime blog. There are some bloggers that bases their series coverage even before actually watching one episode using trailers and information on the net as a basis for their reasoning (like what they do on RandomC).

There are some others like me that watch all the first/second episode of all the series and then decide what to cover depending on the level of enjoyment given by each series in the season.

Regardless of the way choosen, we all end up with a number of series we decided to cover in a regular manner that create in us some sort of weekly schedule of posts that should continue for the whole duration of the season...

Sora no Otoshimono

Unfortunately our expectations while watching a series may wane during time due to many reasons (poor content, lack of direction in the story, bad visual quality) and may force us to decide whether to drop or not a particular series.

This is when the "wednesday" effect appear. You are faced with the choice of continue to blog the series you aren't enjoying anymore (to keep consistency in your blog) or drop it altogether ending up creating a hole in your otherwise perfect schedule.

Generally the hole is more likely to appear in days where the number of shows to cover is extremely low, like exactly is "wednesday" this season.

Sora no Otoshimono

I saw over the course of the years many bloggers following either way to resolve the issue. I appreciate the professionality of the ones who keep consistency and blog about a series till the very end, no matter how much they're going to hate it.

I'm, by the way, a proud member of the "let's drop it" faction. The problem now is, what to do if you end up dropping a series or two in the middle of an anime season?

Will you live with the hole in the middle of the week screwing up all your plans? Will you try covering something else that you ignored till now?

Sora no Otoshimono

In my rather short blog career (I'm near to be 10 months old), I tried all three way and found myself without a real solution to apply in every case.

I found that continuing to blog about a series you hate is extremely painful and start to make the blogging hobby more like a work and that's definitely something I don't suggest to anyone!

On the other side, leaving a day without doing anything makes me feel like I've been slacking too much and neglecting the blog.

I tried to cover some series I ignored in the past, but I felt bad jumping in the middle of the season on a new series. It's like entering a bus when you clearly see that is already completely full...

Sora no Otoshimono

In the end, my solution has been creating this post today and in general, these recurring editorial posts, and you?

What do you do to fill in the gaps in your anime/VN blogging schedule? You leave the gap behind? You fill it in with some other series? You never drop a series?

See you soon,

feal87

P.S. A thanks to marthaurion that unwittingly gave me the idea to write this post. :P

Yeah, you have a rather solid formation I see, with plenty of series for covering even more than one per day.

honestly, I think it might be better for us to look at these sorts of gap days as days where we can test our creativity, challenge ourselves by trying new things. Granted I haven't been able to think of anything yet...but the theory is still sound!

To the fill the gap I do....absolutely nothing. Just kidding, lol.

I hardly do not do any work on my blog during the weekday, if anything else I am either studying during half of the day or wait until night. Most the weekday is preoccupied with finishing homework and what little time left is on watching anime. I am not much of episodic blogger, so I can not answer the question about episodic coverage.

Lol,

Well, that's the life of the student after all and I agree its hard. (just wait to see how's the working life...even more problematic...
)

Its not much about episodic coverage, but more a "periodic coverage". Something like Warum's (What is Tomato) VN review of the week...

Nah, I would say it is easier compared to working. I should stop complaining since I WILL HAVE it much HARDER once I graduate, but I digress.

Oh, I see. In that case, I do not have anything to say to that. Although, if a particular series does not interest you, no need to feel obligated to cover it. Especially for someone like yourself, I am sure time is a valuable asset to waste on something that is no worth covering. That is why I always opt for a full review.

Full reviews are nice, but still somehow lack the continuity of feelings and anticipation an episodic coverage can give.

There are some kind of series that really are incredible to cover weekly like Fate/Zero or Guilty Crown, in both there is plenty to say every week and plenty to speculate together with the readers!

Not exactly. I rather not say, but to put it simply: I will be glad to have a job, lol.

Really? It seems easy for me. Not to say that is easy, but I can still include my feelings properly in a full written review. I just rather not do the episodic since it takes a lot of work and I would tend to miss out on the bigger picture once the series is done. But that is just me.

Agreed. Fate/Zero is a real interesting watch as well as Guilty Crown *despite Shu atm*

I don't have a schedule, so there aren't any gaps to fill...

But anyway, I agree that dropping a series that you hate blogging is a better choice. By making the blogging hobby more work than play, it just makes it harder to continue blogging all together.

I never even considered this problem when I started blogging but it defiantly exists. But for me it's Wednesdays and Thursdays that air nothing I can blog about. Plus when Squid girl had those weeks off Tuesday was empty as well. I've fill the gap with a post about my room and OP and Ed's but it never really solved the problem. From now on I consider the middle of the week my blogging holiday and write some more of my book instead.

That's also another way, some random post here and there and then holiday. Maybe I just need to learn to take some holiday as well...

Guilty Crown doesn't get released until nearly midday Friday for me. So I have nothing Wednesday or Thursday and then the big Friday with Persona, Crown and Boku wa. Holiday are good to have just make sure you only take them when there is nothing airing.

As for the book... I started about a month ago and have been writing in my spare time which is mostly Wednesdays and Thursdays. It's unedited text at the moment with a lot of inconsistencies. I think it falls under adventure as a genre and it's set in a 1600 kind of time period. The main character is an 8 year old angel with 1 mechanical wing (Hard to explain) and she travels with a merchant, knight and a spoiled rich girl (all around 20) at the moment i'm just having fun with character development.

My way of doing posts is a little more haphazards. I generally only discuss a new chapter if there's something interesting I have to say about it. That means I can pick and choose what to write about, but it has the unfortunate side effect that my site has no real schedule for posts.

As for dropping series, the beauty of discussing manga instead of anime is that you usually have to dedicate time into something before you can discuss it. Anything I dislike (*coughAirGearcough*) I tend to drop long before I can put up a post about it.

My main concern is still the whole thing about my updates lacking consistency. Sometimes I get one post out a day, and sometimes it goes to one a week. Sometimes there's just not much to talk about. I considered doing something like posting on certain days of the week (Tues, Thurs and Sat, for example), but since I read 8 weekly manga and a bunch of monthly series, I may end up having to pick and choose, which is not what I want.

I suppose that since a lot of what I read has erratic update schedules themselves, it may be a little fitting.

That happened to me when I was doing episodic post on Hanasaku Iroha. I didn't drop the anime but I decided the series is best viewed at one go. I thought it would be better that way so I stopped writing HanaIro posts and fill the gap with other random posts. I still give a final impression of the series after it ended. It's only fair if I do that I guess.

I would probably drop any anime that I hate. I've only dropped 1 anime so far in my life. So basically i've only made one mistake for choosing a bad anime. Usually I'll go to some forum or MAL to check out the overall rating of the anime. I only read the first impression and also the short review that some people post. I find it very useful in choosing the right anime i'm about to watch.

There are also some anime that I put it on-hold. The reason is normally because there is going to be a second season or a 3rd. So I hate to wait like months for them to air the next episode, so i'll just wait until they aired everything and watch it in one go.

As for Wednesday, I normally post some of the anime that i'm not able to cover on time. Some would be like Hunter x Hunter which I tend to post it a bit late because I made some other anime my top priority.

I'm covering a lot of anime this season,as there are so many anime that I find interesting to watch. I'm not sure if the Winter season will keep me busy as this season but I would probably pick up the same number of anime this season, as I have a short semester next trimester. If, i'm not that lazy :p

Agreed that pre-information is good, but I never decide without watching one-two episodes. Too many times series with a very low rating ended up being really enjoyable...

Well, those cases are rare and sometimes the benefit of watching it now outweight the benefit of waiting. (Like with Fate/Zero)

Well, I do not have any low priority anime to follow honestly. I do watch pretty much all the series of this season, but between watching and covering there is a big broken bridge...

Winter season looks really promising, but there are no mindblowing titles out there. We'll see in some weeks as the info will start pouring out...

Yeah for course. Finally we have to watch a few of the anime ourself to know if it is good enough or not. I have to agree on some of the low rating being good. But for me mostly won't turn out that way. Maybe because of my taste in anime.

Of course, anime like Fate/Zero... Who can wait?

That is good. I myself can watch everything but I suppose I have to balance myself in anime and learning.

True. Oh i'm also wondering when youa re going to post Mirai Nikki. It's been quite sometime now :p

It seems like most people here are episodic posters like you, so I'll throw out some pure reviewer opinion! I don't do episodics so I don't really worry about a "schedule" but that also brings about the problem of having large gaps between seasons and REALLY heavy updates at the beginning of a new one. That's probably the biggest hell of all of the times. However, between seasons I tend to work on things like a new site design (as you saw) or review anime I've already seen.

As a reviewer I easily watch 12+ shows a season (17 this season). Yes that means I spend roughly 7-8 hours a week just watching anime. If you look at my reviews many of them are "Avoid watches" because I just disliked the series. But I do it mostly for the readers. AA's motto is basically "Watching bad series so you don't have to". However, it is these bad series that tend to have the longest posts in the end. Why? Because ranting and raving about a series tends to blow off quite a bit of steam and makes it not so bad in the end. To balance my dislike in many anime I also pick up anime OUTSIDE of the season such as my reviews for Boogiepop and Aishiteruze Baby. Plus it helps fill the gaps.

That isn't to say I don't drop series either. I dropped quite a few series this season and last because the first two episode literally pained me inside to watch and I do have consciousness of my own well being. Time restraints don't allow me to watch every single show in every single season.

Yep, the reviewer world is quite dire. I've done plenty of review in the past, but the number of series dwindle with the time so its not easy to keep the pace I wanted this blog to have.

I commend your courage, but I am not able to bear hours of bad story for the pure reason of covering it. I agree that ranting create big reviews though...

Oh, well yes this is more reasonable. I rarely drop a series, but hey it happens!

I honestly haven't experienced this problem. There's always more for me to write than I actually have time for. As an example, right now I have over 25 posts in my drafts. A few of them have some content written, but most are just titles and a description of what I want to write. Some of them are over 2 years old. The problem is that I can't find time to sit down and finish all of them.

Ahahahah, Nice worry you have there!

Well, its true that it depends on the time available to write, in my case the time isn't an issue, but the content to write yes.

I was suppose to finish my Kami Memo post which I didn't last season after my hiatus. In the end I find it pointless as it was too late and since the ending was not that great at all so i didn't even bother to mention it after my comeback. It's bad, I know lol.

For now there isn't any show I hate to the point of dropping it but if there is, I would have chose to blog other series that I like better - which I think is better than ranting about it week after week or even dropping it.

brb, going to make a website complaining about the lack of the final Kami Memo posts on your blog...

Agreed, that's definitely the way to go for me as well. There are people who like ranting though as I see plenty of blogs who blog about shows for the only reason of ranting...
