The art of blogging - Between secrets and guidelines

by feal8726. October 2011 19:12

Hello everyone,

Today, I was surfing the anime blogosphere and I noticed many post on "how to write a successfull blog" and similiar arguments floating around in the net, most of them contained many truths and many lies about this little world that is the blogosphere.

We all write a blog in order to get read, to offer a service (like I do with wallpapers) or to share your own opinion with the community, right? Yes, there is no blogger who would not want his post being read and I don't think anybody would open a free-to-read public blog without wanting it to share something with someone else.

While the target may be different depending on the type of blog (I read some blog dedicated to a group of friend or micro-community), this is a truth that nobody can escape from. We want exposure!

 A Channel

Now, in order to understand what makes a blog successfull, we need to understand what is that makes the other, already existing, blogs more or less popular. Is it only quality content written with a great english? I think not!

With some little search using Alexa and Compete (two website popularity services) I gave a quick look at the most popular anime blog at the moment present on the net and I noticed a pattern that can explain to us the reasons behind their popularity.

1) They're all old blogs (3+ years old)

2) They post regularly almost every day

3) They have a big quantity of old content

 A Channel

Can the age of a website influence its own readership regardless of the quality of the content proposed? Yes, take Random Curiosity for example, there is no Omni anymore there and the posts from the other writers, other than Divine, aren't very different from what you can see on many other episodic blogs.

Users tend to prefer what they're used to and rarely decide to stray from the predetermined path unless you give them something more compared to what they're used to. Is it easy? No, but its one of the ways to gain popularity in this world.

Big quantities of old content can also help with the popularity of a blog because its easier for a random google searcher to end up on your blog if you have 5000 quality post with great content compared to 100 of them.

A Channel

Let's talk now about post frequency, the other important metric I noticed a pattern for. The readership want fresh content and want it on a regular basis, posting everyday is not a necessity (it can help though), but you should have a regular schedule on when you publish a post on your blog.

Users want to know "oh, its Thursday, let's see what's new on that bloggers website!", want to see some level of dedication from the blogger, some level of professionality.

Also, its no point to post 5-10 posts in a day all at once. The common random reader will get tired after a post or two, so you should divide these posts into multiple days if possible to keep the interest up.

A Channel

Another important point in the popularity of the blog is the presentation of the content inside the blog, that is the layout/theme you're using to show your content and the very tool you're using (Blogger, Wordpress, Blogengine.net, etc...)!

Make the content easy to read because, for example, users will get turned off if they have to wait seconds for some high quality background to load before being able to read your post.

Make the content easy to browse. Use this as a rule of thumb, "if a post takes more than 3 clicks from the homepage to be reached, mark it as dead" because no one, not even search engines will give enough exposure to it.

A Channel

The last and probably most important thing is "community". The anime blogosphere is a community, in which you share your own opinions and get known around the web, if you close yourself on your blog and think people will start falling from the sky to read your blog you're mistaken.

Go in other people blogs, read their content and share your opinion on the argument if they allow comments, talk with them through email, expand your knowledge and the quality of your posts using the expertise you can learn from someone who is blogging from more time than you.

Create your own circle of blogger friends, ask to exchange links with blogs you like (but wait at least to be some months old or people will be scared you'll die soon after exchanging links), live the community!

A Channel

In the end, the last advice I can give you is to have fun! Don't try to force yourself in a particular style because "that's popular", but create your own style while having fun with your blog!

And you? What do you think is making a blog more or less successfull? What do you suggest to improve ourselves in this competitive world?

See you soon,

feal87

And if you want me to read...just post a bunch of A Channel pics :3 ARIGATOU GOZAIMASU!!!!!!!!!
And, yeah, I agree almost 100% with what you've found, the main reason I believe my view rate is increasing like it has is because I search around (in what little free time I can find) other anime blogs and try to get discussions going.  I never expect a random new view (except for spam-bots) so I have to make myself known if I want to get read.
And if my heart is not in it, I can't do it. So I try to give every post my very best. Sure, there are times when I know I could've done better or when I feel like I can't really do an episode justice, but them's the breaks, I'm always learning and hopefully growing.

I thought "this is going to make someone happy...", it was true then. Tooru is so cute, can I take her home?

Yep, that's the thing most bloggers don't understand or don't want understand. The community aspect is very important to let people know you and for yourself to improve! Just like you are doing.

We all have high and low in our blogging adventure, but we just try to do our best and that's important, or not?

First, TOORU IS MINE!!! NO ARGUMENTS, NO DISCUSSIONS....MINE!
Second, yeah, if you don't like what you're doing...why are you doing it? And what makes you think being an island will get you noticed? Make friends, discuss topics, being a blogger is more than just a daily post, it's being an active part of the community.
Just do your best and try to grow, it's all about having fun with something you like to do. If you like it, you'll get better with practice, guaranteed (although, some workshops or classes couldn't hurt, writing courses definitely helped me :3 )

You have your own style (heavy on wallpapers, though I'm not complaining :3 ) and I have mine, more overview-review style i guess.  Both work for us, respectively, and people appreciate them for different reasons.
But the important part is we're enjoying ourselves and people can actually get something from our postings, ramblings, and pictures :3

Yep, that's the main point. You have to create your own space with your own style, that will make you stand out from the competition.
And yes, if you do not enjoy writing, just stop. Blogging must be fun, otherwise it will just end up becoming yet another job...

Those are some good tips! I'm going to pick up the 3 click tip myself
.

I do think post frequency is the biggest factor in determining a blog's success. You can have great, brilliant posts but if it isn't done on a regular basis people are just going to forget about the blog. That said, it is also the most difficult thing to do in blogging (as I myself am the counter-example! hahaha). That's why I fully respect the bloggers of blogs such as randomc, Hau omochikaeri and ofcourse emptyblue +many more to have such a diligent schedule, and congratulate them on their success.

Other than that, make a contract with feal and everything would be fine.

The normal random user will lose the will to search a lot before me...

When I visit a blog, the first I notice is the design. If it's a mess, it would be a pain to read, so why care? Personally, I like features, like being able to search, find categories and such.

After that, it's about the posts. How frequently updated is the site? Posts every day is a pain and they don't encourage discussions and comments out of the ordinary "yeah, agreed". It mostly works with episodics, especially at RandomC, as they have a very nice design, the main page isn't cluttered because of the older posts as some blogs are.
I don't mind waiting a week for a post if it is interesting. Don't alienate the reader too much either, I guess. Try to make it fun to read for everyone... somehow.

Then we have the writing. What do you write about? How do you write? At least don't make annoying grammar mistakes (I only mind if there are too many). Try to be personal, as objective is pretty boring read and impossible to be anyway. Why not make some kind of "fun" thing, like wallpapers, podcasts or some kind of series, like moments in anime. Variety.

Be social. Other blogs, Twitter and the likes.

And so on and so on. Or just do your thing. Just have fun. Write what you want. As long as you have some kind of structure, it will probably work.

Mhn...that's definitely an important part of the website. I noticed many websites, for example, using a difficult to read background to text color scheme...

Episodic blogs apart (like its partially this blog), the editorials one should stick to a weekly post schedule, but waiting more will make the interest wane in the user and die out slowly, but surely in readership. (See how AOIA lost most of the popularity it had in the past due to a long hiatus...)

Oh, you remembered me about another thing I would like to suggest. Avoid using wall-of-texts, those are difficult to read and discourage the users to read the content. I go always for a 2/3 lines paragraph combination.

That's the must in this era...

I'm still waiting for your blog you know?!

My post looked better when in the writing-section <_>' But yes, that is one of the first things you learn on the net. Use blank lines instead of... whatever it's called. When you make what I will do now:
Three blankspaces and then text. :p

Oh, my blog. I have a test tomorrow, so I have been focusing on that and some other stuff. I have to write down everything I do about the blog too, since it is a part of a school project... a bit of a bother...

But I toyed around with Wordpress during the weekend, so I might put it up tomorrow. Just have to write something first. Guess a short introduction will do for starters.

Posting everyday is sort of pointless to me, unless you have post you made beforehand, but even then not a good idea in my opinion. Although, for episodic bloggers, I guess that is alright, lol. Guess I can stand to be a bit more social, but with school: Friday and Saturday are my only free days. I usual spend an 1-hr or so in between on the weekdays to look at others content/comment. Then again, as said before, I only consider my blog just hobby, so it is alright for me to slip on the upkeep.

That's what I do, I prepare post beforehand in the times I have exceptionally free time (week ends) to post in the moments where I have only few time (week days) otherwise it would have been difficult to keep a 1 post per day policy.

I know, school is a pain, but trust me. Work is pretty much the same...

I've always been somewhat concerned about the design of my blog. Not the layout, since I think having a list of shows helps with the three post rule, but I sorta thought my design looked a little...cheap. It could just be the lack of an anime banner, but it is something I think about quite a bit.

I do think I have a good amount of posts (approx. one every 3 days), but I doubt I could do as many posts as people like you.

As someone who dramatically changed his theme once I can say this: it does help. I actually changed my design and roughly a week or so later I had 300+ constant visitors on my website. Taking the time to create a good theme isn't a bad idea and might be worth it to you in the end. I'm actually work on yet another one to improve it even more.

As for an anime banner, even though many anime blogs have anime banners I don't consider it a point to make. I for one don't go to a website for their banner, it's there, it's nice, but nothing that keeps me coming back. As long as readers know what your website is about (assuming anime) you don't need to blast it in their face with a banner. Just my two cents though

Welcome TheJester!

Agreed that a good layout/theme is important for the visitors to keep up coming back to a website/blog. I changed slightly my theme multiple times in these 9 months and still do, its an evolving work I suppose.

The anime banner is a authority mark imho. A way to distinguish you from the rest of the blog and generate a sense of "Oh, that's that guy's blog!" and will generally create more trust.
But still, not completely necessary if you have the other points.

Having blogged for two years and almost heading the third year mark, my blogging style has evolved during the years. If you check back the earlier posts, they are really messy. As I paid more attention to detail rather than getting the post out of the door, the post quality considerably improved. The problem most bloggers face is perhaps not reading the post more than one time. Reading the post two time is the bare minimum so people can catch all the grammar mistakes for sure. Reading it out loud or using text to speech are helpful tools to help aid that process. Also, people should keep in mind that active voice is preferred over passive voice sentences.

Haituses in my opinion instantly kills the blog as it gives the impression that you might not come back. Although I never suffered a long period of inactivity since I'm connected with the web frequently through my iPhone... I never use hiatus and still participate along with replying to comments. Activity is important, but going overboard by posting nonsense isn't a way to do it. You have to motivate yourself instead of forcing it. This drive still pushes me to blog up to this day.

Lastly, design. Mobile device growth has grown considerably in the past year and it's important to make the site mobile accessible. Sure, smartphones can load the full desktop page, but a mobile optimized one is better and it's easy to implement. Wordpress has a plugin called WPTouch (I use a Pro version of it), which makes this painless. Also, the theme chosen plays a big role. I make my theme from scratch (hours modifying CSS) and uses web fonts.Nobody wants to see the same Arial, Verdana, whatever font Microsoft provides as it's generic. The problem most people face is that Wordpress.com severely restricts any customizing without coughing up 30 dollars per year, which kind of sucks. That should be standard so blogs won't look the same. As they say, content is king so...

Yep that's something I noticed as well in terms of evolution even if on a smaller scale (my little 9 months of blogging), my post increased in size/focus with the course of time automatically.

I also started, like you said, to read back 2/3 times the post after writing it, but still typos escape my sight...*_*

Definitely Haituses kill the blog and will take a lot of time to recover the lost readership! Better keep up some post in your backlog and post them at regular interval when you know you'll be missing for a week or two! (it may happen to everyone)

Oh, mobile is my hard problem! My blogengine.net support mobile themes very easily (you select two themes, one for normal pc, one for mobile), but I never really had the time to put myself to deliver a proper theme for that as well...

Blogger is a bit less restricting on these terms without having to pay anything, but I don't like it. Don't know really why...

Well a lot of the time it isn't individual writers that write every single day. There are multiple writers per blog that often take certain days due to their 'contribution times'. What I mean by that is one will take Guilty Crown for example while another takes C3. Since they air on different days the writers will post on different days. Thus contributing content daily to the viewers.

So in all honesty the more writers you have (in theory) often the less you need to post.

Yeah, that's one case when you talk of team blogs. In my case its just preparing blog posts beforehand and posting them later for the shows less important saving me time on the week days.

That's unfortunately a big fallback as sometimes, the more people in, the less work get out because all of them think "oh, but there are other 4 guys in the team"!!!

Thank you!

Oh yeah, having a stale/frequent frequency is an important and nice thing!

I'm counted as "only readers"... yap i don't do Blogging but i love Animes so i searched for Sites that offers things about them... Episode streaming... News... and Community to talk with other Anime fans and goodies too...

... and as your post stated... i do tend to stay to what I'm used to... like your site that i would like to follow if ever you moved or etc... (which i hope not)... and your regular updates keeps me wanting to visit excitedly as much for new post to read... pictures to get etc...

... to make this short ... I'm having fun in your site..

I was in your side only 9 months ago so well, I understand your position very well...it's another world altogether.

I'll try to keep this whole blog up in the future as well! It's nice to know that there are people enjoying my work!

That's wonderful to hear!

I've been struggling since the beginning with my blog.  Due to my periods of infrequency I lost a lot of my regular commenters, and then on top of that many of my old readers quit blogging, changed interests, etc.  The other problem is my host keeps making my site load very slow, and that's a huge problem because no one wants to sit and wait for a blog to load.  On the other hand I've stumbled across several new blogs with great content, that I've been trying to stop by more frequently (like this one).  I've always been slow on the networking side of things and I guess I have a lot to work on, but I'm happy with the increased frequency of posting I've been doing lately regardless of a lower comment count XD  It makes me feel good to know I can keep the pace.  Anyways, I haven't got a clue why but it seems I didn't put you on my blogroll up until now, so I've done so!

Oh, the host/network problems are definitely something to address. I agree that a slow website takes away users. I'll make an example to confirm this situation.

My blog till 3 months ago had like 3500-4000 views per day, right after improving page load speed from 4/5 seconds per page to 2 seconds per page, the views are now around 6000 per day.
A fast blog increase the will of the user to click around I think...

Networking is definitely an important part of the blogging world, I try to follow, read and comment (if the argument warrant some comment) all the blogs in my blogroll and even some other more.
Agreed, I follow you from a month, but still haven't put you up. I'll do it in 15-20 minutes.

Guess I should get on the phone with my host again.  Even I would stop going to my blog as slow as it's been some days. Oh another thing I didn't mention is that I've had people that otherwise would have commented getting blocked by Spam blocker plug-ins like WP-Spam Free, which I'm sure was a problem with my settings that I didn't notice.

Try to use only image of the size you are displaying, actvate compression (if the host permit it) and put some expiration header on the images (if the host permit it). These are the things I can see as bad on your blog from my eye of software developer. (host aside)

I use Akismet+Manual Moderation to protect my blog, but generally I end up watching the spam comments as well to pick up some random poor guy that ended up going there by error.
Unfortunately there is no safe anti-spam solution out there.

Thanks for the advice I'll have to check with my host about those things and see what can be done ^^  The problem with WP-Spam Free is that I can't see what was blocked unless I turn on monitoring which only last for 7 days before having to re-activate it.  I agree though, there's no safe way to block spam XD

Let us know, I'm curious what shared hosting offer recently. (I'm on a dedicated server at the moment as I use it for some little work as well...)
Oh that's bad, try to search for a WordPress Akismet plugin, there should be one for it...

I'm a bit late to the party on this post. Since I am fairly new to blogging its good to see someone thinking exactly the same way I do about blogging. I know I'm a newbie but I'm pretty sure I understand what makes a good blog good and a bad blog boring. At the moment I'm just trying to find as many other people blogging and comment on anything that piques my interest.
Another one of the things I try to do is reply to comments on my own blog as whoever posted the comment took the time to read my post after all. Its common courtesy to reply when someone is talking to you right.

Also some nice wallpapers. These are the first decent A-Channel pics I've seen in such a big resolution.

Don't worry, we don't call a simple 24 hour delay being "late to the party". Keep up the good job! You're young, but have a bright future!

Yeah agreed, I don't understand why I see a lot of bloggers ignoring altogether the impressions from their readers...

Ahahah, I keep many walls for editorial posts so well, I try to choose the best I have for a certain series...

I think you covered all the major points here. Indeed, I've noticed that over time more readers just come to my blog of their own accord even if I don't post anything, which proves age is a factor. Regarding posting frequency, I've seen mixed results. My theory is that sometimes Google thinks I'm spamming content when I post a lot and stops sending new people to my blog. Other times, posting a lot seems to work.

Definitely age is a factor as you have a very big archive of posts for them to choose from.

In my case Google like for me to post with a high frequency, but I generally don't go over 1 post per day to keep pace.
