Shakugan no Shana III - I need more Hecate! She is the heroine!

by feal878. October 2011 00:35

Hello everyone,

Today we'll talk about the first episode aired of the third and final season of the famous anime series Shakugan no Shana that we all were waiting for.

Yes, we finally get back to business with Shana trying to find a vanished Yuuji together with the help of Yoshida! (they ally themselves when it comes down to Yuuji's welfare)

From the look of the first episode the series hasn't lost that combination of action and drama, but judging from the fact that Yuuji is missing the school segments will be reduced to nothing and that's a good thing.

Shakugan no Shana

The series start with a bang showing us a Shana and Yuuji (how lame he looks in his "new form") fighting against each other in a desolated battlefield filled with rinne.

Watching Shana cut hundreds of enemies one after another was really a nice sight and somehow a nostalgic view as a lot of time is passed from the time I saw the first season!

Unfortunately the battle last only a few minutes before they return to the present where Shana is trying to cope up with Yuuji's disappearance.

Shakugan no Shana

The real episode made a nice job portraying our characters once again and letting us familiarize again with their faces, personality and their situation after the happenings of the last two seasons.

I honestly still can't bear the two guys around Margery, but well at least one of the two understood how foolish is for a normal human to sneak around the flame haze while they battle.

We also had a quick fanservice scene for Shana and it was damn funny to see that the first thing Shana thought of when remembering Yuuji was him entering the bathroom when she was naked.

As you can see J.C. Staff hasn't forgotten how to animate a Shana series filled with special effects and colorful power. I really can't get enough of Margery bear form!

By the way Shana is training hard to become more powerful, I wonder if she already has some doubts over why Yuuji disappeared from her sight or this is just a preparation to fight the Bal Masque...

Either way she'll be in for a big surprise as soon as she knows that Yuuji have maked a pact with the devil (No, not with Kyuubey I hope...) and is now an enemy.

Shakugan no Shana

I liked a lot this first episode and I'll be blogging this regularly while having great expectation for this series future episodes.

I just hope they decide to give my lovely Hecate somehow a little more screen-time...:P

See you soon,

Meh, it was alright. Slightly disappointed with how far they got in this episode amongst other things, but this is J.C staff production I have to keep telling myself, lol. Well, I hope things substantially pick up in the following eps, since they have a LOT of material to cover. Like Marow, I love the OP ^^ Kotoko is the best!

Well, you know. they have a lot of time to cover the material so they started a bit slow. I just hope they'll complete all the material decently this time around.

Yeahhhh! Kotoko is the best.

They have the time, but the quality for me of how is it covered is more important. There is a million of ways to cover something, but most likely J.C staff always picks one the other 10,000 ineffective methods of doing so - even if it does coincide with the LN. Well, no use of complaning just yet I suppose...

Let's start from the basics. Let's follow the LN, after that we can think of quality. (Because J.C. Staff rarely follow it correctly...

DISCLAIMER: Incoming Flaming Rant here! Not meant to offend, but I had to get it off my chest.

Does anyone know what happens to the Sakai x Shana pairing in Light Novel cannon so far? I'm a really huge fan of that ship, but all of the cock blocking and complete lack of progress in 2 seasons and 50+ episodes has worn my patience completely thin. The first season we get an absolute bullshit conclusion where Shana's confession was herp derp retconed just to drag out the plot with more annoying wishy-washy uselessness.

The second season was FILLED with Shana getting cock blocked. Hell, they even summoned a fucking TORNADO with it's own SUPER POWERED Crimson Denizen at EXACTLY THE RIGHT MOMENT. This shit goes on all the way to the tease at the last ep, where they hint at you that MAYBE, MAYBE, Yuji FINALLY made a choice. (At this point I'd even settle for Yuji x ANYONE) Then in the first ep of season three they give Shana x Yuji fans a big F*CK you in the face.

JC staff has a history of being absolutely fcktards with obvious pairings, see Zero no Tsukaima. It's like they're afraid of advancing the plot after establishing a pairing. Are they so short sighted that they believe that once a couple's feelings become requited, there is no more potential for growth? That's totally bull, just look at Clannad. The main pairing got together in one season and the story was one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. Or is it that JC staff is looking to milk money by keeping 3rd wheel Yoshida a "possible" pairing even though almost everyone knows it's not going anywhere? Well, if it's the fault of the source material then that's more forgivable. JC staff did Toradora's end properly after all.

tl;dr

Is there Shana x Yuji in the light novel? If there isn't, then I won't even bother to watch anymore since that's the only worthwhile reason for me to watch this show. I can't possibly put myself through the pain of another season of HERP DERP "I CONFESS BUT I DON'T".

Do no worry. I appreciate rants as long as educated.

Yeah, I know what happens in the following episodes. (spoiled a bit myself on forums)
At least the look of Shana and Yuuji's relationship changes quite a bit and is not the classic rehash of the first two season. I can assure you!

The first two seasons were adapted on incomplete and uncertain material. They had to give some sense of closure in the chance that they won't be able (caused by low sales) to continue the adaptation in the future. I agree that the whole "no, you won't be with yuuji" stuff in the second season was hard to bear, but well here we are.

J.C. Staff is master in creating problematic endings. See Yumekui Merry and many other animes they produced. But I'm confident that, if they follow the source material, they will do a good job on this production.

P.S. Yes, there is! And their relationship change A LOT. (and yes, all the flags seems to assume they will end up together) I don't know however how far in this adaptation they'll start with that final arc.

Thanks for the fast response! Armed with this knowledge, I can rest easy and enjoy the show. It's a huge relief to find out that we don't get a re-hash of "Shana Days". The boring slice of life along with the backwards progress almost slew me.

When you say that J.C staff is a "master in creating problematic endings", I hope you don't mean that as a compliment!
I do see a trend between the quality of their anime endings and source material completion though.

Take Zero no Tsukaima's 2nd season for example. They built up an awesome and dramatic ending, with suitable in character and satisfying development between Saito and Lousie. At first I was a huge Siesta shipper, but I accepted the true pairing in the end. HOWEVER! At the last minute they THREW ALL OF THAT AWAY! Dramatic Epic last stand ending? Deus Ex Machina'd for a couple of cheap laughs, only I wasn't laughing. A season's worth of in character and satisfying development? COMPLETELY UNDONE in ONE throw away scene, tacked on to the end. I was so enraged that I swore off of the series and never watched an episode of ZnT 3. I don't plan on picking it up again ever. That's how much the end affected me.

Don't get me started on Yumekui Merry too.. well I think you have an understanding about my view on JC staff by now.

On the other hand, Toradora already had finished source material. J.C Staff did a pretty good job there. A proper and satisfying ending to a pretty good series.

No problem! Yeah, that's for sure.

Nope, that's not a compliment. I raged quite a bit when Yumekui Merry end and yes they generally do a good job when the original source is complete.

Ahahah, yeah I remember I was in awe near the end of the second season and then?! What they do?! Battle alone against an army and "boobs-saver" Tiffania that appears out of the blue.

With this said I am still unfortunately awaiting for ZnT 4 (that is already confirmed. Did you know?!), because well...I like pretty much all the characters. I also heard it should adapt the same ending of the light novels (that are close to finish)!

Yeah, in Toradora case they followed straight in the source material with some little original material and it did turn out better! (even if the animation quality was sub-par!
)

This episode was so-so, which kinda saddened me, 'cause I was so hyped up for it start strong. All I heard during the episode was "Yuji is gone" which, I aleady knew after 15 minutes or so.

Anyways, I'm still rooting for it. And, Kotoko :3

Well, they have to start from somewhere. With Yuuji on the enemy side there are good hopes for some good battle.

Kotoko! :3

ohhh...that's bad for my heart opening this, one of my followed and favorite series, with this is so much!..."What the!..." best describes how i feel... that seems pleasant ending of ~II~ is just a prelude for this... i can't enjoy my reunion with Shana, not in her usual self, and everyone too like this... what happened to you Yuji?... when did you become irresponsible?

The ending of two is past in my eyes atm, we just need to focus on the future. I want to see the battle between Shana and Yuji.

My suspect is that Yuji is doing all this stuff thinking it is for everyone's sake, especially knowing how simple-minded was in the previous seasons.

Okay, I read somewhere that this series came after Shana S. In hindsight, I really should have watched that first, because I felt very confused with this episode. It still looked interesting, but I felt like something was missing.

Don't worry, I watched Shana S and still feel confused by the first scene that really was out of the blue.

Hopefully they'll explain everything in due time...

Any show that starts off with a glimpse of the end always turns out to be fucking awesome.

Ahahah, I'm not sure the battle between Shana and Yuuji will be the end. I mean, it would be too normal...maybe its trolling by J.C. Staff?
