Here we are to cover a new series of this summer season 2011 suggested by Alex weeks ago and that today I finally had the will and time to watch the first five episodes of.
The series is named Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angel and is probably the most ignored series of this summer season 2011 in the blogosphere. I only read one or two blog actually writing about this, but I can relate with the people dropping this after the first episode. (it gets better after, so I was lucky to resist...
)
Let's start with a quick synopsis :
Haruka Minazuki and Aoi Kannazuki are freshman high school students and best friends. During the day they help with school activities, but at night they thwart enemies like Black Auction and other villains as Red Angel and Blue Angel, the Twin Angel team.
Don't be scared by the "shoujo" look of the story, because this is pure comedy series (parody actually) with a bit of fanservice here and there. You can identify it as a carbon copy of Tantei Opera Milky Holmes with a different setting, but also missing good part of the charm that made that series great...
The series start off really bad with nonsensical story and unappealing character design (both main characters really aren't that attracting if compared to the four girls of Milky Holmes...), but manages to improve the quality of the jokes and the outlook of the story in the following episodes.
The story follow an episodic approach with some slight connection between the episodes to make the main storyline develop. You can expect the presence of the stereotypical "bad guy" of the week in this series, but it doesn't really feel annoying as much as other series! (I generally hate episodic anime like Jigoku Shoujo)
Probably I started caring more about this after the introduction of the While Angel that managed to put some intelligence in the group (the two main characters aren't really smart!) that is by the way my second favourite character!
Why second? Well, because the first one is obviously the enemy of the first couple of episodes! The magnificent Salome-sama!!! I don't know why, but I love that girl. :D
Watching this series from the sound perspective, the seiyuu working on this project are some of the best of the last years with Mamiko Noto in Aoi Kannazuki's role, Rie Kugimiya in Kurumi Hazuki's role and many other BIG names like Yui Horie, Yukari Tamura, etc...! There is really little I can criticize on this side of Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angel, no other series in this season sported such a famous cast in main characters position...
The biggest problem I can see with Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angel till now is the graphical quality that is lacking in most action scene and sometimes even in still scenes. J.C. Staff as always continues to troll us with animation that degrade with each episode, probably caused by the classic, always present lack of budget for animation in their production!
...but if they lack the budget to keep the animation decent why they spend rivers of money in Seiyuu?! I will never understand J.C. Staff way of thinking...
...but well, in the end the series isn't boring, actually some of the jokes are really funny and it is worth watching. I'll continue watching this and we'll maybe talk again about it after I'll catch up with the air completely.
