Baka To Test To Shoukanjuu - Too much gratuitous violence

by feal8712. August 2011 01:42

Hello everyone,

Let's go to talk about the fifth and sixth episode of Baka Test to Shoukanjuu II, an anime series currently in air in this summer season 2011 that is somehow forgetting his own origin to focus on a pure violence comedy style revolving around the four couples created in the first season storyline that is Shouko/Yuuji, Yoshii/Himeji/Minami, Kudou/Tsuchiya and in the end Everyone-else/Hideyoshi.

Why I'm talking about forgetting his own origin? Because in these six episodes we saw very little of the originality in ideas and execution shown in the first season like for example the whole class battle concept that was quite interesting and could be developed a little more in this new season especially as they have a rather strong and well developed cast of characters to base their stories on. (I don't know if the content shown till now is canon in the LN, but I'm still unimpressed)

Baka To Test To Shoukanjuu

Most of the jokes, instead, in this season revolve around Yoshii and Yuuji being tortured by the triad Himeji, Minami, Shouko while unable to do anything to defend themselves. Just being unilaterally tortured, sometimes without any real reason, sometimes even without a reasonable punch line to get a laugh to. (These two episodes were particularly bad on this, gratuitous one-sided violence is not funny!)

Another "bad" note of this series till now is that even if having a rather nice cast there is no real fanservice (the scans from which they make the wallpapers are an exception) if you don't count, of course, my lovely Hideyoshi as a fanservice target. (if you do, don't worry. I understand your pain!)

Baka To Test To Shoukanjuu

But let's go and examine each of the two episodes. The first fifth episode focus on the discovery by Yoshii of an unknown person in the school that is menacing Yoshii with photos stolen of his maid look of the previous episodes and Yuuji by giving to Shouko an audio message stolen with a marriage proposal causing Shouko to be almost ready to introduce him to his father.

The sixth episode following on the same track with Yuuji and Yoshii rallying up the males to conquer the female bathroom and discover who is the real culprit behind the stolen photos (that as far as we got to know from the investigation by Tsuchiya looks like it is a female). All three battles are obviously losen by the males with great joy for Himeji and Minami that are now able to torture Yoshii even more than normally!

Baka To Test To Shoukanjuu

While the whole outlook of the series is positive and the enjoyment level is still one of the top of this season (most of the jokes just works and the violence can be "forgiven"), I still have somewhat a bad taste that hopefully will go away with the future episodes.

Judging from the eyes of one that like me has read the manga, the whole anime series looks strange. Almost out of place, as most of the events are narrated in a rather different way (just rewritten from scratch in some occasion). Especially Akihisa and Yuuji are shown as completely different in abilities in the manga making them less idiot than what the anime is making us think.

Akihisa was able to take a B class level user with his evasion capabilities right from the start (during the battle against the B class at the beginning) and Yuuji had B-grade level of score after starting to study to face the upcoming class battles (just some chapter after he lose with A class in the elementary school level test). Shouko was also much less abusive in the manga, while remaining extremely obedient to any order given out by Yuuji.

Baka To Test To Shoukanjuu

I'll keep watching this and we'll probably do another post on it in the future. Let's hope they'll be able to improve with the second half of the series that'll start next week!

See you soon,

What bad taste? I just love this show to bits!

I hope Minami gets more scenes, her flat chest isn't going to bring her down.

I love this show too, but they're going over the limit with the violence. Himeji looks more like a murderer than a girl recently.

Minami is my second favourite after Shouko and yes, we need more scenes. *_*

I don't watch it but people are complaining how bad it is. In contrary I thought Idolmaster would be boring and uninteresting but it's actually quite good and latest episode was serious business

Yeah, its the classic situation in which the unexpected newcomer that everyone rated low before even starting is proving itself quite an hit.
BakaTest isn't bad, it is just that the story is lacking any kind of innovation compared to the first season. The jokes are still funny, but that's it...

They're reusing the "Himeji, Shouko, and Minami are sadistic" gag way too much.

This series seriously needs some new jokes, it's really lacking in creativity.

Season 1 >>> Season 2

Yeah, that's the whole meaning of the post. They have a great cast, just try something different instead of repeating the same stuff over and over! >_<

Well expecting some form of jokes or the like maybe asking for a little too much. I am guessing the studio is trying to keep the "wheel" simple and the same as last scene, since their was nothing wrong with it. Although, yes, it could use some refreshing values added into the show. I manage to get a cheap laugh regardless

Yeah, I, too, do get quite some laughs from this series, but given the hype around this I was expecting something better than the first series...

Also Himeji is getting more and more evil...:O

I do agreed it was rather hyped up, so it is understandable to be expecting something different.

Lol. I noticed that. Aki has something to do with that perhaps ^^

Aki is a poor man that doesn't understand he has two wonderful murderers following him at every step. I mean how dense he can be?! XD
Same with Yuuji, why refusing the beauty Shouko that is able to do anything if asked by him?! *shake head*

Let's face facts. Who watches Baka Test expecting a "plot" anyway? Nooone I know.

You want to know why this show is successful? If you can find the answer to the question as to why Mitsudomoe is popular, apply that very same answer to Baka Test. The big difference between the two: BAKA TEST DOESN'T F'''ING SUCK!

True, but what we expect is some originality in the jokes at least. Don't we?

Ahahah, Mitsudomoe first season was really hilarious to be honest! Can't say much more than this, a good 90% of the jokes made me laugh out loud and its quite rare for me.
The first season of Baka test was the same, this second one a bit less honestly...

Mitsudomoe is a South Park ripoff and too juvenile for me so yeah.
I don't get it, both seasons of M are, pardon my French, same old S, so what makes Baka Test's SoS different? I'm just wondering considering you liked the garbage that was Mitsudomoe. Garbage is a fowl word...more like overrated.

This second season of Baka test focus too much on the "sadism" part of the three girls with the same joke repeated over and over. We had the same joke every single episode for all these 6 episodes, I feel that's going a little too far.

For the rest...I loved Hitoha from Mitsudomoe and all the Gachi rangers misunderstandings. The only thing I hated of that series was Mitsuba and all the stories around her...

Don't know why you hated it...:O

So far, this season has been full of... nothing? I mean, there's no progression when it comes to their relationships nor even a new enemy for Class F to beat on. There's even no exciting or strategic summon battles. It's as if at this point, Baka To Test simply provides quality entertainment but well, having them rehash so many quirks can get tiring... Especially the sadistic girls theme... OTL

Yeah, this was exactly my point. They are reusing the same approach to make comedy (via the sadistic trio of girls) too much and this in the long run will become tiring.

Probably the directors don't want to risk with original stuff and focus on the confirmed formula to create laughs. (changing means that there is the risk of losing sales)
Honestly I'd prefer them to develop new content or new enemies or new events to let the F class and the school system to slowly change.

Lol I have to agree with you. This season is not as enjoyable as the previous one. We're at the half of the series by now and still no signs of serious summoning battles. I am excluding the sixth episode of course, since it's more like a joke than a battle.

The violence joke is getting dull too. And I never liked that kind of joke in the first place

Exactly, where are the epic battles between classes? The tricks used by the F class for going forward?! (Like the FFF inquisition suicide bombs!!!)

I liked it at first, but after 4-5 times it gets annoying...
