High School of the Dead - Fanservice and bad taste

by feal8721. May 2011 00:29

Hello everyone,

Here we are for yet another review of a rather recent anime series named "Highschool of the Dead" based on an original manga created by Shoji Sato that somehow for its "qualities" generated quite some hype and talk in the blogosphere.

High School of The Dead

Let's start with a synopsis :

Takashi Komuro is a normal highschool boy, until an infection breaks out that turns people into zombie-like creatures. Along with his friends & the school nurse, they fight their way out and continue their journey to find out what exactly has happened to the world.

Ok, till here you can wonder this will be a Resident Evil clone or anyway something filled with battles and zombies, maybe with some plot added to the top and well that's it. Well that's very far from reality...

High School of The Dead

Yes, because I started watching this series oblivious to the original work thinking I would be faced with tons of zombies, great battles, some dramatic scene and deaths and a limited plot around the high school setting escape with a bittersweet ending, instead...well I was first shocked, dropped the series altogether and then started again just to make fun of it.

The series is completely based over fanservice, and please do not misunderstand me. It's the bad side of fanservice (at least for me) that it was almost at the same level of Seikon No Qwaser. (it's difficult to reach the same level of bad taste)

High School of The Dead

The series go and increase the level of fanservice from episode to episode with gems like the rack physics reproduction in the rifle shooting scene with additional bullet jumping from our dear Saeko.

I was appaled and somehow it was funny, but for the wrong reasons. I don't know what category are they trying to cater for with this series (adolescent boy?!), but for sure it would have been better as a full H series at this point.

Let's be honest, I'm not a puritan old man as I do like my share of fanservice in each series and I do read visual novels after all, but there is a clear distinction between fanservice and fanservice...

High School of The Dead

The characters are flat and uninteresting, they exist only as a fanservice relief for the series. I mean, the whole premise of the first episode around the killing of the lover after he became a zombie was laughable, but the "nureru" scene was the apocalypse of the idiocy. (And I'm not going into detail into each scene or I would be here to write for many years to come)

I have not much to say against the production as the design of the girls is good and the voice over decent enough. The only real problem is the animation that was lacking of consistency and quality.

High School of The Dead

To conclude, this is not a suggested seris, you're far off better watching some H ova over this crap as in the end there is no other reason to watch this other than the fanservice

See you soon,

We're in agreement. Surreal boob physics just weren't worth it for me. All that's left is a mediocre zombie show, and I've seen plenty of those already

. I mean, if I want to see that kind of things I'll just watch and H-Anime and be over with it. Why bothering making it a normal series?!

I can sort of see why they did it, in terms of it being a fun idea and how horror movies often have weird moments of fanservice in them.

And Friday the 13th's fanservice DO kind of work, because you know the show's completely camp (and you just came to see the campers die anyway).

But having excessive and ridiculous fanservice in a "serious" apocalyptic movie just doesn't jibe for me. A few of the fanservice scenes were truly creative in an over-the-top way, but yeah - they belong in something campier like a parody or a hentai.

Yeah, Parody would have been a possible way out, but how they structured the series was screaming something like "we want to appear real!", but failing miserably.

The manga was better. Everything in this anime became exaggerated sh*t such as, as hogart mentioned, the infamous boob physics and the gratuitous amounts of... boobs and panchira... man, the only saving grace for this anime was Kouta. He may be a tub of lard but he's one badass moth**f***** XD

I'm guessing that this post was completely satirical, considering that High School of the Dead was the most bad ass shit EVER. Even the litter girl managed to man up and kill a zombie with a tire. Sure there was some blatant fanservice, but there was so much bad assery that it didn't matter. Well holy shit I just got an idea for a post.

I agree this was a bad a** series, yeah it was about zombies and there was a lot of fan service so maybe it wasnt as serious as it could have been but really most anime always have some wimpy ass leading male character being chased around by a ton of hot chicks and he spends most of the series avoiding there advances and making idiotic faces and screaming. And then theres the lolita factor, why is there always some little pubescent girl in most anime with flashing panties, thats perv stuff right there. At least this guy likes girls and hes not afraid to show it like most real guys would. BAnd these characters have personality not like the one dominant girl lead with some female friend that worships her and follows her around like a puppy dog. Bottom line this was a good series even with lots of fan servicea nnd the character personalities were better then 90% of thew stuff out there. Of course if your some little whiny sissy guy thats scared of women and likes little girls and has some secret fantasy that they will come drool all over you in real life then your delusional and I can understand why you don't like this series and the male lead.

Ahahah, you're quite harsh here, but let's be honest there was no serious plot in this series. End-of-the-story, like glothelegend said, this could in the worst situation be interpreted as a "satirical" work.

It's pointless to try and save it by playing around the personalities that by the way weren't even there! They were shouting every half episode "This is not a film!!!!!" like asking for recognition...

To be honest i totalleh agree with yah
I loved the series but its just the damn boob physics is just....annoying.And really i think the nurse is a bit,uhm usless?X3 Then again the whole series would of been better though if it were to slim down a bit or not have it at all ._. But come on seriously?Using a girls chest as a mount and getting slapped by a nurse's bust is probably the wierdest idea ever...but i somehow laughed at that part D:

I have to say I actually like this show. Don't get me wrong, I still think there is way too much fanservice. (Like every 5 seconds.) Some of it is funny and laughable. How can you say the characters are uninteresting? I like most of them especially Takashi (One of the cutest anime guys I’ve seen in a long time and I love the English voice.) and Shizuka(She makes me laugh.) I know this show was meant for males but I love this show and I wish they would have a little fanservice for females. (Maybe have Takashi shirtless with some abs or something!)

Characters interest is entirely subjective just like pretty much everything.

Takashi was extremely boring as main character from my point of view and quite despicable in terms of personality/actions.
There was also a big problem with the story, because I can't really take seriously a series that continues to show me fanservice every five seconds...

I could do without the as for mentioned Boob physics, but consider the fact that Literature and Film are two different forms of media. Literature has time to look into the main characters past and develop a connection with the reader. In film, you have to do all of that within a certain time limit, in this case 25 minutes. It's difficult. To me, it's not about catering to fanservice, it's about trying to adapt a piece of literature into a film.

The series could have catered to many more people without that excessive fanservice.

A lot other series in the past managed to attract the viewer without having to resort to borderline-hentai like here or Seikon no Qwaser and similar anime.

Sorry to say this dude, but you are an old prude who wouldn't know a good show if it kicked you right in your almost non-existant balls. Don't get me wrong, I do think they went way over the top with the fanservice, the very fact that there are 2 entire episodes where the female characters wear almost no clothes at all is a testament to that, but honestly I think that you are being harsh on the story, as far as Anime go the plot is pretty good and quite linear. There were some great zombie battles in the show but once again this was also tarnished by the excessive fanservice, I liked the characters (except Rei D
I thought that they all added to the show in their own way (once again, except Rei). But overall I would say an anime with great potential that was ultimately ruined but excessive gratuitous fanservice taking up screen time that could have been used for zombie killing or character development or plot. Am I right to assume that you actually expected the show to have 12 episodes of them trying to leave the school, are you serious, how the hell would they manage to stretch leaving school out into almost 4 hours of footage without it being the dullest stinking dog turd of an anime ever released. (BTW don't take the insults to seriously, I don't really mean it
)

And no, I was not expecting them to remain in the school at all, why would I?

Honestly, I wasn't a huge fan of all of the fanservice either, I liked the last two episodes of the show, they had good character development and the 12th episode had an awesome zombie battle in it as well. I also noticed that the fanservice in the 11th and 12th episodes was minimal, and I liked it, I wish that the rest of the show was like those last two episodes honestly.

i agree with 90% of what u said lol. however, i love this anime due to the fact its the only anime with ZOMBIES! i also like the blood and gore, awesome fight scenes and thats it. when i saw the first episode i liked the beginning, up to the point when i saw rei's boobs jiggling then BOOM! panty flash out of nowhere. i was like "aww hell,u got to be kidding me, another anime with fanservice". (it ruins good animes)shoot i mean cmon, there i thought jello was the jiggliest stuff in the world until i saw the boobies in this anime-.- all in all, i think this anime would hav been a success without the fanservice U.U yup yup.

I expect that there will be a sequel and that it may change how many feel about the entire series. It has potential to bulid into something much more than it is seen at this point. On one point tho, the art and the animation is very good, indeed at a level of art at times. I like this modern fresh style, with clean lines and strong colours, very much. I will stay open to possibilities. And as a professional artist, i enjoy the female figure in many artistic forms.

The premise was good, I have to agree on that, but all that fanservice was there just for the heck of it. That's the main problem here!
Fanservice is fine if you're doing a light hearted series and it isn't too preponderant, but in this case everything revolve around the bodies of the girls!

ya the premise was what interested me frankly i sort of ignored the fan service, as an artist i am so used to it that i guess it did not have the negative impact on me that it did for many. It was gratuitous and I figured they decided to make an all out effort to sell the series with it, which is too bad as the horror aspect of the story was rather gripping in its own way. It will be interesting to see if there is more.

i do admit tho, it took several months before i could watch the series, the violence was so shocking and so graphic, but there were things about the series that were impressive. It is not always easy to predict the Japanese audience response which i try to follow, as it changes over time just as the western version does. Overall, one of the most interesting things about this troublesome series was the impact of some of the scenes, very powerful.  The OVA was however just about totally without merit lol.

Yes, I agree that the average Japanese Audience is quite different in terms of tastes compared to the average western one.

The OVA was really, completely useless from the story standpoint, but it was hilarious to crack some jokes about what was the focus of the series...

good point, it sure did make fun of itself...  esp the Zombie surprise that Takashi had the next morning lol.  And yes i have to keep reminding myself the primary audience these are made for, and how they feel quite differently about some kinds of violence, and sensuality,.... but in the end this series remains an enigma, similar to Elfen Lied, which i have on a short list with School Days of bizarre and frightening, yet I know they are seen differntly in Japan. Anime appreciation truly widens horizons and I have often found that my own views have grown quite remarkably more tolerant or wider when i least expected it.

Elfen lied, you remember me about that series. It was far too bloody for me to bear and well, it was painful to watch. Same story for School Days

I prefer anime where blood is not preponderant. I don't like suffering after all...

I liked this anime because it was different. Sure it had it's over the top moments of fan service but I just found that humorous. I like how they incorporated that into this show, it makes it different and a whole other mood. I do believe the characters history and or pasts could have been expanded but the series isnt over yet. Still gotta say though Saeko is one of my all time favorite anime characters. I can also relate to this, cause I'm around the same age, little older. I think this series will get a lot better as season 2 comes out.

I share some of your feelings about the first episode before watching it I saw the flood of images of boobs and zombies, and I'm tired of having zombies in games, television, books novels, social critics about consumism. You're right about the overuse of fanservice, made me question myself on an explanation to the use of such unreal breast physic and some camera angles, there had to be a deeper meaning to it, hadn't it?
However, the story revolves around the chaos a disaster could bring to an unprepared society. The characters and the people in general deal with  the hardships of a anarchy-like event and having second thoughts about justice, empowerement and most importantly what is there for them tomorrow.

I've been reading your reviews and finding a taste for your recommendations on anime, reason why I decided to give an opinion about one that I believe you could enjoy if you try to overlook the closeness to a H-anime.

Hello Daniel,

yeah, this series could have been a lot better if they toned down the fanservice elements and maybe improved a bit the characterizations of the characters.
