Hello everyone,
Let's return to review another light novel/manga/anime series named Mushiuta aired in 2007 long 12 episodes. (quite few for a 19 volume light novel to be honest)
There were some rumours about a second season of the series, but nothing certain as for now.

Let's start with a synopsis :
Mushi-uta's story takes place in the near future. Ten years before the story's opening, strange insect-like creatures known as "Mushi" began appearing. The Mushi are able to consume peoples' dreams and thoughts in return for supernatural powers. Protagonist Daisuke "Kakkou" Kusuriya encounters a young girl named Shiika Anmoto. The two, in time, become quite close. However, unbeknownst to Kakkou, Shiika is an escapee from a secret prison known as GARDEN where those posessed by the Mushi, known as the Mushitsuki are held.
The story is pretty interesting and all the setting of the story looks legit enough especially all the secret police effort to hide the Mushi existance and the nocturnal battles to clear rogue Mushi...

...but even after a couple of episodes you'll still don't understand much of it.
Maybe because this series is very short, or maybe because the adaptation of the story was not the best, you'll find yourself shouting "wtf" for most of the time of the series ending up in great climax of "wtf" at the ending with gazillion of questions and no answer whatsoever.

The best episodes are the one most easy to understand and without questions left unanswered that is the fanservice episodes with Shiika staying at home with Rina doing normal things while hiding her own identity to not get hunted again.
I'll say this clear, be prepared for a sad ending, I was left a little unprepared to the events at the end of the series and got it pretty badly.

The characters are few, but except for three of them you'll never remember the rest as they don't get much screentime or they are plain enough to get forgotten somehow in the midst of the story.
There is no relevant growth in the characters during the short timeframe the anime series cover, but that's probably due the short length of the series.

My favourite character is the honorable Rina Tachibana, with her strength to fight to get free will from the government organization that just want to control them. And if you know how the series fare you'll understand why this has been a rather bad choice for me.
Nice second for the silent Shiika Anmoto, mostly because there isn't any other decent character in the whole story other than these two.

The graphical quality is top notch (loved the light effects they managed to create in this series) and I quite liked the style of the girls. The animation has been mostly consistent and with no major animation problem.
The sound quality is very good even if there aren't many famous seiyuu working for this series except maybe for Kana Hanazawa in Shiika's role and some other minor role.
Also nice the opening of the series named "Mushi-uta" sung by Akatsuki. (I'll probably review it properly in another post in the future)

Concluding, this is a rather good series with great action and high production values, ruined a little by the pace of the story leaving everything unanswered for the whole duration of it.
I suggest it to anyone looking for a big mistery/battle series that can stand unconclusive/sad endings.
See you soon,
