Hello everyone,
Finally the time has come. Today we'll be reviewing the visual novel/anime series sporting my favourite character of all time. We're talking about Shinkyoku Soukai Polyphonica (Crimson series) featuring our lovely Corticarte Apa Lagranges!

Let's start with a synopsis :
In the continent of Polyphonica, Spirits materialized in the world, surviving on the music that is played by humans, and lives together with them. While the spirits doesn’t appear often, some spirits has enough power to materialize in human or animal forms and live together with humans. Dantists, who play special music called “Commandia,” are widely respected in this world. They also usually are in contract with powerful spirits. The story of Shinkyoku Sōkai Polyphonica revolves around the new Dantist, Phoron Tatara, the spirit that he made contract with, Corticarte Apa Lagranges, and their friends, in their daily life and work.
The story premise is quite good and the execution of the visual novel at the same level good with good pace and nice plot size/deepness.

The anime? Well that's a big black point to this series, the first anime adaptation while it had wonderful quality from the production standpoint it lacked quite a lot from the plot standpoint.
The plot was shallow at best and the characters except for our Corticarte are plain and without any kind of interest. (Unless you already read the visual novel that is)

The second adaptation that covered the school segment of the story was better, especially watching all the backstory on how Phoron and Corticarte got to know and pact with each other and all the normal academy life you can expect in a series like this.
Thought to be honest, both series pale in comparison with the quality of the visual novel (It's not 18+, but all ages rated) produced by Ocelot.

The characters are many and all of them is given in the visual novel enough time to develop and focus on. The anime due to time restriction focused mostly on Corticarte and Phoron backstory (it was to be expected due the single cour anime series)
My favourite character? Is that even a question?!

Of course, my favourite character of this (and all anime series till now) is Corticarte Ape Lagranges (the young form, not the adult one), the tsundere girl in love with Phoron, but at the same time the powerful 6-wing (or 8-wing depending on the series) ancient spirit that got sealed years ago and is now free again.
I just can't explain why I like her so much to be honest, be it for her wonderful style and body, be it for her tsundere personality, be it for...I don't know.

The visual quality of the series is very high, especially the visual novel one. I did like the anime graphical design (especially Corticarte in the second season), but preferred the visual novel one.
The animation in the anime is pretty consistent, even thought more than once in the TV broadcast we got some little problem. (probably fixed in the dvd release)

The sound quality of the two series is pretty high with many famous seiyuu working on this project like Haruka Tomatsu in Corticarte's role, Ayako Kawasumi in Tsuge's role, Nana Mizuki in Perserte's role, etc...
My favourite seiyuu in this series is of course Haruka Tomatsu with her wonderful portrayal of Corticarte childish and tsundere personality.

Big note should also given to the OP of the first series named "Apocrypha" from eufonius that I still hear from time to time. (I'm quite a fan of eufonious after the OP of True Tears named "Reflectia")

Concluding, I have two different things to tell...
One is that the anime while not the best out there it's worth giving a try if you like slow-paced, calm story with some battle scene here and there.
Two is that the visual novel is one of the masterpieces of the last years and MUST be played if you know enough japanese to get through it!
That's all for today.
See you soon,

P.S. May return on the future talking about this series as there is still the manga to talk about. :D
