Fate Stay Night - Rin Tōsaka forever

by feal8728. February 2011 21:42

Hello everyone,

Let's go review another series I liked that aired quite far in the past, but it is pretty vivid to each one of us. (It had a massive success in both Japan and overseas)

I'm talking about Fate/Stay Night, an erogè by Type-Moon (the same company as Tsukihime) adapted in an anime and in an animated film (this one rather recently).

Fate Stay Night

Let's start up with a synopsis :

Shirou Emiya lost his parents in a fire when he was young and was later adopted by a sorceror by the name of Kiritsugu Emiya. Although he was full of admiration for his adopted father and yearns to become an ally of justice, Shirou has limited powers and was unable to become a strong sorceror like his father. That is until one fateful day, he was drawn into the Holy Grail War and had to summon a female "Servant" known as Saber in order to protect himself. It turns out that the Holy Grail War involves a series of battles among powerful sorcerors to fight for the possession of a relic that will grant one's wishes, the Holy Grail. There are altogether seven "Masters" who can summon their respective "Servants" from different classes known as Saber, Archer, Rider, Berserker, Lancer, Caster and Assasin. These "Servants" have to hide their names in order not to reveal their weaknesses to the enemies. The story revolves around Shirou and his entanglement in the Holy Grail War.

Yes, this is a quite action story centered around a ritual happening in this fictional Fuyuki City and all the various characters that surround our Shirou Emiya.

The story is one of the most interesting that you can get out there, it gets you off the spot into the middle of the action and continue to tease you with new scenes and battles for the whole duration.

Fate Stay NightFate Stay Night

The story by itself it's not anything out of order (it is predictable at many points), but remains fresh and continue to compel the reader/watcher to continue.

The original erogè got three main routes for the three girls around the main character, but the anime and film adapted respectively the Fate route (the Saber one even if slightly modified to include parts of the other routes as well) and the Unlimited Blade Works route (the Rin one followed pretty closely).

Fate Stay Night Rin Tousaka

From the story standpoint the film has some negative point regarding the presentation of the content. Due the limited film duration they had to pack many scenes into few minutes and ended up to miss some important part of the original story. (if you haven't watched the main series you may not understand everything)

The characters are relatively few, but you'll get to know and remember them right from the start thanks to their pretty definite behaviour and actions. (Most of them follows the standard stereotypes of anime character)

Fate Stay Night Rin TousakaFate Stay Night

Most of them are quite likable if you make exception for that scumbag of Shinji Matou that is by far the most hatable character with no saving attributes at the point that you'll want to punch the monitor multiple times while watching the series.

If I have to say I quite hate also the Shirou character, close minded and childish from the start to the end in all three routes with few redeeming scenes. (But well at least better than Shinji)

Fate Stay NightFate Stay Night Rin Tousaka

My favourite characters is Rin Tousaka, I love her tsundere behaviour linked with wonderful beauty and sharp intelligence. She is the most reasonable character from start to the end of the story in all three routes.

The visual quality of the TV anime is pretty good for the time with some little screw up in animation consistence in some episodes, while the Film is basically state of art quality with basically no graphical problem for the whole duration of it.

Fate Stay Night Rin Tousaka

The seiyuu used in both TV anime and Film are pretty high quality and do a relatively good job. I loved Kana Ueda in Rin's role!!!

The opening and ending songs were quite good, I especially liked "Disillusion" by Tainaka Sachi that was also the opening from the erogè (even if the anime one was remixed)

Fate Stay Night

Concluding this is one of the most interesting and nice anime of the last years, go and take a look at it, but start up from the TV anime because as I said the film skip many important parts and leave an unprepared watcher wth too many questions.

See you soon,

Ahaha, the infamous Fate Stay Night series. I personally love the visual novel for a lot of it's very unique, well thought out ideas, but I've often found the anime counterparts a little lacking. The TV series made a mess of the original story, though I guess it did have some strong points here and there.

As for the UBW movie, it had some amazing animation and great battle scenes, but the story was completely butchered so that it could fit into the limited screentime it had.

Both are flawed adaptations (which I could only blame studio deen for, sigh...) that doesn't reflect the source material too well. Nevertheless, it's a rather interesting series, and with Fate/Zero being adapted into an anime this summer (and NOT Studio Deen) I'm looking forward to seeing how this franchise continues to evolve.

That, and I'm waiting for Nasu to release Mahou Tsukai no Yoru already; it's been delayed way too many times.

True that the story was reduced in size, but was inevitable. The visual novel was long, very long, it would have required a 52 episode anime to adapt fully and correctly.

Yeah, I'm waiting a lot for the Fate/Zero adaptation, that will be a great hit if done correctly. (And the studio this time looks like a big one so we may hope)

Mahou Tsukai no Yoru? Got a little disappointed by the fact it's not voiced...but I'll check it out anyway.

i think fate/stay night is so epic that it cannot be contained in a single movie/24 episode anime with poor direction and quality. if they did Harry Potter's finale in two parts, maybe that would've worked for UBW and I hope they do that for Heaven's Feel.

I think FSN was the second visual novel I ever played and the first one I truly enjoyed... good thing it had english patches

My first visual novel was Tsukihime and then Fate then I passed to the japanese ones as soon as I learned enough language.

I'm pretty interested in see how they will animate Fate/Zero as that was an original novel that had quite a lot material too. Hope for a 26 episode series at least.

Both the anime and the movie were most enjoyable. Glad to know yet another out of the millions who agree that no matter how badass they try to make him in the movie, Shirou Emiya will forever suck, Rin Tohsaka and Saber are maidens of awesomeness and Sakura is having either Rider or Rin's love child.

Another good review dood. Oh yes, Fate/Zero anime coming soon. I am psyched.

Fate/Zero is going to be a trainwreck if Gen continue with his history of depressing series. Not that is a bad thing to be honest.

I believe the main problem with the anime was mixing bits of other routes into Fate, I don't think they needed any more episodes. As for the UBW movie, if I was a first-time watcher I would have understood nothing but one thing: "nice action". I really love the Fate franchise though^^

Agreed with the alchemist mix done by the scenario writers in the original fate series, but nevetheless didn't looked so bad to be honest.

The film needed at least the double of time to flesh out naturally, it's a pity for those who watched it without having played the game.
