Darker than Black (The series without a sequel)

Hello everyone,

Let's go do some new review instead of ramblings this time. We're going to review an original action anime project named "Darker than Black: Kuro no Keiyakusha" that got two seasons and an OVA series (that act like a prequel to the second season).

Darker Than BlackDarker Than Black

Let's start up with a synopsis :

In Tokyo, an impenetrable field known as "Hell's Gate" appeared ten years ago. At the same time, psychics who wield paranormal powers at the cost of their conscience also emerged. Hei is one of the most powerful of these psychic agents, and along with his blind associate, Yin, works for one of the many rival agencies vying to unlock the mysteries of Hell's Gate.

Yeah, the first thing I thought when starting to watch this series was "Wow!". This is an interesting story that have some chance to get truly a masterpiece.

The story as narrated by the first season (the only one I truly recognize) is quite nice and attracting, each of the short stories (it's divided in mini-arcs of a few episodes) narrated a different side of this world situation and all converged in a wonderful way into the final arc and the ending.

A real masterpiece of the last ten years...

...and then we had the sequel (they tried to milk up the cow). I cannot describe simply with words how that season has been an insult to first season.

Everything that was making Darker Than Black a success was missing, our protagonist (Hei) reduced to a powerless drunkard and the new protagonist, a little girl named Suou, terribly annoying and emo-ing over every little things.

I watched the second series with pain and sadness as they ruined the possibility to create another hit and another beautiful story around this world.

The recurring characters in the both season are few, but quite nicely defined. Each one of them has a particular retribution to pay for their own powers and it get interesting to watch how that affect the storyline!

The visual quality is top notch in both seasons, even if I liked a lot more the Japanese metropolis backgrounds more than the Russian one. The animation is mostly consistent in the whole series with maybe some little screw up in the second season.

The sound quality is also top notch, I loved all the OP/ED of the first season. ("Tsukiakari" from "Rie Fu" is the best one to me).

Darker Than Black

The seiyuu also did a nice job. I particularly liked the "Nana Mizuki" role as the police officer following Hei (Misaki Kirihara) and "Hidenobu Kiuchi" role as Hei.

My favourite character is by far Yin with her complex character hidden behind that emotionless face of a Doll, she's wonderful in the ED dedicated to her!

Darker Than Black

What were we saying again...Ah yes...

Concluding I suggest everyone of you to go watch this series, it's a wonderful one that will keep you attached to the monitor for the whole duration of the story. It has only one fault...

IT HAS NO SEQUEL (*)

See you soon,

blahblahblah.

The whole problem was that the OVA was released after the second season instead of before. newcomers would have the sense to know how to chronologically put them

Nah, the OVA was rather high quality and quite consistent with the first season style to be honest.
The second season instead changed almost everything and put up an half assed ending if compared to the first one. (create a copy world where Suou and co live happily thereafter?!)

The main problem imho is not that the second season is by itself BAD (picked up by itself it is a season with high production value), it's just that the difference with the first one (Comparison that obviously anyone do) is too big to be hidden.

I don't care if Hei is labeled a pedo or not; he must be paired with Yin!
Yeah, I'm a fan of the two

Ahahahah, agreed, the pair Hei with Yin is the best of the series. I'd love to see more story over those two.

I agree with your comments on season two for the most part, but I believe that season two in it's own right has it's strengths. Suou had some rather interesting character development, while we saw Hei's growth as a result of Yin's disappearance.

That being said, DTB gaiden (aka season 1.5) was much more in line with what the first season had to offer. It's a shame the director said there probably won't be a season three, mainly because season two ended on such an odd note.

Suou did have some character development and that's all good, but the problem is that we all watched that series to see Hei at its best....and what we got?!

Yeah, with the second season ending it's pretty difficult to do a third season unfortunately.

For some reason, I saw season 2 as a side story of some sort. I felt that the whole series was centered on Suou rather than Hei while Hei was treated more like a main supporting character, even if his role was imperative to the plot itself. I guess that's where the Gaiden series comes in. On the whole, I found season two pretty decent when we look at things from Suou's perspective but yeah, a huge part of me wants a continuation of Hei's story. If I have to mention a dissatisfaction I had for the ending of season 2, it was how everything was left in an ambiguous state so I'd love to see all these issues cleared up one day. Then again, perhaps that was what the creators were aiming for in the first place? To leave everything shrouded in ambiguity?

Maybe they aimed to milk the cow of the fanbase?!

Anyway yes, I think too that it is focused too much on Suou the story, and that is the main reason to the change of style and tension during the series.
We need more Hei awesomeness in a proper second season!
