Aria - How cute is my Alice Carrol?!

by feal8723. February 2011 08:09

Hello everyone,

I write this post while listening to the full soundtrack of this fantastic slice of life manga/anime we're going to talk about now.

It's name is Aria and is written by Kozue Amano and is one of the best series I've ever watched in my life and I know I'm setting the level bar very high with this statement. (got three anime seasons and some OVA)

Aria AnimeAria Anime

Let's start with a synopsis :

On the planet Aqua (formerly Mars), Akari Mizunashi has made her home in the charming town of Neo-Venezia, a reproduction of the ancient Earth city. Determined to become an undine, Akari spends her days training in the labyrinths of canals throughout the city. She enjoys the primitive lifestyle of her ancestors and has no qualms about doing her own laundry or cooking meals from scratch. Pursuing this career and becoming independent are her dreams and, with the help of some curious Martians, underground dwellers and even wild creatures, Akari will one day captain her own gondola through the city of Neo-Venezia.

As you can read from the synopsis, this anime is highly episodic and does not have a linked plot to be followed episode after episode and even as I generally hate episodic anime, I found myself loving this series to no end.

Each story, while pretty simple, gives up that warmt feeling that I can't easily explain with words.

Each character has a nice defined personality that reflect well in their actions, there is a general paradise feeling in the ambientation of Neo Venezia (I'm italian and I can assure it's reproduced in a spectacular way).

In the whole series I've never found a single bad act or evil person, and this is a quite nice point to make a person forget about the real world problems.

The graphical department is quite good and I liked a lot how they reproduced in a very detailed way the old city in this new futuristic environment.

The opening and ending animation are quite good even as the opening is actually mostly footage of the real episode.

The soundtrack is fantastic, I loved each of the many songs they proposed in the series and listened to them to no end.

Some of the best that I can quote are "Rainbow" and "Natsumachi", both from "Round table feat Nino" and "Spirale" from "Yui Makino".

Aria Anime

My favourite character is Alice Carroll. Other than her cute personality and nice appearance, she is voiced by the seiyuu I most love (Ryou Hirohashi) with her wonderful voice!

Aria Anime

There isn't much else I can add to this review other than a "go watch it!" if you still haven't.

This is a series I can suggest to basically anyone, it is one of the masterpieces that are very rare in the current anime world dominated by low quality fanservice anime.

See you soon,

I definitely agree 101% with what you said about ARIA. This has got to be, hands down, one of my favorite slice-of-life series of all time! I bought every volume of the manga and I never get bored of reading the same thing over and over again. The same goes with watching the Anime. Amano Kozue is a genius in drawing scenery porn. I love every detail she drew in her works and I'm glad I read ARIA before visiting Venice itself because seeing the town with my own eyes after how ARIA portrayed it made me fall in love with the place even more! It's a shame the series has come to an end but we could always re-read and re-watch it. This love for ARIA will never fade.

True that there are a lot of people that still refuse to watch it. It's sad.

Athena is mai waifu, so naturally her protege would be awesome too. It's a shame they were only in about 1/3 of the episodes.

True enough, Athena actually was in even less episodes. Unfortunately they neglected a lot the "Orange Company" part in the anime. (and I think also in the manga)

I know I'm months late in posting this, just watched a fansub of all three seasons, plus OVA, in addition to reading 90% of AQUA/ARIA manga volumes scanlated and mixed up on various sites.

This was the first non-Studio Ghibli work that hit me with such strong female characters that ended up being epic, and actually brought me to tears at several points. (Both manga and anime. I should note, I'm a guy, and don't cry to cartoons until this series. {Embarrassing remarks not allowed.})

Since my introduction to these, I've managed to acquire all the soundtracks (Including the PS2 Game soundtracks.) and have been listening to them on my iPod while I write up a fan-fic based on Neo-Venezia.

I have to agree, Orange Planet was underplayed in both the Manga, and Anime... (The gloves and the hat are what made Orange my fav.) Then again, a lot more could have been done with the Sylphs, Salamanders, and Gnomes who appeared less than Athena did.

Still looking for the translated Authorized doushinji about the boy from Aqua that travels to ManHome to look for work. (Obscure work that I've only found 2 web references for, but no info on author.)

I'm really interested in picking up the actual manga, but the U.S. release is held by TokyoPop who closed their California office, and dropped the project (After 5 volumes of ARIA.), though Rightstuf has the video at least so I can grab legitimate copies of those at some point.

To answer your question: How cute is your Alice Carroll...
Definately adorable, but I'm actually partial to Ai, or the young Akino "Grandma", or the three off the Traghetto.

I do see Alice as a great teacher, much like Alicia, and Akari though, especially after having to take care of a klutz like Athena. XD

Don't worry, its always nice to see other people's opinion. No matter how much time has passed!

I'll be honest and say that I don't have your same fervor in searching for soundtrack and such (apart from all the OP/ED), but I can imagine the quality if they kept the same level as manga/anime.

Orange Planet was a little casted aside compared to the other two companies and to be honest I want more Alice NOW!

The three of the Traghetto were quite interesting to be honest, haven't talked much about them, but I liked a lot their little story from the other side of the work. (compared to the more touristic job of the three companies)

Oh, now I need to rewatch a couple of episodes...

The Soundtracks can be found with a check for [Nipponsei] *cough* Baka-BT *cough*

As for the apology, I'm often finding posts about stuff years dead in forums, instead of on recent blogs. (Like 3 years ago on AnimeSuki forums.) to which I get flamed for dredging up 'dead' subjects. (Thus why  tend to lurk and keep my opinions to myself.)

Anyway, Glad to give you a reason to revisit that wonderful world. I go back often myself when checking references for my fan-fic.
